Neighborhood: Djurgården & Djurgårdsbrunn
The island of Djurgården and its northern mainland extension, Djurgårdsbrunn, impress with a mix of nature and an abundance of museums, while being located in walking distance to Stockholm’s city center. Djurgården not only invites visitors to take endless walks through a beautiful park landscape without having to leave the city, but also offers an incredible range of entertainment facilities, such as an open air museum which specializes in the Swedish way of life pre-industrialization, the renowned Vasa Museum with its legendary sailing ship, and Sweden’s most famous amusement park Gröna Lund, which is more than a 100 years old.

    Cute animals, beautiful houses
I've had a prejudice against Skansen for some time, thought it would be boring and nothing to see. But I really enjoyed it. Came with my boyfriend and his family, and we all enjoyed it very much. The weather was amazing, all the flowers were blooming, and we got to see bears playing in the water... something I've never seen before. Plus a lynx sleeping in a log, the cutest baby reindeer ever, etc. And all the old houses are so pretty. We didn't have time to stay so long, unfortunately. Will come back another day.

    Something for Everyone
Many cities have some type of historical park and buildings like this one, but few can match it for range of time periods, breadth of structures and activities with overall quality of delivery. The only advice I would give is don’t try and see it all in one day, there is too much to see and appreciate in one session. Really nice mix for all ages here.

    Essential for visitors to Stockholm
Skansen is the world's oldest open air museum, and in keeping with the open air philosophy, there are exhibits from all over Sweden representing Swedish life from the 18th-early 20th Centuries, and friendly history reenactors. There is also a good collection of animals from the Nordic region (moose, reindeer, bears etc.) in good sized enclosures. There are also many little gardens and allotments. Craftsmen and women make products from blown glass to hand made pottery which are for sale. There are excellent views over the water to Stockholm from Skansen's location on Djurgården. The highlight for me was the small 1930s area of the "Town Quarter" with authentic ironmonger and dairy shop, with the ironmonger's house behind. I spent hours here and didn't see everything by far. Fortunately they offer yearly entrance passes so you can return more than once in the year if you wish. Excellent.

Must visit in Stockholm if weather good
Really well laid out historical buildings with knowledgeable and friendly staff in period costume. Plenty for families as well as adults. Plenty of cafes as well as a main restaurant. Need a good half day to really enjoy ambling around and discussing history with the staff.

    Skansen - Review
A place that should be visited if you travel to Stockholm, has a lot of different activities / locations and most likely you will find something to your liking and be ready to walk around. The few interactions I had with the staff... they were friendly. I believe that for some of the activities, there is an extra cost, but most of the ones I saw were included in the ticket (as a plus, if you can go for Midsummer - as was my case - even better). There's places to eat and buy souvenirs as well. Being open air, is probably better to go when the weather is nice.

We visited Skansen on 27/06/2023 and it was a wonderful morning spent going through the living museum. All the staff were really friendly and knowledgable on the areas which they occupied. Would definitely recommend partaking in the guided tour of the Manor House (make sure you get your ticket an hour before hand as there are limited spaces though!) and the tour guide - I think she said her name was Wilma - was fabulous. She had a wealth of knowledge on the family and history of this building, and answered every question presented to her by the group. There was a great variety of food options available (meatballs with mash and cream sauce were delicious and the seagulls thought so also when they pinched one!). All in all this museum is a definite must visit on your trip to Stockholm

Great for families, fine for couples/adults if you have spare time
Looks amazing for kids! Some really interactive experiences and would probably be a full day out for a family However for couples/adults it might not be worth doing unless you have spare time, avoid if it's raining! There's only a few animal enclosures and half of the animals were hiding away, aquarium is also nice but nothing out of the ordinary. Very tailored to kids and families

    Fabulous open-air museum!
You are spoilt for choices of museums in Stockholm! Skansen is a great one for walking around and we had a beautiful sunny day for this with tulips in full bloom. I loved the little buildings dismantled from original settings and transported to current location - bakery (which bakes), book binder, glass blowing ll were good sights to behold as was the church which stood out from it's location. A peaceful place for solo or walks with family and friends.

    So much to see
I visited Skansen on my own and loved wandering round exploring the many aspects of the park. On entering I was given a map, which was tricky to follow initially so I followed the signposts. I loved the houses/shops, especially the ones where there were guides to explain aspects of the place. I learned about the intricate wall decoration of houses of landowners and where their money came from, the preserving of lemons for winter by the cooks in the manor house, the creation of an outfit for a Sami boy about to turn 15yrs… A surprise for me was there was also a small animal farm on site and a zoo. There is also an aquarium but it costs extra. I loved the zoo, especially seeing the Nordic animals. The four bears were active and playful which was fascinating to watch. I saw a wolverine which I didn’t even know was a real animal until then! There were also wild red squirrels running around the farmhouses. There was also an exhibition on the Baltic Sea and how we can take care of it which was interesting but was aimed at children, so had less information than I would have liked. I wandered for nearly 3 hours on my own, so with my family I would have taken much longer and could easily have spent a good part of a day there as there were play parks and picnic spots. I went on a sunny morning in July and although the park was very busy, it didn’t feel too crowded to be able to see what I wanted to see.

