Editorial Reviews

Digitally remastered two CD set containing a pair of albums from the prog icon plus bonus tracks. Greg Lake is best known as the co-founder of King Crimson and Emerson Lake And Palmer (ELP). This set collects together both of Lake's two solo albums, his first self-titled album (1981) and his second album Manoeuvres (1983). The set includes four bonus tracks which have never been included on any reissue of the albums, only on separate rarities albums. The first album and its three bonus tracks feature all of the members of Toto with the exception of Bobby Kimball as Lake handles all lead vocals. Both albums also feature appearances Gary Moore on guitar. Both CDs have received a 2015 REMASTER which has the personal approval of Greg Lake. The booklet includes extensive liner notes.

Greg Lake one of the best British vocalist and tremendous bass player, would release his first solo album in the spring of 1981. After the break-up of ELP in 1978, Greg started thinking about his next move. On this album he brought in Irish guitarist Gary Moore, who was just getting done with his album "Dirty Fingers", and the group G-Force(which disbanded). Greg also brought in the late Tommy Eyre on keyboards, Tristram Margetts (Spontaneous Combustion) 1971-1974 on bass and Ted McKenna (Rory Gallagher) on drums. Other notable players on this disc included, Mike Giles (King Crimson), Snuffy Walden (Stray Dog) which Lake produced in 1973, Clarence Clemons (E-Street Band) and Steve Lukather, David Hungate and the late Jeff Porcaro from (Toto). The album starts with the Gary Moore classic "Nuclear Attack", which Greg did wonders with the song and Gary's solo was what sold me on this album in the first place (Which i heard it on the radio, they actually played good music in the old days)! "Love You Too Much", co-written with Bob Dylan, fast paced tune with some sharp guitar work by Gary. "It Hurts", is a dramatic mid-tempo rocker ballad which fits Greg's voice to a tee, Gary's solo at the end is priceless. "Black And Blue", this is one of Greg's best ballads. "Retribution Drive", here changes style's and comes out smokin', an upbeat charmer with some funky guitar work by Gary, nice keyboard work by Tommy Eyre. "Long Goodbye", continues the hard charging Greg, nice cowbell by Ted McKenna. "The Lie", a very good mid-tempo rocker, with some sturdy guitar by Gary. "Someone", a rollickin' tune with shifty rhythm's, sax solo by the "Big Man", Clarence Clemmons. "Let Me Love You Once Before You Go", #49 hot 100, a nice single that gave the album some push, a very ELP sounding tune. "For Those Who Dare", bagpipes, irish sounding, Greg's salute to the troops, another tune that brings to mind late ELP. Thanks to Rock Candy and Andy Pearce for finally releasing this album. Nice 12 page booklet inside. If your a Gary Moore fan get these two Greg Lake album's and if your an ELP fan, you should also get these albums. Greg would release "Manoeuvres", in mid 1983.

Greg lake decided to get a bit metal with these albums after the disaster of Love Beach and enlisted Gary Moore to shred it up! And that he does on several tracks , a few songs I can do without but most are great, if you're a fan of either guy you'll love it

Greg Lake is many things: singer, bass player, guitarist, composer & lyricist. But one occupation people don't normally think of as attached to his name: producer. Don't forget: he was the producer for those classic ELP albums, and he should be recalled with just as much awe and merit as Alan Parsons or Trevor Horn.

That said, it's Greg Lake the producer who lets me down here. These albums sounded great way back when, but the original production on these fine works is lost. These cannot possibly be the master tapes! "I Don't Want To Lose Your Love Tonight" is particularly fuzzy. It sounds like a tape that I found under my car seat. I listened to "Let Me Love You Once" on both the previous release of "Greg Lake" and on this new one, and they both suffer from a tape flub at about the 3:20 mark. However, the version of that song which appears on "From The Beginning: The Greg Lake Retrospective" is totally clean and perfect. Someone has the proper tapes of these albums, and it's not Greg Lake.

