4 Decks Winning With Small World

Small World might be the greatest consistency card we've seen in years.

just released, but I still haven't finished exploring the meta-breaking set that is !

While BODE introduces several new themes that are highly competitive, plus amazing support cards for older strategies, there's one super generic card that almost any deck can play and it's quickly sparked a ton of discussion. Our topic today is the ultra-splashable spell card, Small World.

Ok, so saying that Small World can fit in "almost any deck" might be a bit of a stretch. But it's pretty generic, since its effect is, simply put, "search for ANY monster." As long as you meet the requirements you can run it in a ton of different strategies.

Small World

Granted, it's those requirements where Small World gets complicated. Small World requires you to first off, have a monster in your hand. When you're resolving the effect, you show your opponent another monster in your deck, and it has to have the same Attribute, Type, Level, ATK or DEF points as the first monster you reveal. That doesn't sound tricky, but the hard part is that the in-hand monster and in-deck monster can only share exactly ONE of those traits. If they would share two or more, you've gotta find something else.

After you reveal your in-hand and in-deck monsters, you pick a third monster, again from your deck. That third monster is the one you'll add from your deck to your hand, but you can only choose it if it has exactly ONE trait that matches the second monster you revealed (that's the monster you showed from your deck).

After you add the third monster to your hand, you banish the other two monsters you revealed - the one you revealed from your hand and the first monster revealed from your deck. Both monsters are banished face-down.

Did You Get All Of That?

Explaining Small World is a bit of a challenge, so let's go through some examples.

Activate Small World and reveal…

Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring from your hand
And Junk Forward from your deck
To search Tour Guide of the Underworld to your hand

The only thing these three monsters have in common are their levels. In this example, you turned the Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring into a combo starter.

Activate Small World and reveal…

Aleister the Invoker from your hand
And D.D. Crow from your deck
To search Droll & Lock Bird to your hand

This one's slightly more complicated: Aleister the Invoker and D.D. Crow are both Dark, and then D.D. Crow and Droll & Lock Bird are both Level 1s, with everything else being different.

Activate Small World and reveal…

Effect Veiler from your hand
And Nibiru the Primal Being from your deck
To search Virtual World Mai-Hime - Lulu

Effect Veiler and Nibiru, the Primal Being are both Light monsters, while Nibiru, the Primal Being and Virtual World Mai-Hime - Lulu both have exactly 600 DEF.

Hopefully those examples give you a good idea of how cool this card is!

But Is It Practical?

Small World inherently a -1 in card economy. Some would say it's the same as something like Cynet Mining or One For One. But because you're banishing a card from your hand and a card from your deck, both face-down, that means you can't abuse it with cards that would trigger if they were banished face-up. The upside is that it isn't a cost to banish the cards for Small World, so if your opponent negates it with something like Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring, then you're not taking a big hit: it's just a 1-for-1 trade.

So because you're making this -1 commitment when Small World does resolve, the card you're searching has to be extremely rewarding to compensate. Here are some deck lists I found that do a great job of that.

The Small World Of Madolches

Starting off with Madolches, Coen Verhoeven took 1st Place at a European Regional Qualifier featuring Small World! Small World fits perfectly here since the Madolche deck only has nine good starter cards. Usually that's a challenge, but now, with Small World and Pot of Prosperity, the deck's more consistent.

If you do open with Small World and don't have any starters, then as long as you have a monster, you'll find a way to get to Madolche Petingcessoeur, Madolche Anjelly or Madolche Magileine. From what I can tell, here are some of the important options:

Reveal Psy-Framegear Gamma from hand, banish Dinowrestler Pankratops from deck, and search any Earth Madolche monster
Reveal Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring from hand, banish Madolche Hootcake from deck, and search any Level 4 Earth Madolche.

Dinowrestler Pankratops is going to be the key to most of the deck's combinations, working with cards like PSY-Framegear Gamma, Effect Veiler, Sauravis, the Ancient and Ascended or any Madolche you didn't need.

Verhoeven mentioned in the video linked above that if you already opened up with a Madolche starter card, he'd aim to use Small World to get Sauravis, the Ancient and Ascended so that he'd have a searchable answer to cards like Effect Veiler or Infinite Impermanence.

Small World an amazing addition to competitive Madolches and I hope more people will want to play it, since many of the cards have been reprinted and are now much easier to get.

