Wake Forest junior Elena Singer-Freeman and sophomore Cassandra Hung have been named 2024 Barry M. Goldwater Scholars. The two are among 438 college students from across the U.S. to receive the award for the 2024-25 academic year. Award winners are selected based on academic merit from a pool of more than 5,000 sophomores and juniors studying natural sciences, mathematics and engineering.
Wake Forest's Face to Face Speaker Forum invites world-renowned, influential voices to discuss a variety of topics including politics, arts and culture, and business and innovation. The 2024-25 season will feature Peyton Manning, Anderson Cooper, Jesmyn Ward, David Brooks and John Legend.
As the CEO of Coded by Kids, Danae Tilghman Mobley (’06) is working to make tech careers available to more children and young adults.
The Pulitzer Center has selected Melina Traiforos (‘25), English major and journalism and marketing communications minor, as Wake Forest’s 2024 Reporting Fellow.
Traiforos will receive a $3,000 stipend to report on Black maternal health disparities and inequalities low-income women face in the health care system. Her research project, titled “Black Mothers Are Dying. Here’s What NYC’s Doulas Are Doing About It,” will focus on the stories and outcomes behind an initiative taking place in New York City to address these inequalities.
Black women are nine times more likely to die from pregnancy-related complications than white women, according to the City of New York.
“The Pulitzer Center Reporting Fellowship will allow me to report on Ancient Song Doula Services, an organization that partners with NYC Mayor Eric Adams’ year-old Citywide Doula Initiative to provide free, non-medical support to under-resourced pregnant people in the Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Queens,” said Traiforos.
The Pulitzer Center awards fellowships to students from its Campus Consortium partners to cover a wide range of issues including climate change, education, human rights and global health. They receive funding and mentorship to report from the U.S. and around the world. The University’s journalism program also provides support for the fellowship.

Two recent Wake Forest graduates have been selected for the postbaccalaureate Intramural Research Training Award offered by the National Institutes of Health (NIH IRTA).
Tahjanee Givens, a Stamps Scholar from Fuquay Varina, North Carolina, is majoring in psychology, and politics and international affairs.
Eric Wang, a Reynolds Scholar from Cary, North Carolina, is a biology major.
As part of this funded postbaccalaureate program, Givens and Wang will undertake research full-time with the NIH. Givens will support ongoing studies to develop effective mental health programs to improve adolescent depression and concurring mental health challenges with the Section on Development and Affective Neuroscience at the National Institute of Mental Health.
Wang will be conducting neurobiology research in the Jensen Lab at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences.
