Neighborhood: Ipanema
Ipanema is considered Rio's crown jewel. It offers the best view of the sunset from Arpoador and is inspiration for the legendary song, “The Girl from Ipanema.” Ipanema is an upscale area, home to many high-end restaurants and luxury shops, many of which can be found on the charming Garcia d'Ávila Avenue. The neighbourhood is very rich culturally, housing many art galleries that show contemporary art. There is also a great variety of nightlife in the neighbourhood, which buzzes with many options for every taste.

Well it would be rude to not visit…..
Well it would be rude not to visit after hearing it in a song from when I was a child. Clean looking with nice pedestrian walkway next to it. It was great watching all the hand-gliders making there way down from the mountain. Sadly we didn’t stop long as we were part of a group.

    A Beautiful Beach
An excellent beach for relaxing or for engaging in beach sports. We arrived around 10am and it was not busy. The beach had been cleaned so that there was no rubbish or seaweed to be seen. There were a number of ‘Pop Up’ bars close by, not to mention the many beach sellers who will approach you, but leave when you say NO! We did make some purchases of Sunglasses, sweetcorn and drinks. I had the best ever Pina Colada in a pineapple followed by a massage on the beach. A lovely beach which has so much to offer and more preferable than Copacabana beach!

No visit to Rio is complete without a visit here
No visit to Rio is complete without at least one afternoon on the beach at Ipanema. The one where the girl's from is a feast for the eyes. the glorious two brothers mountains to the west and the rocky outcrop of Arpoador luring sunset viewers to its east frame a paradise, conveniently labeled for your taste. Each kilometer has a numbered lifeguard stand: posto 8 is more families, posto 9 has the boys that generally arent interested in the girls from Ipanema, further up you'll find lots of football circles etc. Ipanema's not as developed as Copacabana so don't expect a zillion fast restaurants but there are enough kiosques plus folks strolling the beach hawking drinks and snacks so that you don't need to lug it all with you. Likewise chair and umbrella rentals are inexpensive. The biggest surprise you'll get is when you decide to cool off by taking a dip. The water is cold!

Outstanding food, views, and service! Alex was fantastic!
We had an absolutely outstanding dinner at Ipanema. In fact, it was so great we ate there twice in our short west end stay. Alan was our server, and his attitude was fantastic. He made it a fun experience. Our table was out on the patio, and the views cannot be surpassed elsewhere. The food was spectacular, and the sunset was amazing. Thank you Alex! We'll be back!

    A nice city beach
This is a lovely city beach, nicer than Copacabana as it is less busy (still really busy though). Sea is a bit rough and no swimming zones so take care if you enter. Lots of people selling things. Sunbeds or space to relax on the sand. Very pretty with the sea, beach and mountain backdrop, quite unusual.

Stunning beach , which we had the fortune to have a hotel looking over every day and night. Its more quite than Cococabana beach a few places to eat and drink near by , and lovely for a walk along the beach or walkway, floodlit at night for volley ball and football . people actually on this beach running and doing exercise very early in the morning.

    Another superb beach in Rio
Must say it has the look and feel of Copacabana but much quieter. Whilst not as lively as its sister beach it still has all required for a great beach day. Starting to underhand that Rio is. City of amazing beaches. I preferred Copacabana but my wife preferred Ipanema. Both very good.

    Less Touristy beach
Ipanema Beach is way less tasty in Copacabana and right around the corner from Copacabana. It’s worth visiting just because it’s more pristine and less populated. A lot of the locals come here to go to the beach.

Great to walk with a good bar and restaurant scene.
Ipanema Beach is the little sister to Copacabana but is within easy walking distance. While Copacabana is lined with hotel Ipanema is lined with Apartments and residences. When we were there the beach was less crowded but still a large corniche to walk along although far less beach bars to frequent. Ipanema does have a vibrant restaurant and bar scene a few blocks off the seafront and we ended up eating and drinking there most nights despite our hotel being on Copacabana.

The famous song by Antonio Carlos Jobim is just one of many inspirations for a visit to Ipanema Beach. Facing the Atlantic Ocean to the South, you may start your day with a refreshing sunrise beach walk and close it with a spectacular sunset, with a cold beer or a Caipirinha in your hand. What a life!

Loved coming to this beach early in the morning when it is quieter and all you hear is the sound of the waves against the sand. It was nice taking a stroll along the beach while watching people taking their dogs out for a run on the beach. The sand is so fine and cool to the feet in the morning. And you ca see a mountain on the right hand side of the beach.

Beautiful view, the way they design the floor it's great. Believe it or not the best time to visit is in the evening and night because the parties never stop. If you want to have fun visit at night you will not regret it .

Beautiful beach, great crowd and wonderful scenery. This is the best beach in Rio in my opinion. The beach is surrounded by mountains where you can watch the beautiful sunset. Also, plenty of vendors with food and beverages including alcoholic beverages. It also has food ve do that walk the beach along with outdoor bars/restaurants on the beach. Great place to spend your days.

Beautiful beach with stunning panoramic views of the mountainous shoreline. If you're going during the busy summer months, be sure to get there early and grab your spot. Beach starts filling up quickly, early in the morning. Also, you CANNOT miss the sunset each night. Breathtaking. Also, if you're looking for some fun waves to swim in, this is your beach. Bigger waves than I was expecting, which I loved!

I have to say I prefer Impanema to Copa because the water is closer and the footpath is higher over the beach giving you a better view. Most of the action is at the Arproador end with market stalls, food and drink and the outdoor gym. The sunset can be watched from most of the beach and there is also some nice little spots with great views going up the hill at the other end. Of course volley ball is played all along the beach as well.

A beautiful long sandy beach made famous by the Frank Sinatra song and it’s distinctive paving tiles. You will find hundreds of tourists and locals alike flocking here daily to enjoy the cooler air and the sea. Loads of places to stop and have a cold drink or coconut.

I truly believe that Ipanema beach is better for you if you enjoy a slightly quieter day on the beach. Copacabana has much more to do and it is for that reason, a whole lot more popular, however Ipanema is quieter a bit more intimate. Still, there is plenty to do at Ipanema and it is nonetheless another huge beach.

Ipanema had a different feel than Copacabana. Initially, it seemed more upscale. We walked the beach for a while and took some pictures. We sent a picture to my mom because she likes the song “Girl From Ipanema”. There were lots of street vendors and lots of people around. Ipanema Beach isn’t as deep as Copacabana so it seems like it is more crowded. Before going to Brazil, I read that Copacabana was more rowdy that Ipanema but we felt it was the other way around. There were a lot of young people drinking and being very loud. We preferred Copacabana and were glad we chose a hotel there.
