The addition of Warren Buffett’s daughter Susan Alice Buffett to the Berkshire Hathaway Inc. board doesn’t fit the profile of the typical director diversity appointment. She will serve alongside her brother, who’s the probable next chairman when her father steps down.

Unlike most publicly traded companies that are limited to a pool of candidates who tend to skew White and male, family-run companies have more leeway to prepare women for future roles almost from childhood. Ford Motor Co., ViacomCBS Inc., Tyson Foods Inc. and Campbell Soup Co. have corporate boards that include female scions from the controlling family.
