Listening to Loeb's Reissue of her legendary (in her own mind) Purple Tape, a tape she sold in her shows back when she was a starving artist, an unknown singer songwriter doing little "gigs", I was struck by how much she has evolved since those days.
Ha, Kidding!
She hasn't changed. Trace her music and her voice from this tape to the new song in her Best of compilation. Yes, the said song features a full band but the core of it is still Loeb's songwriting. There has been little change, little to none. That's fine by me actually. She's got charm to spare.
Her voice too has neither deepened nor gotten higher, hasn't gotten raspier or shriller. It has maintained a clarity that's rich and pleasant.
The ten songs archived here are what you'd expect. They're tuneful, pretty, introspective, melancholic and perhaps more lyrically interesting than her later works. The more known songs ("Hurricane", "Guessing Game", "It's Over", "Do You Sleep" etc..) are the ones that stand out. I hear "Do You Sleep" and I'm teleported back to the nineties, loving that video wherein she was washing some clothing or whatever. It's also informative.
There's also a quite engaging interview with Lisa. Engaging, I guess only to her fans. I'm a fan though and I love hearing her talk about her days with Elizabeth Mitchell (of Ida), singing together in the duo, Liz and Lisa, chatting about the songs she's written, the meanings, her so called evolution as an artist. I could listen to her talk about a shoe or whatever. Her voice is great. Listening to her explain the origins of her songs and chord progressions, I have to say she's an accomplished acoustic guitarist and she actually thinks a lot about the chords she uses in her songs, how to layer it to make it more interesting. If I've made the mistake of calling her compositions simple before, I apologize. The girl is the real deal. The barebones approach for Purple Tape only makes this all the more clear.
A must for her fans.
