This is a most excellent collection for anyone who appreciates Dire Straits, even if you already have previous releases of Alchemy Live and On The Night, which I do. The expanded versions of those albums, the addition of earlier live performances, and the superior production and sound quality, from start to finish, make this well worth the money. It’s interesting and enjoyable to experience how the band’s concert performances evolved from those early days in 1978 to the On Every Street tour that came just before the band called it a night. It’s all quite good!

Can’t stop playing Tunnel of Love, an added track to the On the Night compilation. Meant to be played LOUD!!! The remastered sound on this set makes you feel like you’re part of the audience.
A bargain at the current price. Snatch it while you can. Like all Rhino/Warner packages, once it’s out of print you’ll have to pay inflated prices on the secondary market.

I got this boxset (it was a late Christmas present) because the albums were remastered. All of the Dire Straits CDs that were originally released on vinyl had horrible sound quality. I found the CD version of Alchemy so bad that I didn't enjoy listening to it. On the Night didn't sound very good either, but better than Alchemy. The best sounding live CD was Live at the BBC...and in general the BBC recordings aren't the greatest from any band.

The other reason to get this (even if you already had the original CDs) is that there is a lot of bonus material that wasn't released before and some stuff that was always hard to get. The original On the Road was a single CD but came in a dual CD case for the addition of the "encore" bonus disc. This Encore disc was something you were supposed to order separately but I could never find it.

The Live at the Rainbow show is included here as a first time official release. There are bootlegs out there of this show.

So, why do I only give this 4 stars?

-Most of the remastering is great, especially on Alchemy, but I still find On the Road to be noisy and jumbled in parts. It is one of those albums when you turn it off, you get a sense of peace, like your brain just recovered from a sensory overload.

-Most of the best stuff has been released before. The vinyl version of Alchemy has good enough sound quality, although I think the remastering on the boxset is much better.

-Dire Straits is not the greatest live band. Some of the live versions of some of the songs are great. But, many songs done live are similar to the studio versions but the studio versions are better. You just get noisier versions of the songs with poorer sound quality.

-Much of the Live at the Rainbow album sounds just like the studio albums (but there are some great moments on it).

-I would say about 50% of the songs are fantastic but I have to sit through the other 50% that I don't want to hear more than once. I will probably rip the songs I like and get rid of the boxset.

This series of shows is long overdue and a panacea for Dire Straits fans. Alchemy is here in full, including Industrial Disease and Twisting By The Pool, two songs not included on the original album. Portobello Belle is here as a 7 minute plus version, and the running order is restored so Telegraph Road is in the encore. Great mix and great sound make this a triumph. On The Night remastered is a full show from the On Every Street Tour and includes Tunnel Of Love and Telegraph Road, among other added songs. The result is an outstanding listen. The bonus show from the Rainbow shows the Straits at their early best. Highly recommended!!

Got it today. I listened to "Rainbow" Disc 2 first. Then I listened to Disc "BBC", and now I'm listening to Disc "Encores." I am super pleased w/ the sound. I don't listen to a lot of recorded live music, but for a live Rock album, I couldn't be more impressed. Right now, "The Bug" is playing. It's GREAT. I would think that most Dire Strait's fans will very quicky consider this Boxed set a "must have." It's so easy to sit here for hours listening to this great band! Made loud to be played loud!

Finally all of the live music available from Dire Straits and then some. 8 CDs all remastered with unreleased music and extended versions of other cuts from 1978 to 1992 when DR were one of the greatest bands in rock. It’s a small box similar to the complete studio and Mark Knopfler box sets. Hi-res so you’ll appreciate the improved sound if your system is revealing enough. Just received today the 1st day it’s available in the US in excellent condition. If you love Dire Straits this is a must have with 8 discs for $52.99. Highly Recommended! Peace, love and music!
