If you are into ZZT, you have to have this recording, the last one done with Dusty Hill in the line-up. Recorded live in a studio without an audience, the sound quality is amazing and you feel you are in the middle of these three guys as they crank out some of their best tunes. A great release, and RIP Dusty Hill. P.S.: I just saw the band at Fantasy Springs Casino in Indio last week, with Elwood on bass duty. They rocked the house and reminded me what a great and underrated guitar player Billy Gibbons is. Frank Beard's drumming was impressive as well, he's a great timekeeper and is always filling in when the song calls for it.

Always great music

I have been a casual ZZ TOP fan since I bought Tres Hombres in 1973 and I have seen them play live twice. I only say this for perspective. I have always enjoyed their music and style, but I am not a super fan. This recording is simply stunning to me. The quality and the playing are fantastic. Obviously, every song is very familiar but sounds "electric". "Legs" and "Gimme All Your Lovin'" in particular seem so much better without the 80's heavy production. I can't help but feel reminded of the same feel as the Jimi Hendrix trio had on their classic recordings. Electric and energized. This is a great recording and a great listen. If you are reading this just buy it you will love it. Every track is excellent. Why only rate it a 4 then? I like to own the physical copy for quality and to have in my collection. The sleeve this CD comes in may be the worst one I have ever owned. It is cheesy and relatively uninteresting. It is very slim and not in the CD replica style of the ZZ TOP studio albums 1970-1990 box set which is really high quality and a pleasure to own. Not that any record company cares but they should have made this in that style to fit with the box set. That would have been a home run. oh well.

ZZ Top "Raw" is essentially the full performance captured in the 2019 documentary "That Little Ol' Band from Texas. Vocalist/guitarist Billy Gibbons has stated the following in the press release for this album: "The director suggested we find a way to illustrate the early style from the start of our five plus decades run. Gruene Hall was selected as a fitting backdrop to replicate the look of the band’s very beginnings. When we arrived, we were surprised to see that all our gear had been transported there so, as cameras rolled, we picked up the instruments and commenced an unplanned jam session. Fortunately, our stage engineers were on hand with tape machines in place to capture the performances that went down. That became, in essence, the soundtrack to the film and now it’s also an audio document of ZZ Top’s early beginnings."

Billy is exactly right about "Raw". It is a thrill hearing the legendary trio stripped back down to just vocals, guitar, bass and drums. This is especially evident with the renditions of "Legs" & "Gimme All Your Lovin'" which were originally released on their huge selling 1983 release "Eliminator". Hearing those two tracks in particular sans synthesizers and drum machines is a treat.

The overall song selection is quite good and while some fans may lament that they did not also perform other classes such as "Cheap Sunglasses" & "My Head's in Mississippi" to name a couple, what is here is top shelf ZZ Top regardless.

Sound quality is superb and it literally feels like you are there in the room while they were playing.

With the passing of vocalist/bassist Dusty Hill back on July 28, 2021, "Raw" also serves as a righteous tribute to the music legend. "Raw" is a must for longtime ZZ Top fans and this disc will be getting listened to quite frequently by me & many others for years to come.

Highly recommended!!

This is a stripped-down, straight-forward run-through of ZZ Top's greatest hits and likely contains the last 'new' tracks we will ever hear with the great, underrated Dusty Hill on bass. (There may be an overdub or some sweetening here or there, but that's typical of all live albums). It's intended as a companion to their recent Netflix documentary, but it can stand on it's own two feet perfectly well.

If you only know ZZ Top from their immense success in the MTV era, the in-your-face arrangements of some of these songs will be full of surprises. ZZ Top's DNA is a cross between periodic, extreme commercial re-invention and no-punches-pulled Texas blues, and these arrangements really bring this out. They may have started as a power trio, shifted into boogie, then streamlined into sleek hard rock but just dig a little deeper and you will find lots of continuity. Throughout, Billy Gibbons' lead playing and vocals shine brightly and Frank Beard's live drumming is nothing if not marvelous.

ZZ Top avoided the "unplugged" craze from the 1990s, and have never overindulged in endless live releases like some classic rockers. I think they've earned the right to this CD, and I've enjoyed listening to it as often as I can. If you're a fan, too, I think you'll love this one.

Último trabalho de um dos melhores Power trio da história do rock. Com riff de Blues esse álbum trás releituras de clássicos da banda numa performance ao vivo, embora sem público. Eu super recomendo para fãs da banda.
