From the end of the eighteenth century, two distinct global processes began to transform livelihoods and living conditions in the South Asia region. These were the rise of British colonial rule and globalization, that is, the integration of the region in the emerging world markets for goods, capital, and labour services. Two hundred years later, India was the home to many of the world's poorest people as well as one of the fastest growing market economies in the world. Does a study of the past help to explain the paradox of growth amidst poverty? The Economic History of India: 1857-2010 claims that the roots of this paradox go back to India's colonial past, when internal factors like geography and external forces like globalization and imperial rule created prosperity in some areas and poverty in others. Looking at the recent scholarship in this area, this revised edition covers new subjects like environment and princely states. The author sets out the key questions that a study of long-run economic change in India should begin with and shows how historians have answered these questions and where the gaps remain.

The contents of this book are good which will help students and young scholars to understand the economic development of India under the British rule and after independence. One of the significant side of this book is that the book also covers the regions of India that were under the indirect control of the British Raj, i.e. the princely states. It also focus on several other issues related with the economy of a country or region, such as environment, health issues and others. But, the print quality and paper quality of the copy, which I have received, are not good enough. It is very disappointing to see that the page and print quality of a renowned publishing house like Oxford is not up to the mark.

Bearing in mind that most people recommend this book for UPSC CSE Economics Optional (Paper-II), I think the book is highly overrated. It lacks perspective, i.e. it only talks about what was good about the British economic policy in India and not about its ills and evils.
The author might have written the book bearing in mind his job of teaching at the London School of Economics, which is why he ought to write from a single perspective only, which was theirs.
I have read other books on Economic History of India too but none of them has showered so many praises for the British as this one. Only buy if you want a British perspective of British atrocities.
