Marni's mother died when she was only five, but her friend Gemma has always been there for her. Ten years later, Marni is thrilled to learn that her mother's favorite poet is going to be teaching at an arts magnet school that she and Gemma want to attend. Gemma gets accepted, but Marni's father missed the registration deadline, so now there are only openings for diverse students. Gemma convinces Marni to take drastic steps to get into the school, but the girl's plans do not go as expected.
