Biography

Matt Murphy was born on December 29, 1929 in Sunflower, Mississippi. I 1948, at the age of 21, Murphy began playing guitar for Howlin' Wolf and harp player Junior Parker was in the band with him.

By 1952 Matt Murphy had begun a long association with Memphis Slim which would last into the early 1960s. It was during this time that he became known for his very fast and intricate blues riffs which would effect the way rock and roll would sound.

In the late 1970s Murphy joined The Blues Brothers and assumed the name of Matt "Guitar" Murphy. He starred in both the films Blues Brothers and Blues Brothers 2000 and would perform with the band on and off for the next few decades.

In 1982 he began performing with his own band and continues to do so to this day, although a stroke he suffered while on stage in 2003 has limited the number of shown he performs annually. He also will sometimes perform as a member of The Mohegan Sun All Stars, a supergroup comprised of well-known session musicians.
