I loved all the the stories, but the fun and wonder I experienced while reading the novelette "The Smallest God" is simply unforgettable.
I remember feeling so sad after finishing this book because I couldn't find the second volume in any library at that time.
This book made me fall in love with Golden Age Science Fiction, even though I was born decades after the era ended and have never seen or touched any of those wonderful pulp magazines in my life.
The TOC with the titles of all the stories in the single volume edition, can be seen on ISFDB.

Lester del Rey is an important figure in the history of the science fiction field, initially as one of John W. Campbell's best and most popular writers of both sf and fantasy, and later as a novelist, a writer of space adventures for younger readers, and as an editor. The early del Rey is not only a huge collection of two-dozen of his early stories, but also serves as an autobiography of a fascinating person, gives a lot of insight into his creative process, and reveals a lot of background information about the stories and their reception and thus about the nature of the genre in its formative years. All of his previously uncollected stories from his first in 1938 into the beginnings on the 1950s are included, each bracketed with notes, thoughts, and details. Some of them have dated significantly, but that's part of the charm, and it's still a fascinating duo.

‘El dios Más pequeño y otros relatos’ ES UNA MUY BUENA ANTOLOGÍA, CONTADA DE PRIMERA MANO POR EL ESCRITOR, Y CASI EN ORDEN CRONOLÓGICO, PARA HACERSE UNA IDEA DE ÉSTE AUTOR EN TÉRMINOS GENERALES Y ESPECÍFICOS SOBRE SUS ESTILO, TRAMAS Y CONCEPCIÓN Y DESARROLLO DE IDEAS.
La antología comienza con un prólogo del propio autor a modo de biografía, en el cual nos relata sus humilde orígenes, su fracaso en los estudios por falta de interés en la universidad, su fugaz paso en el mundo laboral como contable para, después, especializarse como crítico de artículos y relatos de sci -fi; de los cuales era ávido lector desde pequeño. Finalmente, corona su prefacio de biografía con el salto definitivo a la escritura y qué circunstancias mezcladas lo provocaron.
A partir de ahí, comenzaremos a leer sus 12 relatos contenidos aquí, y en medio sus sucesivas anécdotas de vida literaria y de la concepción de la historia que seguirá a continuación en nuestra lectura. Del Rey no escatima en detalles, pero ciertamente, se hace muy ligera la lectura de sus hábitos, conocimientos y experiencias con los editores y escritores.
UNA VEZ LEÍDA LA ANTOLOGÍA Y SUS RELATOS, QUE NO SON DEL TODO EQUILIBRADOS EN CALIDAD, DEBO OPINAR QUE ME PARECE UN AUTOR VALIENTE, ENÉRGICO, HABILIDOSO (QUIZÁ SU MEJOR CUALIDAD) Y, ESPECIALMENTE, ENTUSIASTA; POR ESO MUCHAS HISTORIAS SE PODRÍAN SALVAR DE LA QUEMA. TAMBIÉN HE NOTADO QUE SE LE DAN ESPECIALMENTE BIEN LAS NARRACIONES MÁS CORTAS QUE LARGAS, Y LAS QUE CONTIENEN UN ENFOQUE DE EXTRAVAGANCIA Y FANTASÍA.
PESE A QUE NO ES DE LAS PLUMAS MÁS TÉCNICAS NI DETALLISTAS O LÓGICAS QUE HAYA LEÍDO EN ÉSTE CAMPO NARRATIVO, ME HE LLEVADO UNA BUENA IMPRESIÓN DE LA CALIDAD INHERENTE DEL AUTOR ACERCA DE SU HABILIDAD REDACTORA; MUCHOS, MEJORES QUE ÉL EN ÉSTE COMPLEJO GÉNERO, NO PUEDEN DECIRLO; ESO YA ES UN PLUS EN SÍ MISMO.
Como mejores historias, destaco:
· Mi fiel amigo (Un vuelco de concepto distópico acerca del origen y devenir de las especies en el astro madre, precedente al famoso ‘Planeta de los simios’)
· Cruz de fuego (otra vuelta de rosca, ésta vez a un clásico tema del género de terror)
· Hábito (irónica y dinámica historia de sci fi juvenil, que se acerca al estilo Heinleiniano)
· Me llamo Legión ( o lo que podría haber sido del Füher en ‘The twilight zone’)
