Strong Start, Fast Fade
I've enjoyed quite a few tracks from Tech N9ne throughout my life but I had never listened to a full album from the self-made speed rapper.

This album starts off extremely well with "Just Die?" and "Suckseed" both being bangers and setting the album off well.

It's followed up with "Outdone" which continues the high energy feel and builds your hope for a great album.

Shortly after you get some meddling songs in "Look What I Did" feat Flatbush Zombies & Jehry Robinson followed by "Yeah No!" feat. Mackenzie Nicole. Both songs are decent, and aren't bad by any marker, just a drop from the energy and bombast of the first few tracks.

Then the album dives hard with "Dr.Sebagh" feat. Landxn Fyre. The verse is okay but nothing new and the chorus is just mind numbingly bad that it doesn't set a great precedent as we are 6 tracks in.

The next notable track to me comes six tracks later at "Angel Baby" feat. Nave Monjo. It's a song about Tech's childhood nickname from his mom and how it's applied throughout his life and is both a good story song and shows more emotional depth for the rapper.

The rest of the album is just unbearably bad choruses and hooks and mediocre to mundane rapping.

Notable Tracks: "Suckseed" feat. Krizz Kaliko & King Iso, "Outdone", "Angel Baby" feat. Nave Monjo

I was really hoping legendary rapper Tech N9ne would give us a string of consistently good records after his 2019 release N9NA was twice as good as the horrible 2018 one Planet. He’s said that he’s only going to be going at it for a few more years, and as the guy has built such an expansive independent music empire it will be disappointing if he doesn’t go out on a high note. Unfortunately though, we’re dipping back into the quality we got with Planet on this new one. Coming out with at least one album a year since 2006 seems like it’s really run Tech’s creative juices low at this point, as Enterfear is quite a mixed bag with at least one mediocre or bad song for each one that lives up to Tech’s usual quality.

Every single Tech N9ne album to date has had highlights that I’ve really enjoyed, even Planet which was easily my least favorite of his projects up until this point. On here, those highlights are few and far between. Plus, when the record picks up steam it still doesn’t really compare to the best material I’ve heard from the guy. This really just feels a stagnant retread of an album that only has a little handful of tracks strong enough to make me want to revisit them. Outdone is a pretty strong cut in comparison to the rest of the record, as when the instrumental drops it really hits hard and Tech’s rapping on this cut is far above his lackluster performance on the rest of it. However, it takes ages before the instrumental actually catches and it could have been so much more amazing if it had the second half’s energy in the first half. Look What I Did has the opposite problem, as the cut is absolutely awesome until Meechy Darko’s awkward, non-fitting verse interrupts the momentum. It’s definitely still a decent song, but the lyrics at the start of his verse are so hilariously awful that even when he picks up his slack towards the end it’s already enough. I can’t take a rapper seriously when he says “I'm a big boy, she suck me up and rub my six pack” in a gravelly, deep and dark tone.

Yeah No! is another one that’s pretty solid, focusing on Tech’s mean flow over a pretty alright beat, and Question Mark This! is a fairly standard Tech affair that gets the job done well enough. KC Smile is a fairly heartwarming song (albeit an average closer) & Phonk is another one that’s kind of just more of what I’d expect from the album, but once again these are a lot better than the low points on the record. Aside from that fraction of the record, everything else is either ruined by missed potential or just flat out bad. The two tracks with Landxn Fire, a 13 year old rapper, are okay I suppose. I don’t want to hate on the kid at all because he’s talented and it’s cool to see Tech bring him onto the record, but I’d be lying if I said I didn’t find his verses kind of cheesy. It’s no one's fault as he’s just a kid, but I still just couldn’t really get into what I was hearing. The couple of storytelling tracks on here are also two that I can understand why people would enjoy for sure, as Feel So Sad and Angel Baby have solid instrumentals and great pacing. However, I found the actual lyricism to just be far too heavy handed for me to really take seriously. Those four tracks aren’t the bottom of the barrel here though, just moments that I felt could have been much better but aren’t.

The two intro tracks are the first moments on the album that I really disliked, as they really do not do a good job of opening up the album whatsoever. The first of the two Just Die? is clearly the better of the two, but it’s such a flat and lifeless Tech song that finds him sounding like he’s going through the motions and ruining the mediocre performance he gives with melodramaticism. Suckceed is a genuinely horrible track. The name is such an unfunny euphemism that’s a reach at even being a pun in the first place, nevermind how much worse it gets when you realize Tech is saying his haters “suck seed”. These two were such a terrible starting point that they made me fail to enjoy the following decent tracks just by association at first. It’s the run from track 13 to track 18 that I really just was not into at all. On the Outside is a really bland filler track that’s made even worse by an annoying low pitched voice doing unnecessary ad-libs that break apart Tech’s flow. The hook on that one is pretty mediocre as well, making it a song that’s just below sliding by as filler.

Smell Good is the worst Tech N9ne song I’ve ever heard. This man made an entire song about he smells good. That’s it. He is literally just rapping about how women love the actual scent of his body. It is one of the cheesiest and most frustratingly weird Hip-Hop songs I’ve heard in a while. It’s possible he’s just joking around on this thing, but if it’s a joke song his delivery is so unbelievably poor that it’s impossible to even tell. If he’s not joking, he’s an idiot for releasing whatever this is. Stoli Doli is another one that has lyrics so cheesy and lame that it ruins an otherwise great instrumental. He’s just talking about brands of alcohol and how bartenders know what kind of alcohol he drinks. Maybe it’s just me being used to seeing typical bar regulars at the restaurant I work at, but the braggadocious elements of this track don’t work at all and the smooth R&B vocals just make it seem cheesier. For Ya Love has a guitar loop that is literally out of tune when those aggressively out of place chords are strummed, and the lyrics are so pathetically stupid. It’s just a melodramatic Emo Rap snoozefest complaining about how a girl ghosted the guy, yet it also brags about both Tech and featured artist Marley Young banging other chicks anyways. It’s stupid, backwards and a poorly written track that doesnt capitalize on the melodic Emo Rap scene well whatsoever.

