What Part of the Second Amendment Don’t You Understand?

That’s the question posed by award-winning,
New York Times bestselling author, and professional firearms instructor, Larry Correia.
Bringing with him the practical experience that comes from having owned a high-end gun store—catering largely to law enforcement—and as a competitive shooter and self-defense trainer, Correia blasts apart the emotion-laden, logic-free rhetoric of the gun control fanatics who turn every “mass shooting” into a crazed call for violating your rights, abusing the Constitution—
and doing absolutely nothing to really fight crime.
In his essential new book,
In Defense of the Second Amendment, Correia reveals:
  • Why “gun-free” zones are more dangerous for law-abiding citizens
  • How the Second Amendment does indeed include your right to own an AR-15—and why that’s not an “outdated” concept
  • Why “red flag” laws don’t work, can be easily abused, and ignore a much more commonsensical approach to keeping guns out of the wrong hands
  • The insanity of “criminal justice reform” that frees dangerous criminals and “gun reform” that penalizes your right to self-defense
  • How we can return to a society that has a safe and healthy relationship with guns—as we had for most of our history
  • Correia’s promise: “Believe me, I’ve heard every argument relating to gun control possible. I can show you how to defend your rights.”

Urgent, informed, with vitally important information for whoever who owns a gun—or is thinking about owning a gun—or who cares about the preservation of our constitutional rights,
In Defense of the Second Amendment is a landmark book of enduring importance.

The more people shout him down, the more Correia is vindicated.
Protip for the layman: When people start writing books and essays to refute another book, BEFORE IT EVEN COMES OUT, you know the refuting party is trying to snow their audience.Larry mentioned in the book that there are people in this country within the media and government who refuse to portray the 2nd Amendment in a positive light, period, and try to shout down anybody else who does. The fact that those same people (refuting authors who wrote their takes before this was published, Camestros Felapton's negative breakdown of the book, etc.) are trying to do the exact same thing to -this- book, just proves Larry's assertion correct. Which should tell you he's onto something. This is an excellent book. Not only does it breakdown why the 2nd Amendment is important, the threats to it, and what regular gun owners can do about it, it also gives a basic roadmap of how to be a better gun owner. All explained through Larry's particular brand of wit, always laughing at his detractors' expense (sans swearing), and trying to keep things positive for gun owners, a whitepill for the endless nihilistic media blackpill, if you will.100% recommend to everybody. Buy a copy, buy a firearm, and while you first-timers are learning to shoot, learn more about your 2nd Amendment Rights!

I have read and enjoyed Mr. Correia's fiction for years, so I must admit that I am somewhat biased when it comes to his writing. That said, I found this book to be well written and a very easy read.

Nearly 50 years ago, I was a newbie Police Officer in a state which abhors firearms in private hands. Even then, I realized the moral and logical fallacies of the state's positions. Since then I moved to a state with a different attitude, and served over a quarter of a century as a police officer here. My experience and research on the topic have only solidified my strong belief in the wisdom of the Framers in including the Second Amendment in the Bill of Rights.

Mr. Correia's book is not some academic history of the Second Amendment, nor is it a legalistic approach or statistical approach to the subject, those exist aplenty. No, this book is a very readable refutation of the myriad fallacies that pop-up ad nauseam every time some wacko uses a firearm to kill a number of people. This is a book that should be mandatory reading for every Hollywierd celebrity, media-personality, and pseudo-journalist with zero knowledge of firearms and the realities of crime and violence who feels the need to pontificate on the subject of citizens being permitted to lawfully defend themselves and others.

I had just finished reading this book when a certain male teen once again popped up in the media bloviating ignorantly about firearms, regurgitating some of the very talking points of the anti-gunners that Mr. Correia refutes so well. He should have read this book before speaking, and the journalists who fawn over his every word would have done well to read it also.

If you are interested in why the Second Amendment is as valid today as it was nearly 250 years ago, this is a book you should read. I recommend it.

This book is unlike other books about our second amendment rights for several reasons.
1. It is highly entertaining. Yes, it has stats and graphs. But, it also has anecdotes and humorous analogies where the logic behind the data is explained. Data analysis is easily as important as the data itself and Larry knows how to do it right.
2. He presents the real arguments you will hear from gun grabbers. Presents them, and dismantles them with facts, logic, and humor.
3. He presents solutions to our current problems. The gun grabbers claim to want to solve certain problems so Larry shows how to solve those problems.