A continuación, paso a resumir cada relato y mis impresiones sobre éstos:
1/El fiel amigo:
El primer caso de can Mutado y evolucionado, relata el origen de ello ( debido a un científico innovador al que homenajes en su discurso y el cual es actualmente gel único ser humano vivo),el desarrollo civil compartido en el planeta, la hecatombe nuclear, le fallecimiento de los humanos y la consagración temporal de los perros,cm única fuerza racional en el astro y las paces con sus potenciales enemigos subdesarrollados, los simios, para los cuales tienen un futuro esperanzador...
RELATO LA MAR DE CURIOSO, BIEN REDACTADO Y SIN PONER DEMASIADO DETALLE CIENTÍFICO, SOLO EL NECESARIO ( que Parte de mucha fantasía), PERO CON UNA ENORME CANTIDAD DE EMOTIVIDAD Y FUERZA. Aquí LESTER DA UNA VUELTA DE ROSCA A LAS CONSABIDAS historias distópicas delimitadas entre hombre y simio. Dato importante: publicada muchísimo antes q El Planeta de los simios. Estás, a diferencia de la otra, tiene una lectura mucho más blanca.
Me ha gustado mucho.
2/ Cruz de fuego:
Un hombre en medio de una población rural se despierta a causa de un relámpago y trata de recordar cómo apareció allí. Si acciones y progresiva incursión en la localidad de rememorarán todo.
RELATO DE TIPO FANTÁSTICO EN SU VERTIENTE DE SCI FI, NARRADO EN PRIMERA PERSONA, QUE HABLA ACERCA DE UN CLÁSICO DEL TERROR, OTORGANDO AL LECTOR UNA VUELTA DE ROSCA, Y MODIFICANDO A CIERTOS HECHOS SUSTANCIALES ACERCA DE SU TEORÍA Y EN SU CONCLUSIÓN TAMBIÉN.
ME HA GUSTADO.
3/ De todo:
En la pequeña (y, obviamente chismosa) población de Carlsburg, hace días que va en boca de todos la llegada de un extraño forastero que trabaja a cambio de manutención, y es especialista en todo. Uno de los brillantes redactores del diario local, Luck, irá tras su pista y se hará amigo de éste, sacando a relucir su secreto...
RELATO SIMPÁTICO, DESENFADADO Y CÁNDIDO A LA VEZ, DE CORTE FANTÁSTICO, CON MEZCLA DE FOLCLORE TRADICIONAL Y CRITICA SOCIAL. BIEN ESCRITO PERO ALGO OBSOLETO.
ME HA GUSTADO.
4/ Hábito :
El hijo de un antiguo piloto de carreras en cohetes espaciales, prueba suerte por primera vez en el que será el circuito más largo de la historia, desde Marte hasta Júpiter y vuelta a origen. Antes del trayecto rememorará viejos pasajes y hábitos familiares ya que dará en escena la aparición de un viejo, algo bravucón aunque noble amigo de su progenitor.
RELATO FRESCO E IRÓNICO, CON DOS BUENOS Y CÍNICOS PERSONAJES BUSCAVIDAS, QUE PRETENDER DEJAR DE LADO EL LASTRE DE LOS HÁBITOS DE LAS PERSONAS ADEMÁS DE DESCRIBIRNOS LO QUE SERÍA UNA CARRERA ESPACIAL DE COHETES (qué según el piloto protagonista, hasta es más excitante las canicas..), ADEMÁS DE SER EL PRIMERO EN HABLARNOS ACERCA DE LA TEORÍA DE ACELERACIÓN ELEVADA Y SU ENFOQUE EFICIENTE AL RESPECTO.
NO OBSTANTE, DEL REY NO LO ELOGIA PARA NADA, YA QUE COMETIÓ UN ERROR CIENTÍFICO GARRAFAL, Y ESO ES IMPERDONABLE EN UNA NARRACIÓN DE SCI FI; según sus propias palabras.
AÚN ASÍ Y CON TODO ESO, ME HA GUSTADO MUCHO. SE ACERCA AL ESTILO JUVENIL HEINLENIANO.
ME HA GUSTADO MUCHO.
5/El dios más pequeño:
Una científico lleva años intentando crear lo que sería el primer el vivo sintético en un laboratorio. Ya tiene el cuerpo formado. Sin embargo, no consigue dar con la clave de otorgarle vida y pensamiento. Casualmente, otro colega con el cual está en constante dilema, creará paralelamente otro ser, a partir de sus pensamientos evocados. Es entonces cuando todo convergerá de manera opuesta a la lógica, y en dónde los conflictos, argucias, envidias, deseos y obsesiones darán lugar dentro de tan frío marco.
