Emilia soon finds the body of her beloved twin...desecrated beyond belief. Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 8 Up-Emilia and Vittoria are twin witches living among humans. They possess a power that they don't speak of to anyone and learn early that there are seven demon princes, four of whom should be feared: Wrath, Greed, Envy, and Pride. These demons search for souls to steal for the devil. One evening Vittoria goes missing and Emilia discovers that she has been murdered. Emilia seeks revenge and commits to finding the murderer using all of her resources, regardless of the cost. While seeking vengeance she meets Wrath, who claims to be on her side and is also looking for a serial murderer. She must learn who to trust using magic and her wits while not being discovered as a witch. The interactions among the characters build a tale of suspicion and mystery. Maniscalco's writing is graceful and leaves plenty of anticipation for the next book in the series. Taking place in Sicily, Italy, the twins and family are Sicilians-some of whom possess magic and some who do not. VERDICT Fantasy, magic, devils, a murder mystery, shapeshifters, and the beginning of a series will make this book a new favorite for many.-Karen Alexander, Lake Fenton H.S., Linden, MIα(c) Copyright 2011. Wow, this book was certainly amazing.
"There are victors and victims. Decide who you want to be. Or the choice will be made for you, witch. And I doubt you’ll like it."Storyline/Plot: The plot was really good. I think that a string of witch murders really reigns you in, and then the idea of the Seven Deadly Sins being involved is (in my experience) very unique, and I love the idea of it. I do kind of wish the Seven Deadly Sins played a bigger role than what they traditionally are, but they still filled the role really well. There was a clear plot that was followed really well and written even better. I do wish there were some more action-packed scenes, and more spells, because you know, a witch, but maybe that's something book 2 will give me. The cliffhanger was also pretty insane and made me glad by 2nd book preorder came on time, although the signs pointed to it, for some reason, I just did not read into that foreshadowing, and I am here for it... kinda. (view spoiler) Although it took me quite some time to read, I was definitely in a bit of a slump after finishing the 4th Savage Lands book, and a rough week of work meant it took me longer to finish, but I still think the length was perfect for the story."Love is the most powerful magic. Above all else, remember that."Romance: I wouldn't classify this story as a romance by any means. I think there's some angst, but it's clear there is no resolve or continuation of that, at least in this book. I was hoping for some action between Emilia and Wrath, and there was definitely some banter, but it didn't amount to much. Although there is a lack of romance in this story, it's not taking away from the book because it wasn't meant to be a romance story."One day you'll call me Death. For now, Wrath will do."Characters: I do love me these characters. I think for the most part the Seven Deadly Sin characters are portrayed pretty well, but I do wish there was more action based on their Sin, for some of them. I also love Emilia, I love that she's clearly powerful and strong, but she's not portrayed as this big and powerful, fighter MC that a lot of other books do to their female leads. Her character development in the grief of her sister's passing, and her fight for vengeance, is incredibly written. I wish that we had some more time to find out what Vittoria was like because she gets described as certain things after she passed that we didn't get to read as her personality trait, so it felt like a slight disconnect.World-Building: I think the world-building was good. I was confused in regards to placement at times, but in terms of descriptions, it was really well written. There wasn't a point where I felt overwhelmed, or couldn't imagine a place that was being described."You always have the power of choice, even when those choices seem limited. Never forget that."Overall, this is definitely a great book, but there are a couple of things I feel like we're lacking in order to get it to that 5-star review, but I would reread this book, and likely will when the 3rd book comes out. It's a great Spooktober read, and I am excited to get to the 2nd book. There is a lot of hype behind this book, and don't get me wrong it is a fantastic book that I would definitely recommend to others to read, but in my opinion, there are other books I would hype up more than I would this book.

"A twig was a just a bit of broken wood until it had been sharpened into a spear.Grief carved me in half. And fury honed the pieces into a weapon"

5 FREAKING FAT STARS

First off kerri- how could you stop there?? that should be the eighth sin lol

Aside from having a stunning cover, my first thought after starting the book is that it has a great many blends of my favorite genres and traits to quench my fantasy loving soul's thirst- Historical fiction, set in Italy, murder mystery, broody hero with MANNERS(yes I put that in all caps because the seems to be a rarity these days in books ;) ), forbidden romance, atmospheric ambiance with all the fantastical elements to captivate you with the perfect amount of spook but not outright scare you and last but not least a reserved MC lead that learns to kick ass as she goes

"Emilia Maria di Carlo didn't do danger. My sister was the adventurous one- I was satisfied with safe, clean and fun.Give me a steamy romance novel with forbidden love and impossible odds"

I loved Emilia ever since I read these lines, she is definitely my kind of girl, she is level headed, smart and extremely sassy and gives two squats if she had to fight the devil or the God for justice. When her beloved twin is brutally murdered, she ventures into an unexpected path with dangerous secrets and 6 foot 2 inch calamities, she keeps surprising herself at her own strength that she could draw when she believes someone she loves is in danger. I am not usually a huge fan of single POV's or internal dialogues but I loved Emilia's witty brains and its sassy comeback's, I have so many favorite lines from her.

