Like Bruce Mccullough of the Kids In The Hall says, "greatest hits are for house wives and little girls."

Yeah, I have most of the original recordings, but for a one disc compilation this thing is PERFECT! Every damn song is a winner.

No need to get this one.If you want to start listening to this band, just pick up all of their albums in chronological order. This compilation can only mar you enjoyment of hearing their iconic albums in their entirety for the first time (this especially concerns the first album the better part of which is included here)

It’s not an easy thing to present a fully satisfying yet still clearly arranged anthology of this über-band, as has already been noted several times before. Here, the responsible compilers opted for the “Best of”-tag, adding some cash-making value by emphasizing the involvement of Lou Reed on the cover.
As cheap and rather disrespectful as that may seem, there is hardly any arguing about the music contained within. The bleak drone, always presented in a quite amateurish way, certainly is what made this band so special and ignored in the late 60s. Gritty stompers like “Run, run, run” and “I’m waiting for my man”, as well as the chaotic gospel-punk of “White light/white heat” are however contrasted by the pop-sensibility of mellow and lyrical tracks like “Femme fatale” and “Stephanie says”. Nico’s clear, yet emotionless voice, nonetheless, adds a disturbing element to even Reed’s most beautiful melodies.

Critics naturally will frown on the lack of epic classics such as “Venus in Furs” or “Sister Ray”, yet at least you get the endless and often misunderstood “Heroin”. However essential these more experimental tracks may be to the Velvet Underground catalogue, as an introduction for uninitiated listeners, this set of rather short and straight-forward material from the band’s classic period works pretty well.
Not all of the Velvets’ songs here are mighty deeds in my book and the inclusion of “Sweet nuthin’” would not have done any harm (even though it’s not penned by Reed), but “I’m beginning to see the light”.

Possibly Warhol’s best product.

Highlights: I’m waiting for the man, Femme fatale, Run run run, All tomorrow’s parties, White light/white heat, Stephanie says, Beginning to see the light, Sweet Jane, Rock and Roll
Lowlights: What goes on, Pale blue eyes

I am no expert by Velvet Underground, not a fan, I think from my independence and I regret that this compilation has disappointed me somewhat. Missing is incredible songs like "Sunday Morning" or the incredible "Venus in Furor" and yet the disc has a handful of stuffed and some as pessimistic as "White Light / White Heat" for this last is my candidate for worst song in the history of Rock.

After putting out two unreleased material sets in 1985 and 1986, after reprinting the first three albums, Verve/MGM decided to put out a Velvet Underground compilation, also capitalizing on Lou Reed's fortunate "comeback" with New York.

Two songs from Loaded (you can guess them both) are added to the MGM material to make the abstract complete; anyway most of the "best" is missing: Sunday Morning, Venus in Furs (!!), most of WLWH are nowhere to be found.

Apart from that, nothing truly offensive is included, so the record is very good; but the ones missing are way too much and too big to make it flow without regrets.

this was my first and only VU album for a long time.
the VU best album without Sunday Morning is unthinkable retrospectively.
