Trotz seiner 60 Jahre ist der sture Dickschädel Donald Sullivan, genannt Sully, weder weise noch leise. Sully (Paul Newman), der bei seiner ehemaligen Lehrerin (Jessica Tandy) zur Untermiete wohnt, schlägt sich in der verschlafenen Kleinstadt Bath mehr schlecht als recht als Gelegenheitsarbeiter durch. Dabei liegt er ständig im Streit mit dem lokalen Bauunternehmer Carl Roebuck (Bruce Willis), dessen junge Frau Toby (Melanie Griffith) er ins Herz geschlossen hat. Sein Starrsinn und sein unberechenbares Temperament bringen Sully oft genug in Schwierigkeiten und haben ihn längst seiner Familie entfremdet. Als sein Sohn Peter sich von seiner Frau trennt und mit seinem Sohn nach Bath heimkehrt, versucht Sully einen Neuanfang.

Die warmherzige Komödie von Oscar-Preisträger Robert Benton (Kramer gegen Kramer) ist ein filmisches Kleinod erster Güte. Benton, der für seine Adaption des Romans von Richard Russo für den Oscar nominiert wurde, zeichnet ein liebevolles Porträt der eigensinnigen, aber durchweg sympathischen Menschen mit all ihren Fehlern und Schwächen, ohne sie dabei jemals bloßzustellen. Paul Newman (Road to Perdition), der für seine Leistung 1995 auf der Berlinale mit dem Silbernen Bären geehrt wurde, läuft als kauziger Einzelgänger zu Höchstform auf. In ihrer letzten Rolle ist Jessica Tandy (Oscar für Miss Daisy und ihr Chauffeur) zu sehen.

Der Soundtrack von Oscar-Preisträger Howard Shore (Der Herr der Ringe) ist einer der seltenen Fälle, in denen die Musik auch unabhängig vom Film bestehen kann. Shore gelingt es perfekt, der winterlichen Kleinstadtatmosphäre und den eigensinnigen Bewohnern musikalisch Ausdruck zu verleihen. Wer Filme wie Straight Story oder You Can Count On Me mag, ist bei Nobody's Fool ebenfalls bestens aufgehoben. --Birgit Schwenger

Hätte ich an einem verregneten Sonntag im Herbst 2002 nicht zufällig PREMIERE nebenbei laufen gehabt, diese wundervolle Fimplerle wäre mir wohl auf ewig verschlossen geblieben.
Paul Newman spielt den grantigen, aber herzensguten Gelegenheitsarbeiter Sully mit eine Wärme und Präsenz, wie er es vorher selten gezeigt hat. Jessica Tandy in ihrer letzten Rolle, eine nie wieder so bezubernde Melanie Griffith und ein schelmischer Bruce Willis als fieser "Gelegenheits - Boss" von Sully erweitern den Cast mit bekannten Gesichtern. Aber auch der Rest der Schauspieler mit teilweise wirklich schrulligen Charakteren ist einfach genial und jeder passt perfekt in seine Rolle.
Vor allem das "Paar" Paul Newman - Bruce Willis harmoniert perfekt, die Dialoge zwischen diesen beiden sind grossartig.
Die Musik ist genial, nie aufdringlich. Die Dialoge und einige skurile Situationen lassen den Zuschauer immer wieder schmunzeln.
Ein ruhiger Film mit der wundervollen, winterlichen Atmosphäre einer amerikanischen Kleinstadt ohne Glamour.
Ein einfach fantastischer Film, der mir schon so machen Winterabend Freude bereitet hat.

Die DVD kann aufgrund der Codierung nicht in DVD Playern in Deitschland abgespielt werden, aber ein normaler Computer tut's, das muss man natürlich wissen. Ton ist nur in Englisch, aber Untertitel helfen, wenn der amerikanische Akzent zu schwer zu verstehen ist. Obwohl ich das Buch sehr mag, gefiel mir der Film ein kleines bisschen weniger gut. Obwohl das natürlich trotzdem ein sehr guter Film mit super Svhauspielrn ist!! Etwas besser ist die Verfilmung von Empire Falls, aber das ist eine persönliche Meinung.

