St Edward's is seeking to appoint a bright and innovative part-time Assistant Director of Music from September 2024 or January 2025. The Assistant Director of Music will support the Director of Music in delivering Music throughout the School both within the classroom as well as in the co-curricular music provision. They will teach class music lessons from Year 7 upwards and oversee the development of the curriculum in the Lower School (Years 7-9). The Assistant Director will play a full role in the Music Department’s co-curricular programme and will have the opportunity to lead a range of ensembles and choirs. The Assistant will be fully involved in the running and organisation of the major concerts during the year, including the annual Carol Service at Tewkesbury Abbey and St Edward’s Spring Concert at Pittville Pump Room. The Assistant will also be the first point of contact for our dedicated team of Visiting Music Teachers. This role is equally suitable for an Early Career Teacher (ECT) aspiring to be a Director of Music or a more experienced teacher.


The Candidate

The successful candidate will:

show clear commitment to safeguarding children;

be a well-qualified graduate of Music or a related discipline;

have good keyboard skills

take a full role in leading and conducting ensembles, choirs and performances across the School;

plan and teach class lessons in an engaging manner in a highly successful Music department across all year groups from Year 7 upwards;

support the progress of all students studying Music by taking a role in departmental support and enrichment sessions;

assist with the development of partnership projects with local schools;

set clear expectations for pupil behaviour within an encouraging classroom environment;

The Assistant Director of Music will report to the Director of Music, and ultimately to the Head Teacher.

About the Role and You

Contract type: Part-time, permanent, 0.4 FTE

Salary: Commensurate with experience

Start date: September 2024

Your main responsibilities will include:

  • Planning, delivering and assessing engaging music lessons.
  • Inspire creativity, musical expression and technical skills in our students.
  • Teach music theory, performance and appreciation of genres.
  • Lead extracurricular music activities.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to enhance the overall music curriculum.
  • Promote outstanding progress and outcomes by students.
  • Adapt teaching to respond to the strengths and needs of every student.

We are looking for someone who:

  • Holds a bachelor’s degree in music.
  • Has QTS (essential).
  • Has at least 1 year’s experience teaching.
  • Has experience designing and implementing inspirational and engaging schemes of work.
  • Is flexible, adaptable and enthusiastic.
  • Has a strong commitment to continued personal development.
