on all the movies I purchase through Amazon, I will let my 5 star ratings be my evaluation, John Wayne never made a bad movie, nor Jimmy Stewart, and even the WWII hero (Audie Murphy) makes fine westerns Gary Cooper has a charm about him that no other cowboy can match, so if you are into westerns, you will like all of these, if I give less than 4 or 5 star rating, then either the movie was awful or there is something wrong with the dvd, and in the latter case I will write about that.

Bought this for the superior FURY AT SHOWDOWN..Along came Jones is a good movie too, but Gerd Oswald (who directed most of The best OUTER LIMITS episodes) inventive direction, superior camera movement and composition, not to mention his getting a great pair of performances from John Derek and Nick Adams...An 8 day masterpiece shot by Oscar winning cinematographer Joseph LaShelle (LAURA) and a nice music score from the always undervalued Harry Sukman.

This is a very cheaply made film, just like a typical B-western. Though the artists are supposed to be good and usually are, the result is "tepid", as Michael Pitts says in his Western Movies book. It was filmed almost totally in studio which shows all the time. Perhaps Cooper's money run out (He was a producer). This film is also amazingly violent in order to be comedy. Number of killings is high and even Cooper gets badly battered. Along Came Jones was neither amusing or exciting. I could watch it, though, because all kind of things were happening without breaks. Cooper's westerns are very uneven. Some are great, some just average or poor like this one. - Fury at Showdown I have not watched yet. I will review it later.

主として廉価なパブリック・ドメイン(権利切れ)作品DVDを発売し、独自の販路(米Walmartなど)で販売してきたヴィデオ会社米TGG Directが、米MGM/UA(米20世紀フォックスが委託販売)から正規ライセンスを受けて発売した西部劇2本立て。ゲーリー・クーパー主演の『無宿者』(1945)とジョン・デレク主演の"Fury at Showdown"(1957)という、ともに正統派とは一線を画したひねりのある作品だ。特に、後者作品は、初DVD化ということもあり、西部劇ファンには堪らない。

●邦題『無宿者』"Along Came Jones"

あてもなく、気ままに西部を旅するメロディ・ジョーンズ(ゲーリー・クーパー)と相棒のジョージ(ウィリアム・デマレスト)は、ペインヴィルという町に流れ着く。早速、旅の疲れを取ろうと、町をぶらつく2人だったが、ジョーンズの鞍に刻印された「MJ」のイニシャルを見た町中の人間の顔色が変わる。実は、町の人間は、ジョーンズを指名手配の凶悪な強盗モンテ・ジャラッド(ダン・デュリエ)と勘違いしているのだった…。

『捜索者』を始め、数々の西部劇の原作者、脚本家として有名なアラン・リ・メイの原作"Useless Cowboy"の映画化作品。ベテラン、ナナリー・ジョンソンが脚色し、スチュアート・ヘイスラーが監督している。長いキャリアの中でも、クーパー自身がプロデューサーも兼ねた唯一の作品としても有名。ヒロイン役のロレッタ・ヤングは、ちょうど妊娠中で、乗馬シーンでは細心の注意を払ったという。

西部劇のヒーロー像というものをことごとく壊した異色の西部劇だ。浮世離れして、拳銃の扱いも下手くそ(大事な時に、手から落としてしまう無様！)ながら、そのくせ変な正義感もあるという「空気の読めない」主人公は、まるで、クーパーが『オペラハット』で演じたディーズ氏が西部に迷い込んで来たかのよう。あえて、彼がそれまで演じて来た正統的な西部のヒーローを否定して、間逆のどこまでも頼りない主人公にしたということは、製作にも携わっているクーパーの意欲の表れなのだろう。クーパーの素朴さと茶目っ気あるユーモアが生かされた主人公だ(ベテラン脚本家ナナリー・ジョンソンも、クーパーの持ち味を存分に生かしてキャラクターを膨らませたに違いない)。そして、そのクーパーのパーソナリティが、作品全体を支配して、のんびりととぼけた味になっている。次第に彼に惹かれていく女性を軽妙に演じるヤング、いつもながらの憎々しい悪党を演じるダン・デュリエ、コメディ・リリーフの相棒を演じるデマレストの配置も素晴らしい。一見、捉えどころないが、じわりじわりと不思議な魅力が出てくる作品だ。

