Welcome back everyone!
Different release pattern is kinda crazy, right? Especially with two episodes! For now we'll remain somewhat similar with our normal workings. Please remember that this is an unsynchronised watch (i.e. people hitting play at slightly different times) and it's a skippable VOD, spoilers later in the episode may be present.
As per a suggestion somewhere, I've added a BBC One live thread to the roster for those who will be watching live as part of that, we'll see how that goes.
Feedback welcome as usual.
Enjoy the episodes!
"You get this Ruby Sunday, a Tardis key."
'Your chances of being stranded on a parallel world, becoming a cyberman, being displaced in time by a weeping angel, getting your memories erased or just burning out, and getting ptsd have now increased dramatically!"
To be fair, she sealed her own fate the moment she asked the Doctor “is it safe?”. Never ask the Doctor if it’s safe.
She’s giving me possible betrayal vibes like Clara in Series 8.
oh absolutely. she is going to see her parents.
NGL...that key really should come with an epic health and safety warning in caps, red, underlined and bold 🤣
The Rani mentioned ❗❗
I wonder if BBC settled the rights dispute👀
There is a rights dispute over the Rani?
The creators of the Rani passed away and apparently it’s not clear who’s in control of the rights for the Character
If a writer worked for the BBC, then they owned any characters/monsters they created.
If they were a freelance writer, they owned their characters.
This is why most companions are fine, except K9 and Nyssa (and why K9 got a non-BBC series and why Nyssa had to leave the show).
This is why Dalek episodes sometimes don't get shown/streamed and why there was discussion of the Daleks not appearing in the return. And why "An Unearthly Child" is removed from some streaming services.
It's why there are a lot of spin-offs that include monsters and characters from Doctor Who and the BBC can't do anything about them.
Both Rani stories were written by Pip (1929 - 2020) and Jane (1924 - 2014) Baker. They were a married couple, but had no children. Unless Jane specified someone to get residual rights, her half went to Pip. His estate is not listed as unclaimed, so someone has the rights. But it seems no one is sure who.
A less dispute and more its not clear who has them.
It was nice her mentioned.
I was cackling because it’s definitely a red herring but it’ll send fans into a tizzy
I love it when shows toy with the fanbase
Oh dear god...they're doing Baby Geniuses.
RTD just diving head first into the camp isn't he?
He does love camp
My favourite episode of old Doctor Who is Tom Baker fighting bubble wrap spray painted green.
Space Babies is why i love Doctor Who!.
"Turn right!"
Is there no respect for the lore anymore!
But then they promptly turned left.
my exact thoughts
For a second I thought they were going to reveal the monster was made of "something" that's used in the process of making babies
Honestly what they did is only slightly less disgusting
Like the eye gunk in Sleep No More lol
I literally though it was going to reveal halfway through that this is a sequel to Sleep No More 😭
That would have been something 😭. The camera feeds had me thinking that for a minute lol
This isn't Torchwood, you know!
Thought that as well and then immediately caught on to what just happened to Ruby.
Never have I had a more WTF moment
I thought it would just be an ugly human
i was literally screaming “cum!” at my tv 😭
Do you do that during other shows?
I thought that as well.
Def stands out to me that The Doctor didn't mention The Master when he was listing other Time Lords to Ruby. Their next meeting is gonna be very sour methinks
Yeah it’s kinda intriguing, he might also still be a bit weirded out by the whole Master being turned into a tooth thing
It feels like an intentional choice to me. Like, The Doctor just doesn't even consider The Master when mentioning his people. I think, next time those two meet, we'll see the most antagonistic dynamic they've shared.
Love it!
Great continuity spotting! 👍🏻
Was that baby packing a knife 🤣🤣🤣 Was about to shive the boogeyman
"Next time you come here, you come heavy or don't come at all!"
"That a threat?!"
"You want to find out?!"
The knife looked cardboard to me
Yea it was like a kids wooden/toy sword. Didn't stop my surprise when it dropped to the ground lol
Loving the chemistry between the Doctor and Ruby
I have no idea what the fuck is going on in this episode though
The queer found family vibe is so cozy
“Tell your mum not to slap me!” Jackie has left her mark I see.
At this point whos mother hasnt slapped the doctor?
Amy's.
She was non-existent for most of Amy’s life!
Her daughter did, though
Thank god they still have USB-C in the future! Can't believe it lasted that long.
Well... When you standardise something and it just works, why do change the design?... Tbf this basically could be a statement to describe like 80% of inventions.
That has to be the most ridiculous fart joke I’ve ever seen.
From the same writer as the Slitheen.
Yeah felt a bit like "oh you didn't like the fart jokes? Well..."
Only Russell T Davies could think of the potential antagonist being like 500 babies in pushchairs calling the Doctor daddy
If I saw this Doctor irl I would also be calling him daddy
Costuming is killing it!
Ncuti is a very attractive man lol
Respectfully, the man is absolutely serving in both looks and cake
RTD: I would like the Doctor to be the last of the time lords.
Everyone since RTD : well we brought Gallifrey back. He isn’t the last one. There is hope. H-
RDT : I SAID LAST OF THE TIME LORDS.
To be fair it was Chibnall who genocided the Time Lords again
Yeah but it was quite funny how it mimicked the first season.
I do like how 15 is less hurting about it, he’s had time to heal and he’s just pushing forward.
I love 15 already, he is so compassionate.
he's so much more open. I know it's kinda just a way to get new audiences up to speed with rapid exposition, but it's obvious that the healing that 14 did has resulted in 15 being much more open with who he is. instead of the companion being dripfed little facts about the doctor over their first season, the doctor tells ruby almost everything immediately. it's so refreshing.
Hated that Chibnall did that.
It was an unnecessary addition to a twist that already wasn't good
No kidding. They went through all that to bring back Gallifrey only to have it destroyed later on.
I know this is how Chibnall’s left it after S12, but god I just want to move away from this. Let the Time Lords come back properly and move forward.
With the advent of incorporating former companions (which I guess technically was RTD who started it with Sarah Jane) , I'd certainly be open to at least a middle ground of getting the Dr's granddaughter back. It would certainly be an interesting and potentially very fun dynamic.
The thing that has always bothered me with Chibnall’s genocide of the Time Lords by the Master is how did that fucking work? One Renegade against the remaining population. How did that work? Everyone there is dead? How? Especially against an alien race that can go anywhere, any when and hide themselves with chameleon arches.
Lazy goddamn writing there.
This is Chibnall all over.
I swear to god Russel if you bring The Time Lords and Gallifrey back for a season finale I might just lose it. Truth be told I don't even really wanna see The Master back for a while, maybe the Rhani but I'm worried she'd be too similar to Missy, but I just feel The Master is just so played out at this point that I have no idea how you'd make them interesting.
And if The Master does come back please for the love of God don't give them yet another Cyber-Army. Why did The Master having an Army of Cybermen become a thing for a while?
Bring back Romana. The rest can rot.
My one comment is that I had wished he had silently under is breath added “again”. “I am the last of the time lords… again.” It would have not only been a good bridge from the og New Who but adds more of a tragic element. For a time he wasn’t the last of the time lords, but now he must suffer that title again not from the direct guilt of what he had done, but with the survival guilt of being unable to stop the master.
If the Doctor scans you and there's a dramatic motif/ foreshadowing run girl!
We’re really speed running RTD-isms. Last of the Time Lords, hacked phone, TARDIS key, sorry companion I can’t address your backstory WINK.
The whole TARDIS translator, hacked phone, mentioning the phone bill was almost exactly the same sequence as 1x02 except Rose’s reaction seemed a lot more genuine honestly.
