Former Cowboys kicker Brett Maher agrees to one-year deal with Denver Broncos

Brett Maher’s up-and-down Cowboys career has come to an end.

The former Cowboys kicker has agreed to terms on a one-year deal with the Denver Broncos.

Maher spent last season with Dallas, his third season across two stints with the Cowboys. Maher won the job in training camp in the summer of 2022 and had a solid year as the Cowboys’ starting kicker — up until the final three weeks of the season.

Maher, who’d hit 29 of 32 field goals and 50 of 52 extra points entering Week 18, missed an extra point in the last game of the regular season, then followed that up with a record-breaking four missed XPs in the Cowboys’ playoff opener against Tampa Bay. Another was blocked the following week vs. the 49ers. That appeared to permanently break his trust within the Cowboys’ organization.

At the Senior Bowl in February, Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones indicated that the team was “back to the drawing board” at kicker after a shaky postseason performance from Maher. Had the season ended two games earlier, Maher probably would have been re-signed to a three-year deal with the Cowboys.

The club already has added a familiar face at the position, signing Tristan Vizcaino this offseason, along with USFL standout Brandon Aubrey.

Vizcaino was signed as an insurance option before Dallas’ divisional round playoff against the San Francisco 49ers, joining the team’s practice squad after Maher’s XP-related yips. Vizcaino is 11-for-12 on career field goals, his longest from 47, and 15-of-20 on extra points.