●"Fury at Showdown"

正当防衛で人を殺して服役しているブロック・ミッチェル(ジョン・デレク)に出所する日が訪れる。ブロックは、弟のトレイシー(ニック・アダムス)の出迎えを受け、故郷の町ショウダウン・クリークへと戻る。しかし、彼の服役中、殺された人間の兄である弁護士のチャド・デアシー(ゲージ・クラーク)が、町中にブロックが冷酷な殺人鬼だと吹き込んでいたこともあり、町人は、ブロックに冷たい視線を向けるばかりだった。さらに、デアシーは、ブロックとトレイシーが始めようとしている牧畜の新しいビジネスを邪魔し…。

数は少ないものの、『赤い崖』や"Crime of Passion"などの印象的な作品を手がけた後、数々のTV作品エピソードの監督として腕を振るったゲルト・オズワルド監督による西部劇のささやかな佳作。75分という短さが幸いし、緊迫感が途切れない作品になっている。低予算ということもあり、5日という驚くべき期間で撮り上げられたと言われている(1週間という説もあり)。日本劇場未公開。

大人から理解されずに苛立つ若者像を鮮烈に表現したのはジェームス・ディーンが最初だと言われているが、しかし、その道標を作ったのは、ジョン・デレクという気がする。心ならずも非行に走ってしまう若者を主人公にして、常に彼らに同情を寄せる作品を作ったニコラス・レイ監督が、デレクを『暗黒への転落』や『追われる男』(北米盤Blu-ray" Run for Cover ")で使ったのは、彼の中に、等身大でむき出しの若者像を見出したからだろう。もし、もう少し年齢が若ければ、レイ監督は、『理由なき反抗』でも、ディーンではなく、迷うことなくデレクを使ったかもしれない(デレクはディーンより5歳上)。本作もまた、そんなデレクの苛立つ若者像(と言っても、すでに31歳になっていた)が印象的な青春西部劇とも言うべき作品だ。

孤立無援のブロックの苛立ちと怒りが、そのまま、今にも破裂しそうな作品の緊張感になっている。オズワルド監督は、ブロックを丹念に追う演出で(キャメラワークも長廻しの移動が多い)、最後の銃撃戦に至るまでの緊張を少しずつ高めて行く(途中、ブロックの銃の腕前をみせるあたりも巧みだ)。縦を生かした構図も実に良く練られているし、アクションの切れ味も良い。整った顔立ちながら、屈折した暗さを漂わせたデレクが良いのは言うまでもないが、彼の弟に扮するアダムスの兄思いのやさしさに満ちたさりげない演技も心に沁みる。

本DVDは、2001年に、米MGM/UAから発売されていた『無宿者』に加え、初DVD化の"Fury at Showdown"を1枚のディスク(片面2層)に収録している。『無宿者』は、2001年盤と同一のマスターを使っているようだ。徹底的なレストアはされていないので、大きな斜めキズが入るような箇所もあるものの、白黒諧調、ディテール表現とも許容出来る画質。音声も、ノイズはあるが、全体としては問題ない。"Fury at Showdown"は、キズも少なく、白黒諧調、ディテール表現とも良好の画質。音声も良好。片面2層とはいえ、2作品を収めているので、画質、音質に不安があったのだが、計165分という長さと、適正なエンコードとオーサリングが行われたことで、全く問題なし。

特典は一切なく(チャプター、字幕もない)、本編のみの収録だが、長く廃盤だった『無宿者』(日本のジュネス企画のものは正規盤ではない)と初DVD化の"Fury at Showdown"が廉価で観られるようになった意義は大きい。そして、もう一点特筆すべきことは、今回、米TGGのライセンス盤になったことで、リージョンがAllに変更になった点(ただし、パッケージ裏には、「R-1」と明記)。リージョン・フリー機を持っていなくても、日本のリージョン2　DVDプレーヤーで問題なく観られることは、日本の西部劇ファンにとって魅力的な利点だろう。総合的評価で星5つ！