More Copies Of Deep Sea Diva?

Water combo decks are probably the most terrifying things to lose the dice roll to this format. Especially now, since Small World makes them more consistent, and more likely to demolish you. If you can get to Deep Sea Minstrel, Atlantean Dragoons or Deep Sea Diva in your opening hand that's already an FTK. You've gotta do the work to rip your opponent's hand apart first, sure. But the deck is really, really good at doing that.

Yvon Boulet took 2nd Place with just such a deck, at his local OTS Qualifier early last month. While it was just a local level competition, this deck is not something I'd want to face at any level of event.

While Boulet may not be playing a full three copies of Small World, he did mention that he would have run a third if he had it.

Small World pretty easy to figure out in this deck, since everything is Water. Most of the monsters are Water attribute and Sea Serpent type, but that's where cards like Mermail Abyssteus and Mermail Abysspike come in. These are the cards you'll be banishing from the deck, most likely just to make the skip from a Sea Serpent, to an Aqua-type, and then back to a Sea Serpent.

There's not many things that can stop this deck once it goes off: if Deep Sea Diva resolves, you'll get Neptabyss, the Atlantean Prince so you can send Atlantean Dragoons to the graveyard and get another, triggering the first Dragoons to search Deep Sea Minstrel.

The Deep Sea Minstrel lets you see your opponent's entire hand and banish one of those cards for the turn, at the cost of discarding any Water monster. Ideally you play it before the Deep Sea Diva, so you can avoid cards like Effect Veiler, Infinite Impermanence or Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring for when you do eventually summon your Diva or Prince. Best case scenario, it even hits Nibiru, the Primal Being or Droll & Lock Bird if you hadn't used a search card beforehand.

If you don't open with Deep Sea Minstrel, then you'll have to summon the Diva or Prince and try to get Minstrel from there. If you have Atlantean Heavy Infantry though, it'll give you an additional Normal Summon for your Diva or Prince, so long as your opponent didn't have Effect Veiler or Infinite Impermanence to negate it. You'll still want to play Atlantean Heavy Infantry because it's a Water monster, and while it does get countered by those two hand traps, it helps you play through Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring since you'll have the bodies needed to make Crystron Halqifibrax with it.

How do you beat this? I believe if you open with two effect negation hand traps and you get lucky enough that the Water player doesn't hit them with Moulinglacia the Elemental Lord, or if you avoided a Triple Tactics Talent, then you'll have the hand trap you need to negate Crystron Halqifibrax or Mecha Phantom Beast Auroradon. Otherwise, you have to hope you can resolve Droll & Lock Bird or play Artifact Lancea. Then you can minimize the damage your opponent can do to your hand, and they'll pass back to you with a board of minimal disruption.

That might be why Boulet decided to Side Deck Artifact Lancea' perhaps he was anticipating a mirror match, or a lot of Tri-Brigade decks. I think not only did he have a good meta call, but there's actually synergy between the monsters he Side Decks thanks to Small World.

Because Artifact Lancea and Mermail Abyssteus both have 1700 ATK, Boulet can use Small World to banish a Water Sea Serpent, then banish Mermail Abyssteus to search Artifact Lancea if he needs to. He can even go the other way around, banishing Artifact Lancea, then Abyssteus to go get any Water Sea Serpent.

If you need Gameciel, the Sea Turtle Kaiju, you can just banish two other Waters that aren't Aqua-type, which in this case probably means Mermail Abysspike and any Sea Serpent, to get the Kaiju. I can only imagine that this deck could be even more consistent if it ran Pot of Prosperity! But perhaps with the rise of Droll & Lock Bird, and with Artifact Lancea being popular, that it's best not to play it at this time.

Speaking Of Another Synchro Combo Deck!

So why is Small World viable in this? This deck also has super-rewarding combo starting cards to search, like Ascator, Dawnwalker to help make Chaos Ruler, the Chaotic Magical Dragon for that sweet "mill five" effect. Or you can search for Junk Synchron, Doppel Warrior, or even Junk Converter if you have a Danger monster to start with. The Danger cards are a non-turn extender for the deck, but they're also an important bridge when you want to use Small World to get a Dark monster, since they have different types and Levels.