By the time you get to the end of the book you know the subject - and know it well.
I have referenced this book more than any other save the Bible itself.
I cannot recommend this book highly enough.

First things first. This book is entertaining, full of information, well referenced and footnoted, flows well and is generally a lovely book. It cheerfully takes apart the various misconceptions and outright lies that are constantly tossed about in the "debate" (debate is a strong word when one side refuses to listen to anything that challenges their uninformed beliefs) around guns in America. I'm a little torn on the tone of the book, a tone familiar to any who've read Larry Correia's blog, social media posts, or novels (which are awesome and you should buy them and read them BTW). Optimistically I wish there was a more even-handed version of this for those on the fence but tipping into the pro-gun control camp as they will probably get defensive at the rather condescending tone. Then I think of pretty much every social media or media or personal interaction I've seen or experienced on the subject and I'm not sure there are more than a hundred of such unicorns in the overall population so it's probably not worth tailoring a book towards them. So I can't fault the book for not focusing on that particular windmill.

As is usual. Larry Correia's writing style makes for an informative and entertaining read. Well laid out. Whether you agree or disagree with his stance on 2A he does a great job of discussing the 2nd amendment. Pro or anti 2A this is a great read. If you are pro 2A then this is a really well laid out book that will help you understand some of the anti sentiment and maybe help you better relate to others your stance. If you are anti 2A and afraid that he might change your mind from anti to pro 2A then what does that say about your beliefs to start with; or you can read to gain a better understanding of those that are pro 2A and maybe work on your arguments as to why they are wrong. Either way, you should probably give Larry some money and buy this book.

Get one thing clear-"In Defense of the Second Amendment" isn't a scholarly treatise citing obscure or not-so-obscure court rulings on the finer points of constitutional law.
I think that's a good thing.
Instead, it's a practical reasoned article on why gun ownership and the Second Amendment is important.
Instead of hard to access research papers and books from the local university library special collection, Correia freely cites hundreds of easily accessed web articles ranging from newspaper pieces to court ruling to peer reviewed entries from scholarly journals. I purchased the hard cover edition. My copy is now underlined and margin noted. Read time for me was about three hors total. Going back through the extensive, well cited endnotes will take much longer.
He also gives practical advice for new and experienced gun owners who either carry every day or are considering doing so.
Spoiler alert: Almost all of that advice boils down to three things. Get a good instructor. Understand the laws in your state. Practice.
One the whole, this very readable book is a welcome addition to the current debates over gun regulation and ownership. Highly recommend.

5.0 out of 5 stars A thorough defense of the right to self defense, not just the 2A
Reviewed in Canada on February 7, 2023
This book is slightly mis-titled. It is not merely a defense of the 2nd amendment to the USA constitution, it is a defense of the inherent right of anyone to own a gun, so that they might defend themselves (against attackers, invaders, or tyranny). Written in a relaxed style, Mr. Correia eloquenly squashes the shrill, bleated arguments against firearms ownership. Not only does he crush them, he brings the receipts. Fully footnoted, the book contains references to all the facts cited within. Frankly, as a combination, Larry's prose is best read alongside the raw might of numbers presented in John Lott's books ("The War on Guns" and "More Guns Less Crime"), which should be considered companion books to this one. In fact Dr. Lott is often referenced by Larry as his statistical analysis is comprehensive.

In Defense of the Second Amendment is a powerful book, breaking down into common sense speak the value of the inherent right of self defense, and the associated right to own the best tools for the job. He also goes into depth about the responsibility of taking charge of one's own defense, the need to get as much quality training as you can get, and that all of this is because when seconds count, help is generally minutes away.

I'm a Canadian, and this book sings to me as much as my glorious, freedom-loving neighbours to the south. I wish we had an equivalent protection for the right to bear arms here, and this book eloquently frames the argument in favour of that.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent explanation for the uninformed, stirring call for the prepared

As one of the few Brits who doesn’t look down my nose at Americans for exercising their right to self-defence, mainly as I read enough to know better, this book hits all the right points.

And unlike a great many books of the subject (sorry John Lott), it does a great job of balancing the statistics and arguments with a good dose of humour.

Highly recommend for anyone interested in the topic, and especially for those who are under the misapprehension that gun culture isn’t about safety. First rate read.

Goes through and demolishes the anti gun gun arguments thrown around by the US media in a no nonsense and easy to under way.
As Australian I can say with 100% accuracy that what Larry says about the control advocates is true these people don’t just want to take away your semi automatic rifles they ultimately want to take way your right of self defence.
