Former Tennessee football coach and athletics director Phillip Fulmer was hospitalized and underwent a medical procedure Thursday morning.

Fulmer's family released a statement through UT about his condition.

"Phillip underwent a medical procedure Thursday at UT Medical Center," the statement said. "He is alert and in good spirits and will remain at the hospital for a few days. We are thankful for the outstanding care he’s receiving, and we also appreciate the prayers and concern of so many who have reached out.

"He is looking forward to cheering on the Vols as they kick off another exciting season!"

Fulmer, 72, is the second-winningest coach in UT football history with a 152-52 record in 17 seasons. He led the Vols to the 1998 national championship and two SEC titles.

He served as athletics director from December 2017 to January 2021.

Fulmer was also a 1972 graduate, football player and assistant coach at UT, spending more than 40 years at his alma mater. In 2012, he was elected to the College Football Hall of Fame.
