"Adventures in Game Chasing" is a 2022 comedy adventure film directed by Billy "Chaser" Hudson. Also starring Billy and his duo counterpart Jay Hatfield, the two take on starring roles into an embellished adventure into absurdity and gaming that is a fun fictional adventure based upon their true to life experiences on their YouTube channel. "The Game Chasers" show was incepted between the pair in 2010, as a video game take on the popular "American Pickers" (2010 - current) show that took the world by storm that same year. Easily getting into the game market at an accessible point than it is now, the videos invite the viewer to travel with the pair from flea market to small town antique…
Billy and Jay (Billy Chaser and Jay Hatfield) are two lifelong friends who now as unemployed adults yearn for their youth when they used to play NES games at Billy's now-deceased grandad's house.
Desperate for cash they decide to go on a road trip to hunt down Billy's old Nintendo console believing it might be worth something on the retro gamers market.
It is but not enough to justify a road trip to Colorado or the absurd 100 mins runtime.
Spun off from a popular youtube channel The Game Chasers which has about 150K subs and over 30 million views this is, to say the least, an ill-advised attempt at a motion picture.
The budget drops by the frame and…
highlights of this movie include:
- watching the budget rapidly decrease from scene to scene
- the numerous shots of characters staring intensely at 8 bit eric’s bare ass
A shockingly competent movie considering the standards other Youtuber movies have set. Aside from an especially bad scene in the climax that involves the Kickstarter mob, this mostly comes off like a professional film.
Why does Billy, the largest Game Chaser, not simply kill his opponents?
These YouTuber movies never end up being good; I knew that going in. I still, however, had to support the chodes over at Game Chasers by backing their campaign and giving this one a watch. Surprisingly, this film was by far the most competently made of the bunch. The camera quality, cinematography, and editing were pretty much as good as they can get for a project of this nature. The plot, acting, and dialogue, however, were nothing to write home about. It got a few laughs out of me, but I found myself completely zoned out way more often.
I owe a good portion of my introduction and appreciation for retro video games to them. The cameos from folks I used to rewatch in my subscription feed brought a smile to my face. OKchief!?! oh my goddddd lol. It always fascinated me how YouTubers from this particular era needed to release a movie (Happy Console Gamer, AVGN, or even bigger channels like Smosh). I should marathon it all.
Making a movie based on a YouTube reality show where two friends look for old video games is definitely a choice. Look I love The Game Chasers series but unfortunately I just don’t think this was a good plot for a movie. There are definitely some fun moments but at times the dialogue and acting is pretty insane. I also felt like this could have been cut down quite a bit. By the third act I was ready for it to be over. I respect the grind though. I understand that these aren’t experienced filmmakers. I can definitely see the love that was put into this. The special effects at the beginning were also impressively well done. I wish they were able to do more of that kind of stuff.
This was not funny. I realize these guys are not actors but man was this painful to get through. The fact that they ripped off a joke from Dumb and Dumber 40 mins in made me want scream. Stick with YT guys, making movies isn't your forte.