You want to see those starter cards reliably, because resolving Chaos Ruler, the Chaotic Magical Dragon or Junk Speeder is extremely helpful. Once Junk Speeder comes out and summons all your Tuners, you're set to make Crystal Wing Synchro Dragon and then continue your combo from there.

While this version of the deck doesn't play defensive cards like Sky Striker Mecha - Eagle Booster or Crossout Designator, it's certainly not a bad idea to focus on consistency, especially with a card like Small World. A card that not only searches starter cards, but also searches extenders like Doppel Warrior, too.

We've seen Synchron decks make Top Cuts every so often, but with Dimensional Barrier becoming more popular, a deck like this - which only makes Synchros exclusively - can auto-lose to just Barrier alone.

Not only that, but the deck has yet to solve the problem of Dark Ruler No More. If Konami ever released a Synchro that searches a Counter Trap, like Ib the World Chalice Justiciar or something on the same power level of Denglong, First of the Yang Zing, then this kind of deck might be pretty nuts!

I've seen some other recent online events showcasing just how good it is to play Small World in this strategy. Some played Dynatherium instead of Kinka-byo as their bridge, but both versions can search almost anything in the deck.

The reason to play Small World in this strategy was simple: the deck wants to open specifically with Lyrilusc - Turquoise Warbler and Lyrilusc - Cobalt Sparrow, so it can have the strongest combo in its opening hand. Those two cards are both searchable with Lyrilusc Bird Call. If you opened with Tri-Brigade Fraktall, Lyrilusc - Turquoise Warbler works too, sending Lyrilusc - Cobalt Sparrow to the graveyard to start the combo that way. With Small World in the mix, your chances of setting up that opener are much higher, and it boosts your chance to make other plays as well.

If you opened with any of the Level 1 Wind Winged Beast besides Lyrilusc - Beryl Canary and you don't need them for the combo, then you can use Small World to banish Kinka-byo from your deck and search any Wind Winged Beast Level 1 you're missing. Note that Kinka-Byo and Lyrilusc - Beryl Canary both have 200 DEF and they're both Level 1, so that isn't an option in this list.

If you opened with too many copies of Tri-Brigade Fraktall, then you can use a Tri-Brigade Fraktall to send Tri-Brigade Nervall to the graveyard to search Tri-Brigade Kerass. From there, use Small World to banish the Tri-Brigade Kerass, to banish Kinka-byo from your deck, to get a Level 1 Wind Winged Beast.

Any of those combinations can also be used to search Droll & Lock Bird, which is great if you've already finished your combo. It's a strong addition to an end field of Number F0: Utopic Draco Future, Simorgh, Bird of Sovereignty, and Mist Valley Apex Avian, amongst other interruptions.

Final Small Thoughts

What does this all mean? Well in short, Small World is a good card. But it's only as good as the combo you're using it to support, and it only works if your combo pieces are searchable and work with Small World] restrictions. That might mean you'll have to play some weird card choices just to have a "bridge" for your reveals.

There's a lot of potential for Small World in other decks too, like Floowandereeze, where you can banish a Wind Winged Beast at Level 1 to banish Effect Veiler and then search Floowandereeze & Robina.

Altergeist decks have lots of Spellcasters, of all sorts of different attributes, Levels and stats. We also just got Altergeist Pookuery, which helps the deck make Altergeist Hexstia on Turn 1, but becomes sort of a blank card afterwards unless you have Personal Spoofing. When Pookuery becomes useless, Small World can help turn it into a Altergeist Multifaker if you banish something like Altergeist Marionetter from the deck as well.

Virtual Worlds might seem like a deck that can use Small World too, since resolving Virtual World Mai-Hime - Lulu is pretty valuable. But just like Floowandereeze, Virtual World might not need the card, or may not find it to be rewarding enough to compensate for the inherent minus of card economy.

There's other decks out there with strong 1-card combos, such as Scrap Recycler, or even Speedroid Terrortop, and many of them can use Small World to boost consistency. If you're ever wondering about the potential of Small World in your deck, I'd suggest using this fan-made site, where you can enter your deck and find all the possible paths you can take when resolving Small World. To use it, you'll also need a deck list exported as a YDK file. For that, I'd recommend using this site to do so beforehand.

I'm sure that we're only seeing the first hints of [Small World's] potential when it comes to competitive combo decks. I can see this card sticking around for a long, long time, since it's a great choice whenever your deck needs that extra boost of consistency.
