Don't be so rigid. Killing can be another way to save someone. Never forget that.
~ Gran Torino's advice to Izuku Midoriya about killing Tomura Shigaraki

Sorahiko Torino, better known by his hero name; Gran Torino is a major supporting character in the manga/anime series My Hero Academia. He is a semi-retired Pro Hero, as well as the former teacher and mentor of the Symbol of Peace, All Might.

He is voiced by Kenichi Ogata and Masamichi Kitada as a child in the Japanese version of the anime, and by Charlie Campbell in the English version.

Appearance[]

Gran Torino is a very short, elderly man with a scrawny posture and visible wrinkles. He possesses grey, spiky hair, a trimmed beard, yellow eyes along with a fair complexion. His hero costume consists of a full body, monochrome suit with a yellow cape, black mask and yellow boots with holes in the soles that allow him to use his Quirk.

In his younger days, Gran Torino was much taller and had a well-built physique while keeping his same hero costume.

Personality[]

At first, Gran Torino appeared to have the character of a senile old man; being forgetful and shaky, as well as asking for food and not seeming to remember Midoriya's name, calling him Toshinori as well as being unable to hear what he says.

However, this proved to be nothing more than an act Gran Torino put on in order to test (and to a point, mess with) his new pupil. In reality, Gran Torino is a highly intelligent man with an extremely sharp wit and broad perception. He proved to be exceptional in training and teaching Midoriya on how to improve One For All, as well as having the boy's personality figured from watching the U.A. Sports Festival on TV.

As a teacher, he does show to be quite strict and remarked having put All Might through intense physical training, which resulted in the latter being nervous and afraid of mentioning him to the point where his legs were trembling. Regardless, Gran Torino is still willing to praise his students on their successes when they earn it, such as praising Midoriya's progress and technique.

With villains, Gran Torino is straight-forward in bringing them in, as shown when he knocked Dabi out for resisting his capture and saying that it was in his best interest to cooperate with them. At the same time, his opinion on Tomura Shigaraki wasn't visibly changed when revealed that he was Nana Shimura's grandson, as he urged All Might that Tomura was still a villain regardless and must be treated as such.

Powers & Abilities[]

Quirk[]

Jet: Gran Torino's Quirk allows him to unleash high-pressure air from the soles of his feet, for which he wears custom shoes with holes, allowing him to manoeuvre and dash around at incredibly high speeds. This air is fuelled by the oxygen he breathes in however, meaning that he cannot fly consecutively.

Despite his old age and retirement, Gran Torino is an extremely powerful Pro Hero, being the one who taught All Might how to fight and use his Quirk. He was able to effortlessly knock out multiple members of the League of Villains and powerful enough to defeat a low-tier Nomu. He also managed to arrest Kurogiri while fighting off the immensely powerful Gigantomachia.

Trivia[]

  • His name is likely a reference to the Clint Eastwood film of the same name.
  • His favourite food is taiyaki.
  • He enjoys oversleeping.
  • Gran Torino's character was initially based off Yoda, while his hero costume was inspired by Mega Man.
