The last 40 minutes or so are amazing. I wont give any spoilers.
The monster designs are absolutely fantastic, the fights that involve monsters and human war machines are by far my favorite part of the movie. Every monster was done justice by the people on the design team.
The fan service is 100% on point. There are small call backs all throughout the film make it feel like the writers care about the franchise. None of them felt forced and it really did add a lot to the hype/ nostalgia.
And now unfortunately the bad... this section is going to be a lot longer than I would like it to be. I would like to start by saying I have been watching Godzilla movies since I was born. I absolutely love the franchise, I have gone to every american released film in theaters at least once. There are only 2 of the films missing from my DVD/ Bluray library. I really does pain me to call out the bad parts of this movie, because they are REALLY BAD. (almost Godzillas Revenge levels of bad)
This will have VERY small spoilers relevant only to the setting of a single scene, and a plot point that is revealed within the first 10 minutes of the movie. It should not ruin the movie for you... you have been warned.
starting from the least offensive and moving up to the worst thing...
<Very small point here, wouldn't ruin anything on its own>
Not Atlantis that is accessible via underwater water worm holes. Why is this here? Just make the setting the bottom of the ocean, its unnecessary to bring a ancient advanced civilization into the series.
<Moderately small point... its really dumb. The reason Im mentioning it here is because it is so unnecessary... 4 more bit part actors could have fixed this>
The commander lady is an idiot. She cant just give orders, she needs to lead from the front, even when its super dangerous and dumb to do so. And it isnt in just one dumb way she is risking her life. Ground team deploying into a firefight? Shes on the ground. Someone needs an air evac? Shell pilot the aircraft into a very hot LZ.
<This is something that really concerns me about the franchise...>
It feels like they are trying to turn it into avengers. Look at the boxes cover art... that isnt the super x above Godzilla like I was hoping, its a flying aircraft carrier. Monarch is trying super hard to be shield. They are separate from the military, but have funding that would put the us armed forces to shame. Also humor and stuff... we already have avengers, I would like a pure Godzilla movie.
<Okay, this is a more minor things again, but it bothers me>
The flying aircraft carrier is keeping up with fighter jets... ya cool, ill buy that. Then its launch bays open up and it starts dropping osprey prop planes... The physics would end with a very dead flight team but okay.
<This part really does bother me>
Humor. Just why. I watched the 2014 Godzilla before this to get hyped up and in the mood. The tone is totally different. They shoe horn in so much humor, and almost none of the jokes land... and the few that do dont even work because of all the bad ones around them. "That monster is nice to that monster, that means they want sex, and thats gross" is a poorly paraphrased version of a joke they actually make in the movie. That white haired scientist is the worst character in the movie because he to entirely bad comic relief. Why hasn't there been a straight movie made since 2017? You dont need jokes to have a good movie.
<Second biggest problem with the movie right here...>
The main character. Hes not a likable person. He feels like an antihero... but his isnt. Hes depressing. He is very poorly developed. They try to show him being heroic to make him likable, but he breaks something big and expensive to save someone who is somewhere they shouldn't be... them needing saving from their position makes them total idiots (Happens in a hanger bay, you'll know what I mean) There where 2 characters I liked in this movie. Dr. Serizawa, who actually received some development in the first american film, and the scientist who likes Mothera, and has a twin sister... and every generation of her family has twin girls.... (Like I said, it has great fan service)
<And the very worst part>
The mcguffin of this movie detracts from all of the monsters being cool. It takes all of the monsters agency away, AND is used in ways that doesnt make sense using the in world logic. It comse out in the first 10 minutes or so, so no big spoiler here, its a magic laptop that makes sounds that can control kaiju. You have a monster thats angry? Play this mp3 file at it and it will calm right down! Connect the laptop to a big speaker and you can controll every monster on the entire planet with the sound, without blowing your eardrums some how... There are so many ways they could have unleashed the monsters. Why would they settle on "If you play a sound they do what you want"? When I tell my dog to sit he sits, I thought Rodan had more self determination than my crotch sniffing poodle.
This movie is a mixed bag for me. This movie has the highest highs... but it comes with the lowest lows. If the average movie gets 3 stars, I would give this 2.5. Give it a chance and let the studio know they should keep building on the franchise, but they need to do better.
