Doctor STrange/Benedict Wong - Marvel Studios

Director Zach Cregger is currently gearing up for his follow-up to 2022’s surprise horror hit Barbarian. Titled Weapons, we first learned about the project last year. It’s set up at New Line Cinema and, for the time being, much remains mysterious. We do, however, have word that the cast has been fleshed out and Cregger has assembled one heck of an ensemble for this one.

According to Deadline, several actors have joined the cast including Benedict Wong (3 Body Problem, Doctor Strange), Amy Madigan (The Hunt, Antlers), Austin Abrams (Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, Euphoria) and Cary Christopher (Days of Our Lives). They join a cast that is being led by Josh Brolin (No Country for Old Men, Deadpool 2), who stepped in for Pedro Pascal (The Last of Us) earlier this year. Pascal had previously been pegged as the lead.

The outlet also confirms the casting of Alden Ehrenreich (Oppenheimer, Cocaine Bear) and Julia Garner (Ozark, Inventing Anna), who is also starring in Blumhouse’s Wolf Man. Cregger wrote the script for his latest effort, which he is also set to produce alongside Roy Lee, J.D. Lifshitz, Raphael Margules and Miri Yoon. Filming is expected to begin in the not-too-distant future. That being the case, we will hopefully learn a little more as cameras begin rolling.

There are no details on who anyone is playing. That’s mostly because plot details for the film are being kept entirely under wraps at this time. Cregger and New Line are playing this one pretty close to the chest. Secrecy served Barbarian well, so why not use that same strategy again? M. Night Shyamalan has essentially built a whole career on it. It would not be remotely surprising if New Line is going to try and emulate that same model of success once again.

Barbarian was a sleeper hit in 2022. The film, made for just $4.5 million, ended up pulling in $45 million at the box office against major praise from critics. That success, in turn, led to Cregger signing a deal to produce more genre films for Warner Bros. and New Line. Weapons is just part of that equation. He also has several other projects in the works, including a mysterious sci-fi film called Companion that he will produce. Jack Quaid (The Boys) is due to star in that one.

Weapons does not currently have a release date but stay tuned.
