Iconic Claremont musician David Lindley dead at 78
He was known for his startling, wide-screen musicality, was conversant on dozens of stringed instruments, and was one of the progenitors of world music. From his distinctive lap steel work on Jackson Browne’s early records, to his own explorations of the music of Turkey, Madagascar, Jamaica, and Greece — to name but a few musical cultures he studied and mastered — Lindley has influenced countless musicians and songwriters around the world for more than five decades.

David Lindley, a multitalented guitarist who was a fixture in Los Angeles recording studios during the 1970s and ’80s, died on Friday
After founding the psychedelic folk-rock group Kaleidoscope in 1966, Lindley supported many of the biggest stars of the era, establishing himself as a sought-after session musician through his work with Jackson Browne. After playing a prominent part on Browne’s "For Everyman" (1973) and "Late for the Sky" (1974), Lindley came to the forefront on 1977’s multiplatinum "Running on Empty," playing an indelible lap steel solo on the album’s title track and sharing lead vocals on the hit cover version of Maurice Williams’ "Stay."

Lindley's guitar and fiddle skills made him a go-to collaborator for Jackson Browne, Dolly Parton, Bob Dylan and others
Mitchell Peters
Although fans most associated him with the slide guitar, Lindley had little interest in meeting those expectations of what instrument he should be playing. In the 2005 ToneQuest interview, he said that he was playing slide guitar for the Blind Boys of Alabama at the time, and would bring it out for sessions, but when he went out to do his own shows, his interests had moved on elsewhere, to more exotic instruments.

The respect David Lindley commanded as a player's player has echoed through the guitar world with the news of his passing yesterday (3 March) at the age of 78. Although known most for his work with Jackson Browne, Lindley's musical legacy goes wider and deeper.

Deeply saddened to hear of the passing of David Lindley. One of the most talented musicians there has ever been. David could play pretty much any instrument you put in front of him with incredible versatility and expression. He was truly a musician’s musician and has been admired with awe and respect for such a long time now.

His style was so vocalesque and his sense of melody was a deep well. I think of some of those Jackson Browne songs with David that we all heard on the radio in the seventies where his solos became part of the song to the point where even non-musicians could hum along. David leaves behind a beautiful trove of music for music lovers to enjoy for centuries to come

Affectionately known as Mr. Dave, he was mine and many others’ all-time favourite - a musician’s musician who played with absolutely everyone including Bonnie Raitt. Many remember his sensitive playing back in the day, on those heart wrenching Jackson Browne albums and of course his longtime partnership with Ry Cooder was much loved, where together, they mined a rich seam of music from around the world.
