Luise had to leave the duchy in the autumn of 1824 and Alexander followed her. They married in 1826 and resided in St Wendel in the principality Lichtenberg, in what is now the Saarland. After Luises death, Duke Ernst sold the little principality to Prussia and Alexander became a Prussian officer. In 1833 he married Marie Therese von Carlowitz who bore him three children.
