The Casual Vacancy immerses the reader in a richly peopled, densely imagined world...intelligent, workmanlike, and often funny."--The Guardian (UK)

"A vivid read with great, memorable characters and a truly emotional payoff....Rowling captures the humanity in everyone."--
People

"I had come under the spell of a great novel....A big, ambitious, brilliant, profane, funny, deeply upsetting and magnificently eloquent novel of contemporary England, rich with literary intelligence....This is a deeply moving book by somebody who understands both human beings and novels very, very deeply."--
Lev Grossman, Time

"Often entertaining....Rowling does a nice job laying out her 20-plus characters' endless pretensions and weaknesses, which she punctures with gleeful flicks of a surprisingly sharp comic blade."--

"The Casual Vacancy" is without doubt a book that did not leave me indifferent. Engaging to the point of reading it in any spare moment I had, and sacrificing hours of sleep, it's also very thrilling (which is part of the secret for being so engaging). The characters and setting are extremely real, so real that they are gritty.

The book portrays a small suburban town in which the apparently idyllic lives of its inhabitants hide layer over layer of unhappiness, contempt, envy and resentment that will surface and come to a climax by an apparently innocuous event: The sudden death of one of their citizens, a person nobody was indifferent to and that left a mark in everybody else, if only by comparison.

I just couldn't leave the book without knowing what would happen to its very varied and full of life characters, which the author ends up dissecting to find the darkest corners that lurk in every one of us. In the end, when I finally finished it, I was thinking how strange it is that a book that left such a disturbing sensation inside me can also be something I cannot but recommend to anybody.

I felt quite surprised with this book. I imagined J K Rowling would want to get distant from Harry Potter. I did not expect another Harry Potter book. However, the crude, sad and dramatic scenario that The Casual Vacancy describes has shocked me and taken me by surprise.
I feel sad saying that I cannot see myself reading this book ever again. Sorry.

Poco a poco desvelando las historias personales, los sentimientos y pensamientos íntimos y el carácter de los personajes que van construyendo la historia. A la vez que los hechos los cambian o los matizan, ellos se nos descubren.

Pointless trying to review this as you don’t accept a review in English of a book that’s written in English

I love JK Rowling, the way she writes is fantastic and everything, BUT this book is taking me forever to read since its way too repetitive, too descriptive and that gets to be way too dull.

Her Cormoran Strike books are FANTASTIC though. Maybe the main subject of this book wasn't that interesting to write about, idk.

One must read this novel with an open mind and without expectations, if one is to enjoy this novel. Casual Vacancy is a complete different reading experience from J.K. Rowling's previous works. It is a good choral novel with any characters in a tiny town, each with their secrets and motivations. It took me some time to figure out what the purpose of it all was. I found the beginning/introduction of characters a bit too long and it struck me as dull until I reached a certain point when it started to make sense. And then I loved it.

The story is one thing, but to see how almost everybody struggled was enlightening, the same as every character has their own view to interpret the same observations so differently.

The first 100 pages or so are a bit slow but once we get to know who's who then the novel picks up the pace and never slows down.

Town's description and politics may feel a little bit alien to us but after some time you will be deeply immersed and invested in characters it doesn't even matter. We feel like we know everyone in Pagford. Thats great writing.

Everything builds upto the climax which explodes(in a good way). As JK said "A big novel about a small town."

What scrutiny J K Rowling gives to the ordinary and extraordinary lives in this book. With waspish observations, laugh out loud and cry out loud moments. Very real - we all know these people, and we have all been guilty of their crimes and their prejudices. Brilliant

This is a very engrossing, beautifully written novel with enormously interesting characters and a complex & winding plot most cleverly structured. A bit of a social commentary a la Austen for modern times. Highly recommended.
