The room was very clean. Staff spoke good english and was very helpful! At breakfest you could choose from 5 menues and tee or coffee. One of which was a simple sandwich with meat an cheese. The hotel is 5 min away from MTR station. Excellent value for money!

It's historical residential estate, now reactivated for hostile. I had staycation here for 3 nights.

The rooms, as expected, are basic. I am satisfied as it's clean, well illuminated, and ventilated. During my stay, the weather was extremely hot and sunny but the air conditioner worked perfectly. My room had no views but a slope.

There's a cafe in the restaurant for simple breakfast and lunch. I didn't try. Some cheap eateries after 5-10 mins walk.

Need walking over 10 mins to the nearest MTR station, either Shamshuipo or Mei Foo. I explored the neighborhood which is very old with blocks of public housing and poor people. It's fun for me. I stayed as a local.

There's a small hill called "Garden Hill" next to this place. There's a staircase besides it which leads you up to the hill top where one can overview the city. Good for day and night scenes. Not that difficult to climb.

Overall an interesting experience for 2 or 3 nights.

I'd always choose Mei Ho House whenever I return to Hong Kong at least once a year. The double rooms are spacious and clean. Service staff are pleasant. Plenty of options for breakfast. Our room was also decorated with vintage icons. But the best part of it is that it's really affordable. It's not located in the heart of Tsim Sha Tsui or Central, but very well connected by bus and train. Plenty of eateries and bustle in Sham Shui Po, and lots of discounted tech around. Takes half an hour to get to both. A20 goes directly from the airport to Sham Shui Po, although my partner and I haven't been able to locate the return bus back to the airport. Anyone has any clues?

My review is divided into four parts: location, room, service and hostel, and the amazing museum.

1. Location

The hostel is approximately an 8 minute walk from the B2 (Post Office) exit of the Sham Shui Po MTR station. The route from the B2 exit to the hostel was really straightforward, and this is coming from a less directionally inclined person. The station is conveniently located on the Tsuen Wan line, which covers all major tourist places in Kowloon (Mongkok, Tsim Sha Tsui) and extends to Central in Hong Kong Island.

While Sham Shui Po does have a reputation for being a more "complicated" area as it is largely working class, my friend and I found it a rather safe area even though we often returned to the hostel around 11-12 at night. You will still find the locals roaming about at this time! What's more, the streets are lined with old shops selling traditional Hong Kong delicacies (think wan-tan min, che zai min, egg tarts, dim sum and more!). It really does give you a glimpse into what "old" Hong Kong feels like, and their cheap prices certainly makes it all even better.

2. Room

We stayed in an extremely spacious twin room. The furniture were all new, the mattress may be hard for some but we loved it, the toilet was spacious, and there were tons of storage space (wardrobe, cupboards etc.). There was even a TV and two armchairs. They also provided a very powerful hair dryer, towels, and a big tub of liquid that can be used as a shampoo, conditioner, and body wash. Wi-Fi was free too. However, we did find it a bit difficult to control for the right shower temperature (it was either too hot or too cold). All in all, it was a far better room than those of most 2-3 star hotels I've experienced in Kowloon.

Did I mention that breakfast is also included in the room price? You can choose from three types of breakfasts: Chinese style, Hong Kong style, or Western style. They were all filling and yummy.

3. Service and Hostel

Staff were helpful and friendly. The hostel is generally really new and clean, and quite "hipster" (e.g. guest drawing on walls, murals etc.). My second favourite place in the hostel is the cafe that serves breakfast, which is tastefully decorated with beautiful vintage items and drawings.

4. The amazing museum

My most favourite place in the hostel would be the museum that documents the life of residents of Mei Ho House from the 1950-1970. It was really eye-opening to read the hardships and memories of residents that stayed at this area during that period. They also have wide collections of items from that era on display: everything from report cards and children chess to movie posters and newspaper cut-outs. There are also lots of beautiful black-and-white pictures on walls and display, some even laid out in a 3D manner that makes for a great visual experience and photo opportunity.

TL;DR:

If you are 1) on a budget, 2) would like to experience more of the gritty/realistic side of Hong Kong, and 3) stay in a comfortable place, I would definitely recommend Mei Ho House.

The first impression when I arrive in this hotel, is the hotel is quite simple and neat.

When you check in you have to deposit 500 HKD to the receptionist. And then they will give you the deposit receipt (don't lose it, or you'll not getting your deposit back), room card and tv remote which you should return them to the receptionist altogether with some other stuff (you can see the list inside the room) when you check out.

The room is clean, and the room space is wide enough for hostel. I suggest you to request for the higher floor since the hotel is near the main road, so it would a little nit noisy at night.

My favourite thing in this hotel is their breakfast. There are 3 selectable menu as default breakfast menu. There are Chinese breakfast, hongkong breakfast and my favourite western breakfast. All of the was good but I like western more.

