On a serious note, the actual book is much nicer than expected. Great quality!
However, my main reason for the review is this: The first story in this book is 'My Immortal,' written and published by Tara Gilesbie on FanFiction.net, beginning in March of 2006. The following three stories, 'My Immortal 2: Wake Me Up Inside,' 'My Immortal 2: Fangz 4 De Venom' and 'A Vampre Wil Nevr Hurt You' cannot be confirmed to be written by Tara.
The story we know she wrote has so many spelling errors and inconsistencies, that you can almost pick up her pattern. In fact, there are certain instances where it seems like Tara is winking at the reader, such as calling Sirius Black, Harry's 'dogfather.'
But the subsequent stories I listed take the errors to such an extreme that it comes across that it has to be a different person. There is an ellipsis that lasts thirteen pages in one instance, and that is just one of the tamer reasons why the sequels seems to be written by a troll(s). Part of what makes 'My Immortal' so endearing and keeps me coming back, is the idea that this was written with the utmost sincerity. It's difficult to believe while reading that the first time, but even after all this time, no one had come forward to take credit and has been confirmed as the real Tara Gilesbie.
The final two stories are written and co-written by Raven, who is Tara's friend and plays a role in the editing of the early chapters of 'My Immortal.' When Raven was helping Tara the spelling, grammar and cohesiveness of the story is better. But the plot is still nonsensical. Once Raven distances herself from the project, that is when the story truly becomes the train wreck it is known for.
Seasoned readers of the story will know about what unfolds between the two of them in the author notes and the consequences their relationship has on the story. Which, in a way, is just as interesting as wondering how this all came together in the first place.
It's ironically charming in the fact that it's so ridiculous you can't possibly believe it's real. The characters are all awful and essentially carbon copies of each other. But the terrible grammar and ridiculous things that these characters do will leave you with the best quotes to use. This fanfiction has made my work environment better by providing my co-workers and I with stupid things to re aloud while closing.
This book will inspire you to write better stories than this. But worst of all you may fall in love with Ebony by the end, just like everyone else.