    Good open air museum
While the ABBA and Vasa museum are utmost priorities when visiting Stockholm, and if you still have time, go to the Skansen open air exhibit depicting Swedish life history . My daughter went to the Zoo and liked the experience. You can have Fika inside as well several times.

We loved Skansen! It's a marvelous open-air museum and cultural center in Stockholm and doubles as a world-class zoo. The center was founded in 1891 on the island of Djurgården. Skansen consists of historical buildings and dwellings that provide a sense of Swedish history. The Zoo includes only indigenous Scandinavian animals, including farm animals, which are part of Swedish history. It's a great choice to blend these two cultural entities and you are the beneficiary. it seems like an obvious choice to house these animals on this particular site, close to the city center. There are also beer and snack wagons and shops if you get weary of trekking through the marvelous scenery:)

Highly recommend!

We visited during winter, when many of the workshops were closed. However, the introductory talk for the reindeer and the playful lynx family was very rewarding! A great experience with a nice environmental awarness touch in the Baltic science centre. I would highly recommend this place for adults but also families, since there is also a childrens museum and several activities. O would only advise to plan a visit during the summer.

The world's oldest open-air museum is a like time machine, allowing you to travel back to the early 18th century. Situated on an island in the heart of Stockholm, long ago used as the king's hunting grounds, it is a place I never fail to visit when in Sweden.
The collection of old farms and crafts let you drift away to days long gone. Just enjoy the beauty or immerse yourself in the history of Sweden. Listen to stories about how life was lived or visit the many local animals living there. It is a stunningly beautiful park with fantastic views over Stockholm.

We came for Midsommar and it was a lovely way to spend it, especially as the weather was so nice. This was obviously extremely touristy and the line to get in was amazingly long, so be prepared if you go at the same time of year.

Inside it was also very busy and was sometimes hard to see what was going on, e.g. raising the maypole, but it was a great atmosphere. There was lot to see and do (e.g. zoo) and it was lovely to walk around soaking in the festivities.

In particular, the little houses and gardens and people in traditional clothes were a highlight. The people playing instruments in a little wooded grove was also lovely.

This is an okay place if you have children but for a group of 4 adults it was pretty boring. The animals were not visible (it was warm the day we went) and the houses are ho hum. We did not have reservations in advance for the interactive activities and they were all full (we were there in the peak of the tourist season). It is overpriced and they charge extra for the funicular to avoid the long climb from entrance to the exhibits. We only lasted an hour, our least favorite activity in Stockholm during our vacation. Very commercial. Skip it, visit the real museums or do something else unless you have young children.

Skansen is a very great place to spend a day while in Stockholm, whether you're with kids or without.
The historic buildings are beautiful and there's boards with interesting info. If you go there in high-season, there's markets, food stands, restaurants and of course loads of other visitors. We visited off-season and there were people, but not so many. Few of the actors were still there, telling you stuff about the houses and tgere where possibilities to get coffee and eat. There's a small fairground for little kids too.
The farm animal part of the park is perfect for kids.
There's a rather large part where the native northern animals live in spacious and well structured enclosures. Near the entrance there's a small zoo with exotic animals, for which you pay extra.
We'd definitely go there again.

We visited on Weds, May 12th -- amid throngs of school groups. Almost every building was closed. A handful opened at 11am. The glass blower was so disappointing. A group of young children stood there watching him make ring after ring without saying a word. Their teacher tried to get him to talk, but his answers were monosyllabic. When one child asked if he were going to make anything other than glass rings, he answered, "Later." The aquarium is not included in the price. It is an extra $15 per person. The funicular is not included in the price; it is an extra $7 per person. Basically only the paid attractions were open. I went here about 10 years ago and was eager to return; that was a mistake. First I would recommend only coming from June-Sept. The people working there said most things didn't open until June. This is not obvious from their website or from their pricing. It is nice to walk about and look at the old buildings, but I was expecting so much more.

We had a full day at Skansen after having visited 10 years ago and thoroughly enjoying the lemurs. This time we allowed more time and saw the whole place - but the lemur exhibit was still our favorite! There was a one month old baby that was just a bundle of energy and we easily spent an hour just in that one part of the park. We enjoyed seeing the other animals - the moose and the reindeer, the barnyard animals, and we enjoyed seeing the glassblowers as well.

Lunch in the restaurant at the top of the hill was surprisingly good, but got awfully crowded when the rain started and everyone who'd been outside crowded in for cover.

There are many open air museums in the region, but this claims to be the world's oldest. It's on an island, but easily and cheaply accessed by a short ferry ride from the center of Stockholm.

Although one of the oldest open air museums it was a little “tired” during our late December visit. A lot of areas were closed off and not many people around in traditional costumes as it says are generally the case. We did visit in the afternoon and it does get dark early but would have expected a fell experience (apart from some zoo animals being in hibernation) . Some areas were very interesting but others looked like they needed some work doing on them and tidying up a little . For a museum with such a good reputation it was a little disappointing. Maybe the wrong time of year to visit and guess it would look better in the summer and the light!

We live in Stockholm and therefore Skansen is a predictable destination for a family with 2 smaller kids. We go there, like, every 3 months. Museum is probably great, but we are always there for 1)zoo 2)”tivoli” (attractions and carousels for the youngest kids aged 2-6 years, I think, but they work only on summer). Baby bears these year are truly amazing! Annual card paid itself after the second visit. Recommend!
