If you liked Jones' first novel, you'll like this one as well. If you like his more recent work (Mongrels; The Only Good Indians), you won't find those kinds of non-human characters in The Bird Is Gone. But the characters in this book are, well, not 100% recognizably "human" either: they are a blend of realism and symbolism. Jones is a great storyteller, and this book is history, plot-narrative, and cultural narrative, which makes for an educational read. The unique format of the book's structure aids in walking the reader through the present to emerge in the past and ride the wave of timelessness both real and imagined. You get Coyote stories, the Land O'Lakes maiden (which Land O'Lakes has now removed from the package of butter), basketball, kinship, and a decent mystery. To best sum up the attitude and the what's-going-to-happen-next of this book, I'll use Jones' own words on page 99:

The description for this by the seller states it was seemingly new and unread. The dust jacket clean and intact. First of all, it's a trade paper book, so there is no dustjacket. It still had a bookmarked in it from a hotel, so it did belong to someone. Aside from some clearly riffled pages, it is a clean used copy. From the description, I was anticipating a newer hardback. In a trade paper, it is the cover that would be clean and intact. Aside from that, though, I am happy to have it and have no complaints with the seller other than a mismatched item description.

Wow, what a book. There’s so much more going on here than I can get my head around. Almost feels like there’s a few hundred more pages that were cut, leaving behind only the barest details for you to figure out what else is happening. This is a five star book I’m going to have to read again to fully appreciate. I’d love to know more about the writing of this one. This is only the second SGJ I’ve read but I’ve listened to a few interviews and I wonder how his approach has changed since the early, arguably postmodern, days.