I wished we had more of Wrath but I have a feeling we will see a heck lot of him in the upcoming books, he is broody with a hard shell exterior but you couldn't help but notice his good internal aspect peeking through often. I was sold when I read that there is a romance angle between a demon and a witch but what I didn't expect is a romance that is a chef's kiss- don't get me wrong because this doesn't mean there is a lot of steam but there is lot of rationale to it which I always prefer over meaningless steam.

Now that we talked about characters lets talk about the plot- Man Oh Man! did Kerri knock it out of the park with the masterful intrigue she weaved into the this fantastical mystery? I would say a 100% yes- she is exceptionally good at deflecting the reader from seeing what is right before their eyes, that being said I did see bits of it coming but the bread crumbs that she left leading to unravel the mystery is excellently executed, however I have 1 million questions and I wanted to be like Emilia and write all of them down, the gothic element of the book adds perfect balance to its demure historic fiction premise

Its a perfect book for the spooky season to pick up but I can't make any promises that by the end of it that you won't be willing to sell your soul to the devil or make deals with demons (pun intended) for the next book or for the answers you might need ;)

This was one of the oldest and most wanted books on my TBR. Its also one of those that made it straight to that list as soon as the first informations were shared by the author.

It has:
One of my favorites titles
One of my favorite covers
Wonderful map
Original plot
The bad boy that we love

As soon as I read that the book was about the seven demon princes of hell, where each represents a mortal sin, I thought: I NEED IT!

The story happens in Palermo and follows Emília, that belongs to one of the 12 witch families living in Sicily.
When her twin sister, Vittoria, is murdered, Emília's determined to find out who's the murder. Her determination makes her summon a demon of lower level to get some informations. But instead, she summons Wrath, the Prince of House Wrath. One of the seven Wicked.

Tied by a spell and by their own interests, Wrath and Emília join forces to discover who's killing the witches and removing their hearts.

The story is full of mysteries and conspiracies, what makes us create a lot of theories while reading and makes us not want to put the book down until we discover everything.

Of course I loved Wrath!!! 😏❤️

Emília's personality made me roll my eyes a few times. Don't know if it's related with her character development.
(For a few moments I thought I would end the book an expert in Italian cuisine. Nothing against, but I was more interested in knowing more about the Malvagi and find out who's the killer than in how she cooked pasta with pesto and cannellonis. 😅)

Loved the little we get to know about the other princes and their story with the witches.
And loved how Kerri developed each Prince around his sin of choice

Recommend. ❤️

I have heard mixed things about this book/this trilogy and heard some people saying that the second book gets better than the first one... but... listen me here: 𝐈 𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐨𝐮𝐬𝐥𝐲 𝐥𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐛𝐨𝐨𝐤. I am going to read the second one right after and if it is really better than the first one... wow then, it's gonna be one of my favorite series ever.

Mixing witches with demons... this is my paradise! I love a good book of witches, and a good book of demons and loved everything about this story, the plot, the characters, the lore... the map in the book (at least in my edition) with the 7 houses of hell imprinted completely changes the game! It's so amazing, the explanations, the characters' development, the relationships, the story and history... EVERYTHING, I admit I may or may not be a bit obsessed with this at the moment.

In the beginning I was afraid I was not going to like Emily, the main character/main witch of the story, but I ended up liking her so much... and Wrath is absolutely the best! All hail, this amazing prince of Hell!

One thing that I was expecting to be a little tiny bit better was the 𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐞 𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭. And that's the reason I didn't give the book more than 5 as a classification, cause 5.5 stars is the maximum I give any book, and I didn't do it here... because the suspense in the book and the person who killed Vittoria (𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐢𝐬 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐚 𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐢𝐥𝐞𝐫, 𝐢𝐭'𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐲𝐧𝐨𝐩𝐬𝐢𝐬, 𝐈 𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐜𝐤𝐞𝐝) was not a surprise for me, I knew it since the beginning... which is a shame.

Overall I am pretty excited to get into the second book but really sad because after I finish "Kingdom of the Cursed" I will have to wait until September to know the rest of the story.

JUST GO READ THIS BOOK. Really amazing... really loved it!

I've never read any book by this author before, and I am in love with her type of writing now! Completely a fan and I'm totally going to buy all her books.

Maybe my expectations were too high because I heard so many good things about this book. But while I enjoyed reading it, I didn’t love it. Now I know this is just the first book, but a bit more answers would have been nice. Overall not much was resolved. That being said the story was interesting enough so I do want to know what happens next.
