  Technically speaking, Buena Vista Social Club aren’t even really a band; the term, in contemporary musical terms, really refers to the album of that name, released in September of 1997, that saw guitarist Ry Cooder and Cuban bandleader Juan de Marcos Gonzalez pay homage to the forties membership club of the same name by bringing together an eclectic array of musicians to create one of the defining works of contemporary Latin music; indeed, the album was awarded the Grammy for Best Traditional Tropical Latin Album in 1998, and was one of only two albums on Rolling Stone’s rundown of the top 500 albums of all time to be produced in a non-English speaking country. Whilst only a live album, At Carnegie Hall, has officially followed the album, a twelve-piece have continued to tour under the Buena Vista name, helping to bring the music of Cuba to a new audience across the globe. A show at Manchester’s Bridgewater Hall in 2010 saw them bring brass, percussion and an array of singers with them and, in the process, bring a touch of Caribbean sunshine to a drizzly Northern night as they more than did justice to the album’s legacy. They continue to tour, and it’s a show quite unlike any other; keep your eyes peeled for further dates.

• An album or a band? the line has become slightly more blurred over the years. All we do know is that Buena Vista Social Club makes high quality tropical world music. Originally a project created by musician Juan de Marcos González and American guitarist Ry Cooder and inspired by the prolific Buena Vista Social Club. The album gained such a critical acclaim and performed so well commercially that they decided to tour it.

  Now performing all over the globe, fans flock from far and wide to see the classic piece of music performed. A whole host of musicians playing a whole variety of instruments takes to the stage to boldly recreate the album in full. Starting with the upbeat tones of 'Chan Chan' the audience are instantly engaged and captivated with the intriguing band.

  Moving through the much loved album, the band really play to an exceptional level and the way the music comes together is quite fascinating as there is such variation in musical instrument. During the crescendo of 'Candela' it is apparent that the music and theme ties the group together in perfect harmony and the standing ovation received is truly justified.

• Buena Vista Social Club, led by Juan de Marcos Gonzalez and guitarist Ry Cooder, is a group of musicians and dancers who are named as homage to a Cuban tradition: a tradition of coming together in the name of dance and music and against repression and confinement. The collective, whose name comes from their album which paid homage to the original social and historical origins of the group, express freedom and creativity. They are beautiful to watch on stage, with their array of performers and instruments. I have always loved world music and have never seen such an authentic and passionate collective in my life. The group have redefined Latin music and world music, achieving international success with their extraordinary work. The atmosphere they create is incredible: fun and passionate and electric. Everybody was in high spirits all night and the crowd couldn’t stop dancing. The collective brought the Cuban sunshine to the United Kingdom with them, lighting up the dreary streets of rainy London with their colourful and creative show, complete with brass and wind instruments and a host of great singers.

• Fantastic experience, one of the most entertaining concerts I have been to! A group of incredibly talented musicians with such memorable performances, their energy was astounding and truly inspiring - How amazing it would be to be like them when I'm 80!!
