Fresh are the horrific memories of the death of his wife, killed at the hands of the Union soldiers, an act that sets Bohannon on a course of revenge. This contemporary Western tells the story of his journey, a story that rides on Union Pacific's construction of the first transcontinental railroad. Bohannon's westward travels take him to a lawless melting pot of a town called "Hell on Wheels," which moves with the construction of the railroad. David Hinckley New York Daily News Hell on Wheels plays with big ideas about redemption, sin and forgiveness, so Cullen's detour and the religious component of other subplots fit the show's tone and direction. Rated: 4/5 Aug 1, 2014 Full Review Kendall Williams Den of Geek The oftentimes slow pace of the show works to allow viewers to feel the sunburn of the men laying the rail, the anticipation of danger just of the view and the subtle and blatant scheming that is Durant. Rated: 3.5/5 Oct 3, 2018 Full Review Ryan Sandoval TV.com "Return to Hell" was an awesome episode. How could it not be? Hell on Wheels is at its best when it goes for big moves. Oct 6, 2014 Full Review Ross Bonaime Paste Magazine The things that made Deadwood so successful-the living, breathing community, and the duality of characters-is what Hell on Wheels is seriously lacking. Rated: 5.9/10 Aug 11, 2014 Full Review Sean McKenna TV Fanatic While there's a lot to like, and remind me why I enjoyed the show in the first place, I'm still a bit wary. Its going to be as difficult a task as crossing a frozen river for the show. Rated: 4.3/5 Aug 4, 2014 Full Review Read all reviews

Audience Member I found the story was shifted into high gear this time around and gave some incredible characters and moments along with a lot of tragedy Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member Hell On Wheels is in general one of the best dramas describing how the Euro Americans laid the foundation to the destruction of a continent, and the building of the transcontinental railroad was an absolute peak in this development. Even though the characters are either invented or a more or less heavily romanticizing of historical persons, all to fit a brilliant plot, the depiction of the invironment following the railroad track is basically genuin. The melodrama is based on real human relations within a frame of true historical events, and despite a free creative dramaturgy, the plot never loses proximity to the authentic events. On top of this the creators manage to make a highly engaging story, and the cast, acting, direction, costumes, set designing and cinematography is all sublime. After losing some of the credible integrety in season 3, the writers are back in full strength with season 4, just as intense as in season 1, and with screen drama at its general finest. Standing out is episode 11 - Bleeding Kansas - which might just be some of the best TV drama ever made. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member Hell on Wheels was solid though the first 3 seasons. In season 4 it - pardon the pun- goes off the rails. Or jumps the shark. The storylines become illogical and inconsistent. I literally gave up on the show after episode 8 which had all of the quality of an episode of Night Rider or The A-Team. Children's cartoons are better written than this season of television. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member This season was brutal. The most tragic season of television I have ever seen. It sets things in motion for the last season in a perfect way. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member Season 4 was a locomotive of building tension, which led to unexpected twists and turns that I'm sure will have consequences in the final season. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member As you can see by my ratings I thought seasons 1 & 2 were good... season 3 was starting to lose what made the show good, but the great characters were able to save it, obviously some episodes are better then others, but overall Season 3 was still a good watch. In season 4 the show continues to slip. So many changes plus at times it feels as if the show looks to make the man character suffer. Some episodes are still good, but overall the show feels lost.
