Product Description

The mother died under the executioner's axe; the daughter rose to become England's greatest monarch -- the brilliant and cunning Queen Elizabeth I. Jean Simmons portrays young Bess in this rich tapestry of a film that traces the tumultuous, danger-fraught years from Elizabeth's birth to her unexpected ascension to the throne at a mere 25. Charles Laughton reprises his Academy Award -winning* role as her formidable father Henry VIII. Deborah Kerr plays her last stepmother (and Henry's last of six wives), gentle Catherine Parr. And Simmons' then real-life husband, Stewart Granger, adds heroics as Lord Admiral Thomas Seymour. In a resplendent world of adventure, romance and court intrigue, Young Bess reigns.

I especially liked this movie because it was a romantic movie expressing young love in ancient times.

MGM spared no expenses in 1953 in bringing to life the young years of Elizabeth TUDOR. With an inspired direction by George SYDNEY,and such distinguished actors as Charles LAUGHTON,Stewart GRANGER,Deborah KERR and Jean SIMMONS,and the marvelous sets and ostumes this is really a must. The ARCHIVE COLLECTION DVD from Warner home video is in very good shape for such an old movie, and we even get an early stereo sound, very rare for a 1.33 ratio picture,as stereophonic sound in 1953 was mostly intended to Cinemascope pictures, so the pleasure is double to hear a great Miklos ROZSA score in stereo !

My husband and I have been really enjoying seeing this movie again! The Tudor Period in England has always been so interesting to us, the portrayal of the characters and the dialogue are wonderful, and because we’d lived in London and have visited many of the locations that are portrayed in the film, it is also personally very enjoyable to us.

Jean Simmons is a very beautiful and fiery Queen Elizabeth I from babyhood to the age of 25.She falls in love with Tom Seymour. I don't know if that part is true or not but the rest seems about right. I liked the movie a lot! Very well done and acted.

I own this on VHS and am looking forward to when it's translated to DVD. I enjoy this 1953 film for its sets, costuming, and Technicolor treatment, but I can't say the same for Jean Simmons in the title role. She takes a valiant shot at portraying the temperamental Bess, but she just isn't convincing, maybe because she's too old for the part and she's trying too hard to make the rest of us believe that she isn't. I also don't care for Stewart Granger's performance as Thomas Seymour. It too is unconvincing because Granger plays him as a cheerful, romantic bon vivant while the real Seymour was a swaggering, hot-headed schemer who plotted to seize power from his older brother who was Lord Protector of England during the first half of Edward VI's reign. Rex Thompson, who plays Edward, does a cute job, but the real-life boy king was too precocious and serious to behave like your next-door neighbor's kid. I do enjoy Deborah Kerr as an elegant, dignified Catherine Parr, but Parr in reality was called "Kate" and not "Cathy", and Thomas Seymour viewed her as just as much a stepping-stone in his schemes as he did Bess. Charles Laughton's reprisal of his old Henry VIII role is a delight; I saw him in the title role of "The Private Life of Henry VIII" and very much enjoyed his work.

This is an entertaining movie and not a documentary. So, why not show "how it could have happened". This is what makes history interesting and exciting. The story is very well written, the actors are superb. And there is this sparkling chemistry between Jean Simmons, Stewart Granger and Deborah Kerr I miss so badly in modern movies. This is GOOD OLD HOLLYWOOD (even it is mostly british). I hope that in the near future somebody produces a good DVD!! This movie is one of my all time favorites!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Corny but good
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 28, 2012
We had this on VHS but it was wearing out. The film is typical Hollywood corn, but highly enjoyable if you can set aside the real history, still it's just as accurate if not more so than 'The Tudors' was. With Jean Simmons, one of Britains best actresses starring it makes the film even more watchable.

4.0 out of 5 stars REGION FREE AND HISTORIALLY QUITE ACCURATE - A SUMPTIOUS EPIC FROM THE GOLDEN AGE OF HOLLYWOOD
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 15, 2015
Jean Simmons and Stewert Granger star in one of Hollywoods lavish historical epic productions from the 1950's and one which is surprisingly accurate historically. It covers Elizabeth l from birth to her ascendancy of the throne. Jean Simmons puts in a spirited performance and whilst she does not possess the regal poise of Glenda Jackson (possiibly the best Elizabeth) she does imbue Elizabeth with a sense of passion for Thomas Seymour (Granger) that Glenda Jackson never did.

Deborah Kerr is also good as the doomed Catherine Parr and Charles Laughton reprises his role as Henry Vlll. The 4:3 picture on this Region Free DVD is very sharp indeed for non blu ray and the sound features the short lived "Stereophonic" wannabe sound system "Perspecta Sound" which whilst not true stereo gave a steophonic effect in cinemas by boosting a mono sound signal to different speakers dotted around the cinema in sync to movement on the screen. On a 7.1 sound system they do give a slightly "hollow" but surprisingly good stereo effect with dialougue moving across the front 3 channels in keeping with the action on the screen and music and effects routed to the surround speakers in a sort of "phased mono surround" (a bit like the old Dolby Surround effect)