First, order the breakfast you want to staff in the kitchen, and they will give you buzzer that will buzzing when your meals are ready. After you finish your breakfast, don't forget to return the dishes to the rack near the kitchen.

The little minus is, you have to return some stuff to the receptionist when you check out (if i'm not mistaken, you have to return, pillow cover, blanket cover, tv remote, and room card. There's 1 more thing but I forgot what it is).

Tips:
- if you stay in this hostel, you better not bring huge travel bag, because the hostel location is a little bit uphill. And you will do some hiking in order to reach the hostel.but it's worthed ;-)

*I forgot to take some picture of the hotel room and facility. I hope my description can help you

After a rocky start to our HK trip, where we were unable to stay at our pre-booked airbnb accommodation, the staff at YHA Mei Ho House Youth Hostel were very accommodating and we were able to stay here for the entire 2 weeks of our holiday.

The hostel building itself is one of the oldest housing estates in Hong Kong and has recently been renovated into a brand new Youth Hostel. What used to be one apartment is now one hostel room. There are two types of rooms to choose from - themed rooms styled like a hostel room from the 70's and the standard rooms. As a family of four adults, we stayed in two standard rooms - one King room and one Twin(2 single beds) room. Each room was clean and spacious and beds were comfortable. The rooms were more the size of a large hotel room with a lounge area including two lounge chairs, side table, dresser, tv cabinet, which was ample space for 2 people. The ensuite bathroom had a spacious shower with sliding glass doors and hand wash and bath wash is included. Other amenities are also included including towels, kettle, tv, in-room safe and hair dryer. The only thing about the room was the hot water was temperamental, it would sometimes flow smoothly while at times there was jumps between cold and hot water.

Breakfast at the cafe downstairs was included. The cafe has been designed like a retro Hong Kong cafe with three breakfast sets(Western, Chinese, Hong Kong style) to choose from for hostelers. Other than that there is also a museum on the ground floor showcasing the history of the area as well as communal amenities such as the kitchen, Chinese snooker table and coin-operated washing machines and dryers.

Being located in Sham Shui Po, it is only a 7 min walk to the Sham Shui Po MTR and less than 5 min to the nearest Park N Shop supermarket. It is also less than a 5 minute walk to the local markets located on Pei Ho and Fuk Wing Streets.

All in all, YHA Mei Ho House Youth Hostel was beyond our expectations. It was more like staying at a hotel but at hostel prices. Kenneth, Polly and the rest of the front of house staff were friendly and accommodating to all our needs. We will surely come back to stay again.

Stayed in two different Hostels on my January Hong Kong trip and YHA Mei Ho Hostel was about 4 times more bigger than the other place! It was very clean and the atmosphere from check in to check out had good positive vibes.

The four major things I judge a place are location, wifi, customer service and price.

Location - Subway is close by and was easy to navigate to and from the hostel as well as the airport. Area was well lit and appeared safe as well.

Wifi - No issues at all with Wifi. Worked at all times.

Customer Service - The staff were all very friendly and I had no issues with any of them. Thank you to Bonnie for making my check in hassle free.

Price - Price was well worth every penny.

Their breakfast wasn't satisfying but since it was free, I have no complaints.

not many hostel can offer you a clean room with shared private bathroom, free breakfast, and convenient public transport nearby. There are lots of small coffee shops nearby, open from 6 till 12am, serve local hongkong foods. Good place for those who want to explore other side of Hongkong city. Safe area for solo traveller, I arrived at Sham Sui Po bus stop around 9pm by airport bus and walked up to the hostel about 15min and nothing to be afraid off, because the hostel locate at the residential area.
tips: for people travel with parents or family try not to bring too much luggage as you need to climb up the hill (200m). Overall i love the hostel atmosphere

Stayed here a couple of nights in september. The ho(s)tel was very clean and neat, also was my room (took a two-person room with private shower and toilet). It's location is perfect, the MTR is a seven minute walk (Sham Shui Po, exit B2) and from there you can reach the whole city. The staff is very friendly and helpfull if you need anything or want something to know.
I'd defenitly recommend this place to everybody when you're looking for an affordable place to sleep.

Like I said, i stayed in September which means it gets very, very hot and humid in the city. I personally like it, but I can imagine 30+ degrees Celsius (86 degrees Fahrenheit) and an humidity of 85% or more aren't the most ideal circumstances for visiting this busy city.
For the rest, HK is a city you definetly should visit at least once in hour lief.

3 nights stay in a double room during end of Mar 2014, much more than a hostel, more like a comfortable no-frills hotel. Luxurious room size, comfortable, very clean and good sleep quality. We love the location of the hostel, lots of local food, local culture, wholesale toys, clothing, electronics etc… A unique cafe on L1 with Good breakfast. More importantly, very friendly Hostel staff.
