The Legendary Entertainment CEO explains the conditions that need to be met for Dune: Part 3 to happen. Dune: Part Two released in theaters on March 1, following up on Denis Villeneuve’s 2021 adaptation of Frank Herbert’s Dune. So far, Dune: Part Two has received rave reviews and has started off strong at the box office during its opening weekend.

Dune: Part Two grossed $81.5 million at the domestic box office during its opening weekend, nearly doubling the first film.

Per CNBC, Legendary Entertainment CEO Josh Grode addresses Dune: Part 3's chances. Grode offered an optimistic response to Dune: Part 3’s prospects, saying he doesn’t “see why not.” However, this optimism is contingent upon two things: the alignment of all “creative stakeholders” and Villeneuve’s ability to “get the script right.” Check out the full quote from Grode below:

We have to have all creative stakeholders aligned and support the vision.

I think everybody is very excited and really enjoying this moment and if Denis [Villeneuve] gets the script right and he feels that he can deliver another experience on par with what we’ve just completed then I don’t see why not.

Unlike the case of 2021’s Dune, Dune: Part Two ends having already told a fairly complete story, resolving some of the major plotlines. This is largely due to Dune: Part One cutting off halfway through the story of Herbert’s original novel, leaving off just at the part where Paul and Jessica meet up with Chani and the rest of the Fremen. If Dune: Part 3 were to be made, it would likely adapt at least part of the second novel in the Dune series, Dune: Messiah.

Chani's decision to leave at the end of Dune: Part Two was shrouded in mystery, and it has massive implications for the future of the story.

Even though Dune: Part Two has more finality than the first Dune, there are still several threads in the sequel that seem to demand a follow-up. One such element is the introduction of Alia Atreides, who is the pre-born child of Lady Jessica and the deceased Leto Atreides. Villeneuve and his team brought in actress Anya Taylor-Joy to play Alia, suggesting that she will have a larger role in the franchise.
