Johansen really turns it out. This is a pretty cool selection of cuts that Rhino serves up. I was really impressed with the Buster Poindexter selections that were on here. I absolutley loved One of the Poorest People and Heart of Gold. The Animals medley is also killer and nothing proves chops like coming close to Eric Burdon and his work. I would not buy this collection if I were looking to it for the Dolls selections which aren't bad but there is better. His solo stuff and Poindexter stuuf is really cool. It seems the Johansen has alot of heart under that designer lavish shirt
This compilation showcases David Johansen's career from his wild and shocking period with the New York Dolls, through his mostly fine solo albums, and finally his reincarnation as "Buster Poindexter." About the only thing this collection doesn't offer are cuts from his recent blues-rock albums, but seeing as how this was released in 1995, that wouldn't have yet been possible.
Rhino Records put together this CD compilation, so you can trust it's very well done, complete with a detailed booklet and essay about Johansen. That said, I'm far from satisfied with this package. I realize that they were trying to offer a fairly well-rounded "best of" career retrospective, but I think they should have just left off the New York Dolls tracks (there are only two, which in itself is far from adequate) and concentrated on his solo works with maybe a few of the Buster tunes thrown in.
As is stands, it's a mixed bag of styles, which is okay if you're a diehard David Johansen fan. But if you want to properly hear the Dolls stuff, get one of those CDs, or the same goes for the Buster Poindexter material. As for Johansen solo, there still hasn't been a proper collection with more than the 11 DJ tracks that you get here. There is another CD collection called "Crucial Music" that focuses on the material from his solo albums, but that CD only has 10 tracks! Sigh. So, we wait. Maybe a 2-CD set is the answer!
For a better offering of what Johansen has done, at least in a live context (his live material is only represented by the awesome Animals medley on this CD), check out the generous 18-track "David Johansen Group Live" CD that Sony put out a few years back. That one smokes! This collection ain't bad, but I think it could have been stronger.
