What travelers are saying
- Kevin WLondon270 contributionsI've drunk a little bit of port over the years but am far from a connoisseur. I decided to spend a little less on my accommodation in Porto and a bit more on the port tours, I booked the Guided Tour and Super Premium Tawny Tasting (in English) for 65 EUR. On the day they said I could select which tasting I wanted and I had a change of mind and switched to the vintage selection. The tours are only on certain days and look relatively infrequent so I would recommend booking this one first for your trip and book in advance.
Our tour was small, around 12 people making it very personal. Our tour guide, Silvia (I hope I have that right), was excellent giving a clear overview of the company, history, production process and answering questions as we walked around their quiet cellar. The tasting room is very smart and we had a guided tasting of our selections. The vintage set is 1994, 2000, 2016. I found the vertical tasting very interesting with the aging clearly showing for the pre-2016 ones. I don't think I'd ever buy a bottle of the 94 as it's pricey but it was a great chance to try it. I bought an extra Tawny 20 year old sample for comparison (maybe for 8EUR?) - very different and very good.
Graham's is a bit tucked away and you may wish to allow an extra ten minutes or so in case you take a wrong turn in the twisty maze of hilly streets nearby.
As I left I noticed the restaurant. It's a beautiful location perhaps aided by the fine weather on the day I visited. There's a lot of option in Porto/Vila Nova de Gaia, but I'll investigate that if/when I return.
I booked directly on the website and waiting (two days) for the email acknowledgement. From reviews I see some people book via third parties - I cannot see how introducing a middleman into the process adds value here.Written May 6, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Our guide Carole was very knowledgeable and helpful when choosing Port to take home.
The Port was delicious, I wasn’t a huge fan of port prior to my trip to Porto, however I am now converted after trying some amazing Port on offer here.
Love that it is a family run business unlike some of the larger companies offering tours in the area. Much prefer to spend money with a family business.Written April 30, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Joanna our guide was charming and informative and was able to answer all our questions about our favourite drink! We choose to add on a guided tasting of 4 vintage ports at the end and we’re really pleased that we did.
I did have a considerable amount of trouble booking this tour with Taylor’s but I am so glad I persisted! We finished with much at the Barao Fladgate restaurant. A perfect end to the tour .Written May 8, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - FlyMaliToTheMoon29 contributionsWe booked the 50mts English tour, with three tastings at the end. It was a nice introduction to Port, the region and history. We were glad we chose this tour with Sandeman over others as it was the first and oldest Port making establishments.
The tasting at the end was generous, and we were able to stay at our leisure and enjoy the tastings.
However, as we stepped outside, we saw that Sandeman had their own cocktail terrace outside, and we spent a lovely hour in the sun with delicious and unusual Port cocktails alongside bowls of olives, rosemary crisps, fresh sourdough bread selections from their appetiser menuWritten May 7, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. This includes a tasting of white & dry, late bottled vintage (LBV) and Tawny 10 year old. I was particularly interested in the white ports as they are uncommon and I hadn't tried any of those.
There must have been an electronic display that told me this as I knew our tour had 28 people. Rafael has a clear voice and our tour worked well for 28 but perhaps 45 would have been too many. Even with the large group of 28 he could still answer all the questions in the tour time. I can see some other reviews where the tour suffered from being too large.
You get 15 minutes in the small museum at the start to browse the exhibits. I thought this might be pointless padding but it turned out to be spacious and surprisingly useful for setting the scene before the guided tour in the cellar. The glass case showing a sample of different soils is very good for conveying the poor soil that's strangely suitable for vines.
The tasting at the end is a bit impersonal in the large room but I had a very enjoyable chat with my neighbours on the table. I didn't ask but there wasn't any water on offer at the tasting and I see another review suggesting there isn't any. That would be a useful addition.
One interesting thing to note about the cellars used for tours in Porto/Gaia is they are all in use for maturation along with some others up the hill. It's common elsewhere in the world to keep some nice old looking stuff just for show and have a stainless steel chemical engineering plant elsewhere doing the real work.Written May 6, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Laura SVila Nova de Gaia, Portugal12 contributionsDefinitely visit in the evening for a breathtaking sunset and a stunning view of Porto from above. - jaybeeFLPalm Harbor, FL3,380 contributionsSpent the morning hours touring old town Porto by tuk tuk and then a terrific fish lunch riverside. Took a ferry across to Gaia from the Ribeira with the intent to do a few port wine tastings. First stop was the Ramos cellar and a flight of some very tasty ports--the 20 year old tawny and the ruby were our favorites. Next stop Sandemans but it was getting late and too close to closing time so we just ambled through, bought a souvenir and headed back to the Ribeiro for a delicious Portuguese meal and several bottles of Vinho Verde.Written May 12, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - paulandc0Sintra, Portugal1,980 contributionsI have wanted to see this place for a long time. But I guess, to fully appreciate it, you have to be living in the area, so you can make the best of the changing lights and incoming tides.
The beach around can be quite crowded in the summer, so perhaps best to repeat in another season.Written August 18, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Marcia, our tour guide, was not only incredibly knowledgeable about the history and production of port, but was such an entertaining orator. She welcomed questions and had some amusing anecdotes to add to her information. It is a credit to her that I can recall most of the salient points and have a deeper appreciation of port in its various guises. I would highly recommend this tour; especially if you are fortunate enough to have Marcia as your guide.Written May 13, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