I actually forgot about B.I.B. until I got to this part of the review, but that one is actually a pretty fantastically emotional song that deals with growing up in an abusive home. It hits really hard and it makes me feel pretty stupid for forgetting about it. This could easily be the best song on the album, so at least it’s here to break up that awful losing streak the album was on. Saw Somethin’ brings us right on back to where we were though. When this guy was talking about how he was searching for ghosts, I thought it was a cool metaphor where he was comparing maybe hunting for answers in life to ghost chasing. Nope, he was actually talking about chasing ghosts. The entire song is about how he wishes that he’d seen a ghost at some point in his life and how he felt like they were “hiding” from him. This song is so stupid. It’s not just that I don’t believe in or don’t care about paranormal stuff like this, because I don’t mind somebody believing in whatever they want. I do, however, find it really cheesy and frankly hilarious that there’s this huge melodramatic song about how Tech is sad that he never found a ghost. It sounds like a five year old kid complaining that he’s disappointed that his venture into the family attic didn’t turn into a Scooby Doo episode. Pretty awful track.

This whole record is just such a mismatched mess in so many ways. There are a good handful of tracks I was relatively into I guess, but I just wish Tech would take a little more time with his records and give us something more polished and complete before he retires. We only have so much more time with one of the most prolific and revered fast rappers to ever touch the microphone, and I really don’t want that to be wasted on lackluster tracks. Tech still has all the talent on the mic that he always had, and there are enough alright bars on this thing to prove that he can still write when he puts his mind to it. However, this thing just feels so rushed and unfinished that it sounds like it never had a chance at being good without way more time in the oven. I mean really, it’s just such a letdown to hear him failing on the quality control side of things so badly that he allowed Smell Good to ever be released. There are some decent songs on this thing, but there are just as many that should have been buried in the vault forever. Tech N9ne is a respected veteran in the Rap game for countless good reasons, but a lot of those good reasons just aren’t showing up on Enterfear. It’s got a couple highlights like every Tech record does, but it’s a mixed bag that’s far worse than the surprisingly solid N9NA from last year. - 5.6/10 (Best Songs - Outdone, Look What I Did ft. Flatbush Zombies & Jehry Robinson, B.I.B. ft. Krizz Kaliko)

An amazing album by Tech, with great story tracks, great lyrical tracks in general with some unique concepts (like Saw Somethin') & amazing features. Tech gives a lot of underrated & obscure artists a chance to shine with some YouTube rap features like Lex Bratcher & Scru Face Jean while also giving the stage to a kid (Landxn Fyre) who's actually really good. There are some filler tracks and most tracks with Krizz are sadly forgettable, but other than that amazing.

Tech takes a darker approach on his 22nd album
Tech N9ne is an MC from Kansas City, Missouri who really doesn’t need an introduction at this point. The man has put in an insane amount of work over the course of his nearly 3 decade career from starting up the most successful independent label in hip hop Strange Music to a lengthy discography including Anghellic, Absolute Power, Everready (The Religion), K.o.D. (King of Darkness) & Special Effects. The last we heard from Tech was just about a year ago with N9NA & with the 1 year anniversary of that coming up, he’s back with his 22nd album.

The album kicks off with “Just Die?”, where Tech takes aim to those saying it’s falling off over a rap metal beat. The next song “Suckseed” with King Iso sees the 2 telling everyone to suck their dicks over a rock/trap fusion while the track “Outdone” talks about going from rapping for the first time in 1985 to being co-signed by some of the greats & I love how layered the beat from 7 gets as it progresses. The song “Look What I Did” with the Flatbush ZOMBiES talks about making it in the industry over a cavernous trap beat while the track “Yeah No!” talks about being reclusive now over a dark instrumental.

The song “Dr. Sebagh” with Landxn Fyre sees the 2 showing off their skills over a spacious beat while the track “Question Mark This!” with Lex Bratcher sees the 2 talking about backstabbers over a druggy beat. The song “Snake & the Batman” is a short yet merciless flex over a slow yet suspenseful instrumental while the track “Feel So Sad!” talks about how he isn’t perfect over a dreary acoustic instrumental. The song “Leave It on the Flo!” talks about hooking up with 2 women over a sensual beat & an awkward Landxn verse in the middle while the track “Phonk” with Merkules & Scru Face Jean is a decent sequel with a soulful boom bap beat.

The song “Angel Baby” talks about all the times he’s survived death over a funereal instrumental while the track “On the Outside” talks about getting money over an upbeat instrumental. The song “Smell Good” with Krizz Kaliko sees the 2 getting flirtatious over a smooth instrumental while the track “Stoli Doli” continues the same themes over a more meditative beat.

The song “For Ya Love” talks about this woman holding a grudge over an intoxicating beat while the track “B.I.B. (But I’m Blessed)” sees Tech & Krizz talks about being grateful despite their shortcomings over a calming yet atmospheric beat. The song “Saw Somethin’” with Iso sees the 2 talking about the supernatural over a ghostly instrumental & then the closer “KC Smile” pays tribute to his hometown over a jazzy beat.

Tech has always been one of my favorite artists in all of hip hop & this just goes to show why. A couple of the features could’ve been better at points, but I really like how the album takes a much more darker approach than N9NA did.
