Produktbeschreibungen

I especially appreciated the subtle, low-key handling of the ideological differences among the German crew, with the one Hitler-worshipping Nazi vs his less-enthusiastic commander and colleague kept to small, mostly silent gestures. (At one point, the officer takes advantage of his injured crewmember's feverish sleep to unobtrusively use pages from the man's treasured Hitler-autographed "Mein Kampf" as more fuel for their small stove's fire.)
I enjoyed "Saving Private Ryan" and "The Longest Day" and, especially, "Band of Brothers" as much as anyone, but "Into the White" holds its own in my small collection of films about the war during which I was born and about which I heard stories from my parents and uncles. If you don't always demand a lot of explosions and yelling and blood everywhere in a war picture, then "Into the White" is highly recommended.
All my favourite films are extravagant fantasy blockbusters, so it's a tribute to this micro-budget production that I enjoyed it as much as I did. Although most of its action was confined to a space about the size of a double garage, the quality of the script, performances, cinematography and editing were such that my interest never flagged. There was tension aplenty, and humour, and pathos, and finally - or so it seemed to me - a lesson in human nature well worth learning and remembering.
Complaints? The blu-ray sleeve, with its dramatic image of aircraft and infantry absent from the film itself, might lead you to expect a different kind of film from what the disc actually offers. And I'd like to have seen a bit more of the film's beautiful Norwegian and Swedish locations. Oh, and I could have done without the script's handful of four-letter words - but then I am more than a bit tweedily old-fashioned.
The picture quality of the blu-ray is fine. The audio is just modest two-channel PCM, but this is entirely adequate to a soundscape not very different from a play's. About twenty minutes of German or Norwegian dialogue are given clear, legible subtitles. The only extras are trailers for three other low-budget war movies, although the film's closing captions tell us what happened to the film's protagonists after the events depicted.
If a good novel “informs the reader” rather than “tells the reader” then the same is surely true for films (or movies) and this is certainly the case here.
The film is outstanding. It left me open jawed thinking about it, and its relevance and for a long time after watching it.
When I Googled the film after watching it I realised the relevance of the “Scouser” on the cover of the DVD. I say “Scouser” because he evidently and surprisingly is not. But Gunner Smith (the Scouser) is, and I say this about the real man (be him from Liverpool or not) someone who we should all be proud of. But you will have to watch the film to see why.
Everyting about this film is near perfect. If, and only in the smallest way it is not quite perfect, and this is a minor criticism, it is because the characters are somewhat clichéd. Having said that, they may have been deliberately portrayed in such a way, and if so – it certainly works.
Cross Of Honour has very much the feel of a stage play, as for nine tenths of the film the cast are in one place and alone so it may not be for those who are looking for an action thriller. But for anyone who can appreciate a film with more intelligence than a Hollywood blockbuster then this could well be worth a look.