Die DVD ist auf den einheimischen DVD-Playern nicht abspielbar. Ich musste lernen, dass es sich um eine Region 1 Disc handelt, welche nur auf DVD-Playern aus den USA und Kanada wiedergegeben werden kann. Natürlich habe ich die DVD ausgepackt und die Einschränkung erst beim Ausprobieren bemerkt. Den 2 mm kleinen Hinweis auf der Rückseite habe ich beim Kauf nicht gesehen - leider reingefallen, ein Kauf-Hinweis wäre nett gewesen. Die nette Antwort, dass ich 50% vom Kaufpreis zurückbekommen würde, macht mit dem Aufwand für den Versand wohl keinen Sinn - also ab in die Schublade damit..

Never has a film been so critically applauded (it was nominated for several Oscars, including Best Actor Paul Newman), so criminally neglected or so in need of Region 2 release!

Having read Richard Russo's giant of a novel, I rushed to see this film when it opened in the cinema and was not disappointed. This gentle tale of small town America is a joy to behold. The quiet simplicity of its characterisation rings true on every level, the beautifully bleak landscape of the town providing the perfect backdrop for the hopes and fears, joys and sorrows of its citizens. Paul Newman is perfect as Sully, the part-time worker, part-time father central to the story. The supporting cast are no less impressive, particularly Jessica Tandy, but even Bruce Willis shines in a straight, non-action role!

I would snap up the DVD today if it were only available in Region 2 PAL format! Paramount, I hope you're reading and taking note!

The bittersweet mainstream American movie of the 1990's.Paul Newman in possibly his greatest performance plays Donald "Sully" Sullivan a man whose life has been one long history of failure- divorced,estranged from his only son, an odd job man with a dodgy knee whose only friends are a selection of oddballs who all live in the depressing town of Bath in upstate New York.
However in the hands of director Robert Benton with a script from Richard Russo(who adapted his novel of the same name)this is more upbeat than down with a stellar cast that includes an excellent Bruce Willis as Newman's archrival in business and Melanie Griffth who has a moment with Newman that makes the film worthwhile almost on it's own.
From the ashes of broken relationships and directionless lives comes a film of beauty,quiet grace and exquisite charm.Highly recommended.

Both the original novel and the screenplay was writte4n by Pullitzer Prize winner "Richard Russo" (Empire Falls, Bridge of Sighs)so that well defined characters, a superb plot and a realistic setting began on paper. From that point, the finest performers out there were placed into the hands of master director and writer, Robert Benton to create this brilliant film. In a forgotten upstate New York town, Sully (Newman) is approaching retirement in a life that was based on labor that has left him with a destroyed knee, destroyed marriage and an estranged relationship with his son. He rents a room from an old woman who lives alone in a large house that used to be the Grand Dame of the town in years past. The house and street, like the woman herself (played remarkably by Jessica Tandy in her final acting performance)have become worn out, sagging along the roof lines and a street sprinkled with large trees in various stages of dying; a metaphor that isn't lost on anyone. Outstanding performances by Bruce Willis, Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Melanie Griffith, and Josef Sommers are just a few of the performances that create a world into which we become lost for a period of 108 minutes. Benton and cinematographer John Bailey have captured the gray bleak winter of upstate New York and both this ambiance and the town itself (like the Street mentioned before) become a character entity all on it's own.
Paul Newman was nominated and won multiple acting awards for this role and many would say that the role suited him, thinking that this is how acting works, but instead, Newman was given a rare opportunity in Hollywood: the chance to perform a character that was so well defined and so flawlessly written and directed that an Oscar nod was guaranteed at the first table read.(It is interested that Newman would later play a supporting role in Russo's next film, "Empire Falls" for HBO Films). An actor of Newman's quality combined with all of the elements attached to this film create a vehicle for Newman that allows him to stand out along with a cast whose awarded hardware would more than fill the back of a pick-up truck. If you've seen the film only one or if you've not seen the film, it's time to rent or buy it. I decided that owning this film was the way to go because it gives more each time. As a portion of the script says:

Peter: It's not gonna be easy being you, is it?
Sully: Don't expect much from yourself in the beginning. I couldn't do everything at first, either.

thank you to the one time production company who managed to create magic for all history during the winter of 1993 whi8le filming and growing close in an experience that must have been beyond remarkable because the result, an outsiders look really, is a film that is only allowed a rating as high as five stars or superior excellence, when in fact there is no room to comment on how this motion picture will touch your heart, connect to your own life and change you for ever.
