  2. Ten Hag praises Onana

    Andre Onana

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag was encouraged by goalkeeper Andre Onana's debut in Houston, even though he ended up on the losing side against Real Madrid.

Onana played for the full 90 minutes and showed his willingness to venture out of his penalty area to start attacks. He passed the ball with both feet and made a couple of good saves, even though he was slightly flat-footed for Real's second goal.

"He was good, solid and made two very good saves," said Ten Hag. "He was there when the team needed him and he did his job.

"He is a keeper that we can use as a plus one at the back.

"This is only the first game. There are rules we have to follow but we will integrate him in our style of play quickly."

  3. Henderson has to 'fight' for his place

    Simon Stone

    BBC Sport in Houston

Goalkeeper Dean Henderson was missing again last night as Man Utd lost 2-0 to Real Madrid.

The United keeper is still to play during pre-season after suffering a major thigh injury during his loan spell at Nottingham Forest in January.

Andre Onana's £47.2m arrival from Inter Milan has effectively ended Henderson's hopes of securing the number-one spot at Old Trafford.

Whilst uncertainty remains over the future of Tom Heaton, Henderson is unlikely to want to hang around just to sit on the bench.

"We have a group of keepers," said Ten Hag.

"As with everyone else, you have to fight for your position.

"We have to see when he can return to team training."

  4. Ten Hag waits on Mainoo injury news

    Simon Stone

    BBC Sport in Houston

Erik ten Hag will wait anxiously to discover the extent of the injury that forced Kobbie Mainoo out of last night's defeat by Real Madrid.

After an eye-catching performance against Arsenal on Saturday, Ten Hag selected the 18-year-old to play against even stronger opposition in Houston.

Ten Hag wanted to see if Mainoo could play two big games in a short space of time as he assesses the midfielder's likely role in his squad this season.

But Mainoo lasted a matter of minutes before Rodrygo accidently collided into him after being barged by Casemiro.

"You never can tell straight after the game," said Ten Hag. "We have to wait for the diagnosis."

"Today is a sad day for me," Silva said on social media.

"Today it is time to say goodbye to what I have dedicated my whole life to. Today it is time to say goodbye to my colleagues, who are like family to me. I will miss you very much."

  9. Silva retires from football

    David Silva

    In other news...

Former Manchester City midfielder David Silva has announced his retirement from football.

The 37-year-old won four Premier League titles with City alongside the 2010 World Cup and 2008 and 2012 Euros with Spain.

He spent the last three seasons at Real Sociedad.

  10. 'On the path to stardom'

    Joe Rindl

    BBC Sport

    Rasmus Hojlund

Manchester United are in need of a centre-forward. With Anthony Martial spending much of last season sidelined through injury, Marcus Rashford has become the team's talisman.

The England striker was exceptional last term, scoring 30 goals in 56 games - one every 143 minutes. But his best position is wide on the left, cutting in on his stronger right foot.

United chose not to sign Burnley loanee Wout Weghorst on a permanent deal at the start of this transfer window.

They have privately ruled out making approaches for Paris St-Germain's Kylian Mbappe and Tottenham's Harry Kane, who are both world-class frontmen.

What they would get with Rasmus Hojlund is raw potential.

But there are signs of quality, glimpses that suggest he is on the path to stardom.

  11. How does Hojlund match up against Haaland?

    Joe Rindl

    BBC Sport

    Rasmus Hojlund

So the potential is there, but when you compare his numbers with Erling Haaland's, Rasmus Hojlund is a long way off the Norwegian.

Haaland hit 36 goals in 35 appearances for Manchester City in the league last season - a goal every 77 minutes. In Serie A, Hojlund found the net every 204 minutes.

That said, Haaland had a record-breaking season, is two years older, plays for the European champions and is further along in his career.

Hojlund has only had two full seasons as a professional. In Haaland's second season, he managed a more modest 12 goals in 25 appearances for Molde.

So while Hojlund is not the finished article, he can be moulded and refined and may become the perfect fit for United's starting XI.

  12. Fish rejoins Hibernian on season-long loan

    Manchester United

Manchester United defender Will Fish has rejoined Hibernian on a second season-long loan.

The 20-year-old made 21 appearances for the Easter Road side last term, scoring three goals.

Fish has been on United's pre-season tour in the United States.

Hibs manager Lee Johnson told his club website: "During his first season with us he showed that he is a player with real quality and he adds composure and consistency to our back-line."

  13. PSG and Man Utd battle for Hojlund

    Rasmus Hojlund

The Athletic have been reporting today that Paris St-Germain have made a 50m euros (£42.8m) bid for Atalanta forward Rasmus Hojlund.

This comes after Manchester United were linked with the 20-year-old after manager Erik ten Hag said the club has "made progress" in their search for a new number nine.

With reports today suggesting United hope to sign Hojlund before the new Premier League season begins.

  14. The player exodus to Saudi Arabia

    Roberto Firmino

Jordan Henderson is the latest in a number of big-name players to move to Saudi Arabia this summer.

His former Liverpool team-mate Roberto Firmino, whose contract with the Anfield club had expired, joined Al-Ahli, who also signed Senegal keeper Edouard Mendy from Chelsea and have agreed a £30m deal for Manchester City winger Riyad Mahrez.

Al-Ittihad, meanwhile, have already brought in former Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema, ex-Chelsea midfielder N'Golo Kante and Portuguese forward Jota from Celtic.

Al-Hilal, who have made a world record £259m bid for Paris St-Germain forward Kylian Mbappe, have signed Portugal midfielder Ruben Neves from Wolves and Senegal defender Kalidou Koulibaly from Chelsea.

SMS Message: Curious how Henderson's England career is impacted. I initially assumed that it would be over but Southgate isn't the type to drop squad members on a whim so he may well retain his place. If he's picked, he would certainly be the first Saudi based player in the squad. from Michael

  18. Hitzlsperger on Henderson move

Former Germany and Premier League midfielder Thomas Hitzlsperger, who came out as gay after he retired from football, questioned the move. He said Henderson could "play wherever he wants to play" but added he was "curious to know though how the new brand Jordan Henderson will look like". Hiztlsperger tweeted: "I did believe for a while that his support for the community would be genuine. Silly me…"

  20. Henderson is the only captain I had - Klopp

    Jordan Henderson

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp says it'll be "strange" not having Jordan Henderson at the club.

The 33-year-old has been captain at Liverpool since Steven Gerrard left in 2015.

"I know it was a really, really tough decision for Hendo [Henderson] and I was around or with him all the way," Klopp told the club website.

"It's sad, absolutely strange, because he is the only captain I had here at Liverpool, but I think it is exciting for him as well.

"We will miss him, without a shadow of a doubt, that's clear - as a man and as a player. But, as I said, that's football."

Henderson played 492 times for the Reds, scoring 33 goals and registering 57 assists.

Klopp added: "He is technically really, really good. Which sometimes players, because of the role they see themselves [in] on the pitch, this fighter and stuff like this, don't always show.

"You cannot have this amount of Premier League games, you cannot be captain of Liverpool, you cannot play in the most important games in the world if you are technically not on a super-high level - and he is.

"Top-class professional, top bloke and a really, really, really good player. That's what you need to be if you want to play that long for Liverpool."
