This is a pretty darn good CD, especially if you like Joan Baez. Most young people today have never heard of her, let alone heard her sing. Some of my children have listened politely to me playing some of her songs, but I know they don't really enjoy it. I suppose it's because they don't have the feel of the 60's and what the music was so much about, ideas, etc.
Anyway, this CD is pretty good, and I really liked hearing several songs I never heard her play back when I was young. A couple of them are very humorous. The only downside to the CD was a couple of my favorite songs, this particular rendition wasn't exactly what was on some of my old LP records. Sometimes this was less pleasing, and sometimes, it was not. Bottom line is out of the 22 songs, I found 14 that are now on my iPod, so I can listen to them wherever I go.

A friend to whom I commented I'd gotten this album gave me the title for the review. "Oh, that's back when she was a folk singer." I asked what she is now, and the reply was, "She's crossed over to something like pop." Some listeners may not care for the old-time folk songs, yet they are my favorites. Extracted from Celtic songs, they have an old-world feel that appeals to me. There are more modern songs in the lineup, but the whole collection is from the '60s. That also suits me, since I was young then, too. Joan's voice is pure gold and great for jangled nerves when I am driving in heavy traffic. This album will be with me on many a road trip.

I have the LP (a double set) not this CD. I have worn it out over the years because the performances are hauntingly good. My favorites are Tears In My Eyes, Man of Constant Sorrow, Railroad Bill and Silver Dagger. The unfortunate thing about the CD version is that they cut two tracks: Streets of Laredo and My Good Old Man, which was also a favorite of mine. It's hard to believe this album was recorded in 1963, because it could have been 2003 since the songs have and will stand the test of time. That's a testament to Joan's craft. What a talent!

Only thing detrimental, I think, is the live audience clapping after each piece. Otherwise, great music!! One or two pieces are little trite, but then, Joan was just starting out. Favorite piece is "Riddle Song" with Pete Seeger - I bought this specifically because it is one of my favorite lullabies for young children.

I would not recommend purchasing this CD to anyone. I listened to it once the day I received it in the mail. The sound quality is terrible. The volume is inconsistent and goes from loud to quiet and back and makes you dizzy listening to it. I thought this would be a great live recording to hear the beauty of her voice. Instead, the quality is so poor that I could not finish listening to the CD. My husband has more tolerance for live recordings and he was not interested in it either.

This is the music that guaranteed this artist a place among the music goddesses. I heard her the first time, on tv news clip about a civic rights demonstration. Peter , Paul, and Mary were singing. I really liked them. Then this other person slipped bhindthem and began singing descant, clearly spontaneous and unrehearsed.
She had a voice that was such a pure musical instrument, that she made Peter-Paul-and-Mary sound ordinary. Fast forward about 50 years. I won a set of tickets to a live Joan Baez concert in the opera house at Wilmington Delaware. Two tickets cost about the same as my take-home pay for one week. Waiting to be admitted, I heard someone say "Look at all the grey-hairs. Everybody here as at least as old as she it." Maybe. But it was great. David Bromberg sat in late in the performance. It was wonderful. But she very much was a mature artist. Her voice was deeper, richer. She projected with power and deep musicality.
But this cd is from way back when. Just a folk singer.. But her high register shimmered and rang like a pure silver bell. The "new generation', my grandchildren, need to hear it and so do you. If you heard it when it was new, you need hear it again and remember when we believed concerts were better when the audience participated. We all thought we could make the world a better place and we knew we were gonna do it. "Thy Kingdom Come, Hollowed Be Thy Name"

If you are a child of the 60's, you will enjoy the music of Joan Baez. I love her music.

Here she is at the beginning. Just honest folk-singing. Can't get these tracks anywhere else.
