ON RECORD

Michael Bloomfield pioneered the new sound of blues-rock in recordings with the Butterfield Blues Band, with his own  horn band, the Electric Flag, and with Al Kooper's "Super Session" dates. But he also participated in numerous other sessions. Here is a detailed listing of many of those releases.

BLOOMFIELD BOX SET

From His Head to His Heart
to His Hands

Michael Bloomfield Box Set

Sony Legacy

Thanks to the determination of Al Kooper and a committed crew of able collaborators, the long-awaited Michael Bloomfield box set is a reality. Released in 2014, the set consists of three music CDs, a 60-minute DVD biography and an informative booklet. The music discs cover three phases of Michael Bloomfield's seventeen-year career and are titled "Roots," "Jams" and "Last Licks."

The "Roots" CD contains unreleased performances from Bloomfield's demo session for producer John Hammond, early recordings by his first band The Group, selections from the two Butterfield albums that featured Michael, and a sampling of Electric Flag tunes. Bloomfield fans will want the two previously unavailable Flag performances, recorded live in concret, as well as the excerpts from Michael's audition for Columbia.

The second CD, "Jams," provides an excellent overview of the "Super Session" dates, both in the studio and in concert. With one exception, all the tunes have been previously released and will be familiar to most Bloomfield enthusiasts. Kooper has edited several of the selections, shortening them and, in one instance, combining different takes to form a single "improved" version. But the majority of the tunes just are as they were when first released.

"Last Licks," the set's third music CD, is comprised of largely of live performances, most notably from one epic concert at McCabe's Music Shop in Santa Monica from 1977. It also contains selections from Bloomfield's Fillmore West "jam" dates and a single tune from Janis Joplin's "Kozmic Blues" album that features Bloomfield's slide guitar. Dylan fans will want to hear "The Groom's Still Waiting at the Altar," a rare live performance from 1980 that has Bloomfield sitting in just months before his death in February 1981.

Filmmaker Bob Sarles' "Sweet Blues" is an engaging overview of Michael Bloomfield's life and music, and includes interviews with many 1960s stars, including Bill Graham, B.B. King, Country Joe McDonald, Barry Melton, Charlie Musselwhite, Al Kooper and Barry Goldberg. There are also recollections from Michael's late mother, Dottie, and his brother, Allen.

The booklet that accompanies the set contains detailed discographical information, commentary from producer Al Kooper and an insightful essay on Bloomfield and his music from music writer Michael Simmons. Overall, the Bloomfield box set is a satisfying musical and visual experience, a handsome addition to any '60s blues and rock collection. It's also a long-overdue confirmation of Michael Bloomfield's contribution to American popular culture.