RELATO SEMI LARGO QUE TRATA DE MANERA CURIOSA EL MITO DE FRANKENSTEIN PERO A LO MODERNO, DÁNDOSE LAS MISMAS BASES FILOSÓFICAS Y MORALES, ADEMÁS DE SER UN PASTICHE DE SCI FI, DETESTIVESCO Y SEMI SENTIMENTALOIDE. ESCRITO HÁBILMENTE, PERO CON MUCHO MÁS ENTUSIASMO QUE FONDO CIENTÍFICO Y DE DESARROLLO ( como bien mismo comenta a posteriori Del Rey), NO DEJA DE RESULTAR ENTRETENIDO, RARO Y HASTA ENTERNECEDOR A RATOS.
ME HA GUSTADO.
6/Las estrellas miran hacia abajo:
Dos científicos y empresarios rivales, se suman en un proyecto de construcción de un cohete avanzado. De por medio habrá contiendas políticas, judiciales, familiares y de estado, además de altercados con olor a saboteo.
SEGUNDO RELATO LARGO DE LA ANTOLOGÍA. ÉSTE, A DIFERENCIA DEL ANTERIOR, ES DEMASIADO CLÁSICO Y SOBRIO EN FORMA Y ESTRUCTURA. Del Rey DEMUESTRA QUE PUEDE ESCRIBIR COMO SUS COETÁNEOS, SIN EMBARGO, LO PREFIERO CORTO Y MÁS IMAGINATIVO Y ABSTRACTO.
Creo que ése es su punto fuertes.
ESTÁ BIEN
7/ Réplica en bronce:
Aquí vuelve a aparecer, y como excepción en su obra, un personaje de origen folklórico en lo que vendría a ser un spin off de sus aventuras. En éste caso está de trabajador en una herrería y ayuda entre otras cosas a un jovenzuelo que desea el amor de un chica.
RELATO SUMAMENTE CÁNDIDO E INCLUSO INFANTILOIDE, QUE NO CASA PARA NADA CON LO QUE VIENE SIENDO LA GENERALIDAD DE ÉSTA ANTOLOGÍA.
NO ESTÁ MAL.
8/Reencarnación:
Un científico que trabaja con el átomo sufre un terrible accidente, sin embargo, y gracias a cortos experimentos pioneros de trasplante cerebral en otros cuerpos, logrará vivir...O volver a vivir en oro hábitat.
RELATO INSPIRADO NUEVAMENTE EN FRANKESTEIN Y PRECURSOR DE ROBOCOP, PERO MÁS SENTIMENTALOIDE Y CON NOVIA INCLUIDA.
ESTÁ BIEN.
9/Carrillón de cráneos:
Una historiadora y un detective, bajo un ' encuentro fortuito ', aúnan fuerzas para investigar una serie de asesinatos cometidos bajo el ritual de la amputación de la cabeza.
CURIOSO RELATO TIPO THRILLER CON TOQUES GÓTICOS Y MEZCLA DE MALDICIONES CLÁSICAS, CON EL AÑADIDO DE PERSONALES TELÚRICOS SEMI DEMONÍACOS DE CARNE Y HUESO.
ME HA GUSTADO.
10) Sin águilas:
Un segundo piloto de una nave dirección a Marte es supervisado en el trayecto, pero además tendrá que lidiar con altercados entre pasajeros civiles y militares, meteoros entrometidos y súper héroes de única especie.
RELATO DE SCI FI MARCA DE LA CASA, A LO COSTUMBRISTA CONDUCTUAL DE LAS RELACIONES ENTRE SERES Y SUCESOS EN UN POSIBLE FUTURO. LOS PERSONAJES DE DEL REY TIENEN BUENA BASE PERO LA MAYORÍA DE ÉSTAS HISTORIAS SE ACABAN DILUYENDO EN LA NADA Y RESULTAN ANECDÓTICAS, YA QUE CARECEN DE CIERTA RESOLUCIÓN Y EMPAQUE DE DESARROLLO. UNA LÁSTIMA, POR QUÉ NO TIENE MALA PLUMA.
ESTÁ BIEN.
11/Me llamo Legión :
El tercer Reich ha caído, el ejercito de ocupación está acabando con lo que queda de las tropas del Fūher. Mientras tanto, un caudillo escondido durante meses vuelve a su tierra, con la esperanza de levantar su gloria nuevamente; ésta vez con un as de desarrollo tecnológico bajo la manga...
RELATO DE SCI FI QUE MEDIANTE LA SUPOSICIÓN EXTENDIDA DEL FALSO SUICIDIO DE HITLER Y SU EXILIO, HACE QUE ÉSTE COBRE LO QUE PODRÍA HABER SIDO, GRACIAS A LA CIENCIA Y LA VENGANZA, SU PEOR INFIERNO EN LA TIERRA.
ME HA GUSTADO.
12/ Aunque crezcan las amapolas:
Un soldado de infantería vaga casi exhausto por un paraje que no cree reconocer al principio. Casi a punto de desfallecer, se recobrará al encontrarse con una encantadora pero curiosa joven que le ayudará, además de hacerle que vuelva a querer alistarse en el batallón...
RELATO FANTÁSTICO - MILITAR, CON UN AURA ENTERNECEDORA, FILOSÓFICA Y NOSTALGICA; QUE ME HA RECORDADO A CIERTOS CAPITULOS DE LA FAMOSA ‘TWILIGHT ZONE’. A DEL REY SE LE DA ESPECIALMENTE BIEN ÉSTE TIPO DE ENFOQUE SEMI BÉLICO Y MORALISTA; COMO EL ANTERIOR RELATO.
ME HA GUSTADO.

