This past year, in my Men's Bible Study group, we were studying about manhood. During that session Steve McQueen and his movies (especially Bullit) came up as examples of the image of the man's-man being silent, strong, and never showing emotion.

Then when I found this documentary I had to watch it.

+ Very informative background on Steve growing up and how he not only got into movies but forged his way as an actor

+ Very sad many of his life choices and how empty it left this movie star.

+ About the 55-minute mark, out of an 80-minute movie, is when it turned more toward Steve's spiritual choices and what he found to finally fill the void he had been trying to fill with everything else in the world and having the means to try it all (money, fame, women, drugs, adrenaline rush, etc.)

OVERALL:
A very enjoyable and educational movie.
I think those with an open mind for the ending content and what Steve found to fill the gaps in his life, could be the answer to fill the viewer's gaps as well (if the viewer recognizes they have gaps that need filling OR if they are not too busy to stop and think about the deeper things in life, regardless of their biases created from whatever background/history they grew up with.

Had wanted to see this film when it was released last year but was unable to due to scheduling. However, watching on the small screen was a great experience. The movie spends much of its time setting up the life of Steve McQueen. It reveals a lot of information I was not aware of concerning his desperate childhood and personal issues. It has many one on one interviews with Hollywood actors, such as Mel Gibson, and openly discusses the actors issues, rise to fame, and emptiness he felt despite his wealth and success.

The movie also includes some rare audio tape of Steve McQueen made just before his death where he discusses his Christian faith. I think you'll find that Steve was a great actor and prortrayer of the human condition yet lacked the ability to communicate his thoughts as clearly when speaking. This left me with the impression of a man who was being honest and sincere when speaking of his faith. The film also discusses the people God put in his path and even interviews them as well as his wife.

This was a very well done film and provided a very thorough investigation of an American icon and his journey from lost soul to save soul. My only comment would be that we would love to see more about his time as a Christian and how that changed him. It is discussed but could be expanded.

We enjoyed watching this video, that was more like a documentary than a movie. (A little hyperbole at the beginning about Steve McQueen’s film career and impact, but more balanced after that.) Loved learning how Steve was unsatisfied by celebrity and fortune, and ultimately found his identity, purpose and redemption in Jesus Christ. We don’t hear much about Hollywood stars who choose to follow Jesus, so this was a nice surprise!

I loved the DVD. It could not have been better. The problem is with Amazon. I had purchased copies as gifts for others and a copy for myself. I tried reordering another copy as a gift for another friend. Amazon had shown the item as available and in stock, but “cut me off” and refused my right to purchase other copies. I called and spoke with two different Amazon reps and they informed me that they could not override the maximum to allow me the opportunity to order more. Personally, I believe, (in my heart), that I may have been “cut-off” because this is a Christian based film. Why, (in the United States), would one be denied the right to purchase as many copies as I want. I may now find that my restriction has been lifted. I hope so for the sake of freedom.
