The first systematic exposition of all the central topics in the philosophy of logic, Susan Haack's book has established an international reputation (translated into five languages) for its accessibility, clarity, conciseness, orderliness, and range as well as for its thorough scholarship and careful analyses. Haack discusses the scope and purpose of logic, validity, truth-functions, quantification and ontology, names, descriptions, truth, truth-bearers, the set-theoretical and semantic paradoxes, and modality. She also explores the motivations for a whole range of nonclassical systems of logic, including many-valued logics, fuzzy logic, modal and tense logics, and relevance logics.

I highly recommend Philosophy of Logics to all who are familiar with at least first order predicate logic and wish to improve their understanding of logic. In addition to addressing fundamentals such as validity, sentence connectives, quantification, names and theories of truth it also illustrates extensions and restrictions of the 2-value propositional and first order predicate logic.

Philosophy of logic . . . well, a discipline which really must be learned at the feet of a master. But for us ordinary folk who have to get through logic courses, Haack's book, despite the odd title, is a masterpiece of lucidity, simplicity, and comprehensiveness, in a field where virtually all other entrees read like "greek" for the greekless, or . . . well, logic for the ???

The physical book was in good condition, but had a strong musty odor.

Haack does a decent job of introducing the important aspects of the philosophy of logic and introduces some intriguing theories of her own, but her style is dry and not easy to approach, even for a philosophical text.

If you just heard something about logic and is looking for something interesting to read there may be easier and funnier books. But, if you have some knowledge of elementary formal logic and are motivated to take some time to learn about the philosophy of logic, this is a very rewarding book - it's real modern analytic philosophy at its best.

5.0 out of 5 stars Old but still good
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 31, 2009
If you're familiar with classical formal logic and you're doing a course in philosophical logic (or you just want to understand it better) Haack's is definitely the best book to buy. In comparison Grayling's similar introduction is waffly and doesn't establish as clearly as Haack does what logic is and why we should care. Haack approaches philosophical problems related to logic from a thoroughly un-metaphysical point of view, which could potentially be a criticism as many courses in philosophical logic view logical investigations as a valid way of doing metaphysics (e.g. questions of the existence of propositions). Haack sees the discipline as analogous to 'philosophy of mathematics' but don't be fooled by the title, all of the key issues in a philosophical logic course are here, and in most cases are put in a more illuminating context than elsewhere.

Haack's book leaves you with a clear picture of the relationship between formal logic and philosophy, which is often lacking in other introductions to philosophical logic. As the previous reviewer said this is a paradigm text book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Clear, Comprehensive and Fascinating

This is a very clearly written and comprehensive survey of the whole field of logics. ( Note the plural : the book covers not only classical logic, but also modal logic and non-classical logics. ) I found it fascinating, but I have to say that I'm very much in sympathy with the later Wittgenstein in finding the legacy of Frege and Russell to be a disaster, leading directly to today's world where everything is run by algorithms, leaving no room for nuance and discretion. Early on in the book the author remarks that "some of the knobs and bumps in the English language are important". Exactly so. I fail to see how "There is an x which socratises and whatever socratises took poison" is an improvement over "Socrates took poison". Let's get back to the rough ground, as Wittgenstein said.
