Plot[]

Susie is an empathetic young girl with a vivid imagination, always anthropomorphizing. Meanwhile, Samantha is a smart and serious girl who uses her interest in learning to calm her own vivid imagination, which leads to bullying. Three years ago, when she was four and Samantha was three, Susie was distraught upon seeing the leaves of an oak tree falling off, and she decided to name it Oliver. Her godmother, Jeanie, had told her she was “plugged in” and felt things others didn’t, and she begins to feel as if there’s something rotting or going stale. She tries communicating with Samantha and her mother about this, but they ignore her. Instead, they always look sad and upset, and Susie doesn’t understand why.

This is because, one year ago, Susie was lured away and murdered at Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza by a serial killer. Susie's tragic death broke her family apart, with her dad leaving her mother and Samantha to deal with the grief by themselves. Susie's spirit lingers throughout her house during the day, with Samantha and her mother unable to see or hear her. Every night at midnight, Chica comes to the house and will take Susie’s hand, leading her away from the house. As the two leave, Susie feels herself fading away until she is suddenly back at her house by morning. Samantha and her mother begin to notice strange sounds at night, but don’t fully question them.

Patricia, their mother, blames herself for Susie’s death, believing that if she discouraged Susie’s vivid thoughts she wouldn’t have been easily lured away. She has seeked counseling and her best friend Jeanie also helps, and Patricia has slowly been getting better, although still needing to take pills in order to sleep. Samantha, however, has made little progress with her therapist, Rhonda, who says that something is stuck in her head. One day, a boy approaches Samantha to ask if she’s seen Susie’s ghost, as he believes ghosts are real and thinks they hang around if they want something. Later, Rhonda informs Samantha that her mother plans to send her somewhere else, and Samantha decides to reveal what she’s been holding back: Her and Susie had a fight over a doll named Gretchen, as Samantha wanted it to study while Susie wanted it to play. Susie had taken the doll and hidden it. Before she was killed, Susie had told Samantha she was going to find a better hiding spot.

Revealing this makes Samantha feel better, and she becomes more talkative with her mother while she drives home. Susie would much rather talk about cute things, and when she blows into Samantha’s ear she goes silent, having felt it. Later, Susie tells Samantha that she misses them and Gretchen, but she doesn’t remember where she hid her. She then decides to draw a picture to help Samantha remember and find Gretchen. Samantha leaves and comes back to find a three part story drawn on a paper she didn’t remember leaving on the floor. The first drawing confuses Samantha, so Susie makes a second one, freaking Samantha out when she feels the air shift around her.

Samantha has her mother read a story about a happy ghost who is saddened to learn that his family is moving away. The ghost eventually learns that if he went to a special place of sparkly light for truly happy ghosts, then he can be with his family forever. Once finished, Samantha decodes Susie’s drawings. The first part shows Susie trying to ask Samantha to help find Gretchen, with a strange chick behind her. The second and third parts show Susie being led away from the house by the chick. The second drawing consists of three parts which are just Susie being led away from the door on different nights, and Samantha concludes that this means Susie only has two nights left.

Samantha gets up early in the morning and immediately begins searching for Gretchen. She first checks the dining room, then the living room, the kitchen pantry, her father’s office, and the kitchen. The rooms bring back memories of Susie, but Samantha doesn’t find Gretchen anywhere. After school, Samantha immediately feels Susie’s presence in the car and questions how much influence Susie’s ghost has over her actions, feeling a wave of negative emotions flow over her. She then looks in the hole in Oliver’s trunk, in her mother’s studio, and in her mother’s room, but still cannot find Gretchen. Later, Patricia calls Jeanie to tell her about Samantha looking through her things, but Jeanie tells her she must have had a reason. Then, she tells Patricia to let it all go.

That night, Chica goes inside the house, restraining Susie. Samantha wakes up from a nightmare and hears Chica approaching her room. She tries hiding under her bed but Chica tricks her into coming out, so she climbs out of her window as Chica rips her nightgown. Samantha jumps down from the porch roof and turns on the light to the kitchen, tricking Chica as she runs towards her father’s old office. She discovers Gretchen in a secret room which her father used to make stories about. Samantha escapes outside and hides behind Oliver as Chica chases after.

When Chica makes it outside, she takes Susie’s hand and begins leading her away from the house. Samantha shouts for them to stop, and when Susie tells Chica she needs to go back something shifts in the air and Chica lets go of her hand. Samantha watches as Oliver’s fallen leaves swirled up and away from the tree. Then, Susie appears in front of Oliver. Samantha hands Gretchen over to Susie and the two sisters hug, with Samantha feeling a positive wave of emotions flowing over her this time. Samantha watches Susie return to Chica and continue walking, disappearing as Oliver drops his last leaf. Samantha believes this is a beginning, and she’s certain that Susie is going where she can be with her family forever.

Speculation[]

WitheredChica-Icon "I was the first! I have seen everything!"

This section archives a lot of theories and speculation, which usually occurs from pre-release media, or just things that are still unknown, so please keep that in mind while reading. The page will continue to be updated with the most accurate information as more solid evidence is supplied.

  • As explored throughout the story, Susie who possessed Chica, has a supernatural ability to split into two ego entities, one being agony and the other being peaceful. It is implied that Susie's soul is her normal peaceful ego, whereas Chica is implied to be Susie's agony ego. The process of splitting into two soul entities is unknown, however, this may have a connection with alter egos and how ghosts have special powers to control their spiritual entities.

Trivia[]

  • There's a small error in the story regarding Samantha's age. At the beginning of the story it is established that Samantha is 6 years old.[1] However, later in the story she is called an 8-year-old.[2]
  • This story tells the backstory of Susie, one of the five children from the missing children incident.
    • This story marks the second time one of the killed children receive a backstory, with the other one being Charlie, the spirit who possesses the Puppet.
  • Susie's killer is mentioned in the story. It is also mentioned that he killed other children on the day he killed Susie. Although he isn't named, he is most likely William Afton.
  • Unlike Susie's game and novel counterpart, where she is depicted as having blonde hair and blue eyes, this version of her is depicted as having brown hair and brown eyes.
  • This is the third story to have a happy, uplifting ending (the others being Into the Pit, Out of Stock, and The Cliffs).
  • There was an illustration made for this story, but the illustrations were ultimately scrapped for the whole series. It was reused for its own page in The Ultimate Guide.
    • The illustration shows Chica taking Susie away at midnight.