UNA LÁSTIMA, POR QUÉ NO TIENE MALA PLUMA.

RELATO FANTÁSTICO - MILITAR, CON UN AURA ENTERNECEDORA, FILOSÓFICA Y NOSTALGICA; QUE ME HA RECORDADO A CIERTOS CAPITULOS DE LA FAMOSA ‘TWILIGHT ZONE’. A DEL REY SE LE DA ESPECIALMENTE BIEN ÉSTE TIPO DE ENFOQUE SEMI BÉLICO Y MORALISTA; COMO EL ANTERIOR RELATO.

In Christmas 1937, so the autobiography goes, Lester Del Rey sent off a story called 'the faithful' to see if he could make it as a scifi author. He was goaded into doing this by his girlfriend who was fed up with his griping about the accuracy of the fiction that existed at the time.
Now, being an ignorant chap, I had never heard of this chap before, but this collection of stories, starting with 'the faithful', is both a nice introduction to his early writing, and also a guide to 'how I started'
Not all the stories are excellent: LDR has taken the unusual step of including some which are 'not quite so good' but which sold alongside those of which he is proud. Standouts for me are 'Anything' (small town America experiences a brownie), 'the Smallest God' (radioactive clay is used to fill a rubber mould called Hermes who subsequently comes to life), 'Doubled in brass' (car repairs done by one of the 'little people'). It's really interesting to see where scifi/fantasy was in the 30s and 40s and how much it got right (using neurones linked to electronics to control artificial limbs in 'Reincarnate') and wrong (using ion drives to launch rockets in 'Habit' and 'the stars look down'). The fantasy elements are nice and not too anachronistic. What is relevant to historians though would be the last two stories, 'my name is legion' and 'though poppies grow'. 'Legion' deals with WW2 and how a scientist with Jewish links manages to trap Hitler in a self-contained purgatorial universe towards the end of the war; 'poppies' deals with an unknown soldier from WW1 brought back to life around the 4th July in 41/42, in response to the line "if you fail us who die, we shall not sleep, / Though poppies grow in Flanders Field."
It seem quite poignant that I finished this story today, the day on which the first shots were fired in WW1.

Overall four stars, since some are three and some five. Started 3-8-2014 and finished 5-8-2014, simply because we were out so much at Hartland Point, Quay and Abbey on 3-4 of August.

3.5 stars This dip into the early sci-fi works of Lester Del Rey (Volume I of II) is more a curation
than a collection. As a collection it is kinda weak. Only a few of the stories really deliver
and a couple held so little interest for me that I kept hoping a bus could pick me up and
hurry me to the end of the story (DOUBLED IN BRASS, HABIT). As a curation, it is
much more interesting. Linking the stories is a de facto memoir of the author’s early
days and how he evolved as a writer. While his stories represent what sci-fi was like in
the 30’s and early 40’s, the memoir portions of the book give a feel for the publications
of the day. There is evident growth as the writer moves from the earlier stories to the
later ones with my favorite by far appearing 2nd from the end—MY NAME IS LEGION.
This story is so good that it hints at the possibilities of Science Fiction in a way that
nearly 80 years later it still gives me hope. It uses time travel in a fashion not entirely
dissimilar than the movie LOOPER one of my favorites in recent years. REINCARNATE
and THE SMALLEST GOD are also both good but are weakened by sentimentality
especially at the end. CARILLON OF SKULLS hints at some horror story telling but
softens to Fantasy a genre for which I often have little patience. This certainly succeeds
on the level of making me want to read Volume II but also informs me that I might want
to be a little selective in reading his works overall.

Such an interesting book. It starts with Del Rey's first story publication up until his first novelette (Nerves). The stories themselves are fun, if they do sometimes feel a bit dated. More interesting, however, are his personal commentaries between the stories. A must read for any hardcore speculative fiction fans.
