Award-winning author Valerie Wilson Wesley launches a thrilling new mystery series set in New Jersey, featuring a multicultural cast, and starring a caterer-turned-realtor with the gift of second sight...

In the first of a thrilling new series, one woman's extraordinary psychic gift plunges her already-troubled present into chaos--and puts her future in someone's deadly sights...

Until now, Odessa Jones' inherited ability to read emotions and foretell danger has protected her. But second sight didn't warn her she would soon be a widow--and about to lose her home and the catering business she's worked so hard to build. The only things keeping Dessa going are her love for baking and her sometimes-mellow cat, Juniper. Unfortunately, putting her life back together means taking a gig at an all-kinds-of-shady real estate firm run by volatile owner Charlie Risko...

Until Charlie is brutally killed--and Dessa's bullied co-worker is arrested for murder. Dessa can't be sure who's guilty. But it doesn't take a psychic to discover that everyone from Charlie's much-abused staff to his long-suffering younger wife had multiple reasons to want him dead. And as Dessa follows a trail of lies through blackmail, dead-end clues, and corruption, she needs to see the truth fast--or a killer will bury her deep down with it.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Praise for A GLIMMER OF DEATH

“There's crispness in Wesley’s plotting and sparkle in the supporting characters, notably Dessa’s feisty, elderly aunts – both possessed of extrasensory gifts –  and a possible love interest in ex-cop Lennox Royal. There’s also something oddly comforting about a Black woman in fiction who isn’t weighed down by societal pathology and who can appreciate a good glass of Merlot and reruns of “Downton Abbey” as much as the next woman. In between heavier mystery fare, this unicorn of  a Black cozy is a welcome palate cleanser.” -
The Los Angeles Times

“The creator of Newark private eye Tamara Hayle dials back the wisecracks and bumps up the paranormal hints to launch a new series featuring a widowed African American realtor whose workplace is a hot mess.”- Kirkus Reviews

“Widow Odessa Jones, the psychically gifted narrator of this strong series launch from Wesley, can see glimmers, auralike colors that correspond to a person’s emotional state…Wesley perfectly captures her protagonist’s emotions, including the lingering melancholy she feels for her late husband…Readers will hope to see a lot more of kind, empathetic Odessa.”- Publishers Weekly

A Noir Cozy Fusion
This first in the promising new mystery series from Valerie Wilson Wesley is not a candyland pastel hued cozy, but a gritty lead dusted mystery washed with shades of navy, charcoal, muddy grays and browns. Protagonist Odessa Jones still grieves a year after her husband’s unexpected death, their nascent catering business now on hold. To make ends meet, Jones survives as a real estate agent working at an office filled with coworkers who are living on the edge. Some keep to themselves while others slickly work the angles for quick material success. When their toxic boss Charlie Risko is murdered, plenty of suspects emerge.Jones’s good sense and discretion serve as a beacon for her co-workers as they confide in her. When one is arrested, he entreats Jones to help him. Entrusted with their information, the observant Jones starts to put the pieces together when she discovers their tawdry dealings and a motive for Risko’s murder.Sounds noir-ish but not so fast. Jones possesses the gift of “second sight,” a psychic ability she is learning to wrangle. She loves to bake (recipe included!), enjoys a close relationship with her eccentric and charming Aunt Phoenix, and embarks on a friendship - and possible future love interest - with retired detective Lennox Royal, owner of the local barbecue joint. And Jones shares her home with her cat, Juniper. Definitely a cozy.Wesley’s deft skill as a writer make this fusion “noir cozy” work. While Charlie Risko’s murder and the suspects veer toward noir/hard boiled, the cozy elements bring hope and humor and Jones herself is a winsome character to root for.

I haven't read Valerie Wilson Wesley works for a good while. She is one of the best mystery writers around. I truly enjoyed A Glimmer of Death. It kept me guessing until the end! It was a wonderful read!

This book had a quirky feel to it like every cozy mystery that I’ve read. The characters were all such strange people. I had a fleeting thought about the villain, but I convinced myself that I got it wrong. When the truth was revealed, I was surprised that I hadn’t figured it out. This wasn’t an amazing page turner, but it was a solid read. I think I’ll give the next book in the series a chance.

This is an excellent story. One never knows what is behind the facade we wear around others. The characters are filled with life, the plot is straight forward an true, and the premise is listen to your gifts, even if they are only your heart and mind. I truly do recommend this book

Well written, though the ending did not justify the build up throughout the novel. I guessed who the killer was halfway through the book. I was hoping I was wrong and that I'd be pleasantly surprised. Looking gorwsrf to continuing the series.