Now for the pluses: Lake's singing is top notch. Early '80s Lake is the best! He was at the absolute top of his vocal form. The playing is all excellent, passionate and enthusiastic. Gary Moore is outstanding. (A great example would be his crazed guitar work on "The Lie.")

Back when "Greg Lake" was released, I (like pretty much every other fan) was expecting some sort of art rock, and was surprised to find just straight-ahead rock-and-roll. I was initially disappointed... and then discovered that I was listening to the album twice a day. It's one of those "soundtrack of my youth" sort of albums. Then, when "Manouevres" came out, I jumped into it wholeheartedly, already knowing that straight-ahead rock-and-roll was Lake's new residence. Imagine Asia, but with more of a mature and sometimes dark, "late-night" feel. ("Someone" and "Retribution Drive" show this darker side.)

The standout song on the whole thing is "Haunted." A fantastic pop ballad that puts anything Elton John ever did in the dust. Lake's voice soars and booms. Turn this one up to eleven! Why Chrysalis didn't release it as a single & video back in 1983 is a total mystery. Oh, well. No one ever accused record label execs of brilliance.

The bonus tracks are all worthwhile. Their recordings sound a tad bit rougher than the rest, but they're fun to hear, and even beg repeated listening.

Bottom line: Pay no attention to the detractors who think "there's nothing here but ordinary rock." Come on! They can't all be "Brain Salad Surgery!" Lake was trying a different road and laid down some very strong and fun recordings doing it.

Greg Lake's first solo album. For some reason, he was never satisfied with this album, thought it was not cohesive. I remember when it came out and I was so glad that he had started another band. I remember listening for the first time and being blown away by the musicianship of all who participated in this project. I have always loved this album, and if you listen without prejudice, I bet you will too. "It Hurts".

This is an excellent CD! I love Greg Lake and just discovered his past solo work. The music is hard rock, along with a few slower tunes. I know fans are used to Greg's more progressive sound with ELP and King Crimson, but I applaud him for venturing out and doing something different! RIP Greg. You are truly missed!

Greg Lake was always great. Add some blistering rock guitar from the late and super great Gary Moore and it's an album worth buying. Steve Lukather and Jeff Pocoro also guest as musicians, but note it is Greg Lake on the vocals he is main man for the whole album.

So you have cornucopia of great music performed by some of the very best in the music business. It's a rock album, not blues and it's a thundering album. One of my now favourite plays. But for those who may be thinking this is another Gary Moore sideline project like BBM it's not. He does no vocals on this one.

Queste tracce bonus però erano già state pubblicate in passato negli Official Bootleg di Greg Lake.

3.0 out of 5 stars GREAT CAST - SHOULD HAVE BEEN MORE
Reviewed in Australia on December 12, 2019
I bought this double CD covering most of Greg Lake's solo output after reading LUCKY MAN, the Greg Lake autobiography and my immediate reaction was that it could and should have been so much more given the stellar cast he surrounded himself with. For a start there is the late/great Irish guitarist Gary Moore (Skid Row (Irish version)/Thin Lizzy. Ted McKenna (Rory Gallagher Band) on Drums and Tommy Eyre on Keyboards along with bassist Tristram Margetts make for a powerful backing band!!
The music itself is well executed with each player given ample room to strut their stuff but anyone expecting Works Volume One Greg Lake will be disappointed.
His two albums; Self Titled and Manoeuvres are here in their entirety along with some bonus material which is basically Lake and Toto doing some good old rock n roll.
Gary Moore's explosive NUCLEAR ATTACK gets things off to an amazing start but sadly it's all a bit down hill after that.
On the Manoeuvres album there are three songs which have the word love in the title and three more which elude to love. Someone once said that when that happens the artist is sadly out of ideas. Draw your own conclusion.
It is overall an enjoyable listen and suitable for boring car journeys with many sing along moments but it SHOULD have been so much more.
