2015 collection. Ace's ongoing anthologizing of the great music released by Ric and Ron Records between 1959 and 1963 continues with a set devoted to Eddie Bo, who enjoyed a career spanning six decades. It embraced some of the best music ever to come out of New Orleans. His nine Ric 45s (augmented here with four cuts that were not released for almost 50 years) include many highlights all presented from new transfers of the original Ric master-tapes. The tracks were recorded at Cosimo Matassa's Crescent City studio and feature the best musicians New Orleans had to offer. This is the first CD which compiles all Eddie Bo's Ric recordings.

Early, pre-funky recordings

I feel bad --- almost like a traitor --- for giving this CD only 3 stars, but this early material from Eddie Bo just didn't captivate me as much as I had hoped, certainly not as much as other songs that I've heard from him in the past. If you've heard any of the songs that this legendary New Orleans musician recorded in the late 1960s (and a handful from 1970) then you know how irresistibly soulful and funky he could be. Soul with a delightful New Orleans twist. But for the most part these 1959-1962 recordings don't have the same funky edge or appeal.

Part of the problem, at least for me, are the "sweet" strings-laden arrangements on many of these songs. The liner notes tell us that the producers added the strings "in an attempt to commercialize his sound". That might have been the thing to do at the time, but I don't think the syrupy arrangements did justice to Eddie Bo, nor have those songs aged particularly well. To be fair, this was a product of its time, and Eddie Bo was pretty much at the mercy of the producers in charge.

Thankfully, there ARE some great songs on this collection too, ones that demonstrate what a dynamic and engaging singer and performer that Eddie Bo could be. Tunes like "Every Dog Got His Day", "Warm Daddy", "Dinky Doo", "Roamin-Titus", and "I Got To Know" are infectious treats. Plus, I was excited to finally hear Eddie Bo's original version of "Check Mr. Popeye", a song I know only from the great cover version by Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes. I was not disappointed, Still a great song!

Other listeners might appreciate some of these earlier recordings more than I did. It's certainly not bad, just not what I was expecting. In any case, collectors can be confident that they are getting a quality package, knowing that this was reissued by Ace Records. The CD comes with a 12-page booklet that includes a short biography of Eddie Bo and details about these recordings, the line notes written by Tony Rounce.

　通説によればジャズ発祥の街とも言われるアメリカ・ルイジアナ州のニューオーリンズは、現在では、ピアニストの街としても知られる。有名無名はともかく、とにかく個性的で凄腕のピアニストがゴロゴロいるのだ。そんなニューオーリンズをピアニストの街にしたのが、プロフェッサー・ロングヘア、ファッツ・ドミノ、アラン・トゥーサン、そしてこのエディー・ボーといったピアニストだ。残念なことにこの四天王ともいうべき初期ニューオーリンズ・ピアニストたちは全員故人となってしまったが、その影響は後の音楽シーンに多大な影響を与えている。このアルバムは、その一人、エディー・ボー（本名はEdwin Bocage）のローカル・レーベルRicでの録音を完全収録した2015年の編集盤で、その目玉の一つは、アルバム・タイトルともなっている"Baby I'm Wise"だろう。この曲はリトル・リチャードによって改題されてヒットし、後にジョン・レノンもアルバム「ロックンロール」でカヴァーする。私はこの原曲が聴きたくて、数年前に入手困難であった編集盤の音源をAmazonでデジタル購入したのだが、その編集盤の版は、表題とヴォーカル以外は、リトル・リチャードの版と大差ないものであった。その録音の表題は"I'm Wise"というものであるが（最初期音源）、ここでの版は、表題が少し違うだけでなく、音源も、また一味違った雰囲気のものとなっている。
　実は、Ric音源は1988年にRounderからCDアルバム化されているが（当時は私はまだクラシック音楽と映画音楽、TV番組の音楽ぐらいしか知らないし興味のない子供で、そんなアルバムのことなど知る由もなかったが）、そのCDアルバム（"Check Mr. Popye"）は14曲収録で、このアルバムはそれよりも更に8トラック増の２２トラック収録となっており、表題曲のほかにも初めて耳にするが魅力的な音源が並ぶ。Every Dog Has(Got) His Dayなどは、私は、1995年のPiano Night音源のソロ・ピアノ弾き語り版がベストだと思っているが、このスタジオ録音版も、それはそれで素晴らしいと思う。
