Lonnie lays down some fiery blues here. This is live blues that will leave your ears blistered from the great lead guitar work from LB. This kind of blues is best to hear live. This is clearly Lonnies greatest record of the ones I have heard from him.

If you like Lonnie Brooks this CD is for you. If you never heard of Lonnie Brooks this CD is the best bet to get familiarized with him. Good live recording on which Lonnie assembled cappable musician playing his best known tracks. No disappointment here.

I make it a habit for NOT writing reviews on music & movies as both are actually PERSONAL opinions & taste. Some feel it is OK to attack my personal taste; so, I'll just say that I was recently introduced to Lonnie & I'm thoroughly enjoying his style of the Blues!!!

~ Lonnie Brooks has merged Louisiana and Chicago blues into his own style, and that along with his dynamic live performances has made him one of the Chicago's top bluesmen. A masterful showman, the good-natured Brooks puts on a show as this CD demonstrates.
~ Born in Louisiana, Brooks started playing guitar seriously in his early twenties and living in Port Arthur, TX. Influenced by B.B. King and Long John Hunter, he joined the band of zydeco king Clifton Chenier before starting his own recording career in 1957 with "Family Rules". The young rock & roller, then billed as Guitar Junior, enjoyed more regional success with"The Crawl" (later covered by the Fabulous Thunderbirds). He then joined Sam Cooke's band and changed his name to Lonnie Brooks. Session work (including Jimmy Reed's classic "Big Boss Man") and a series of R&B-oriented singles appeared in the 1960's. By the late '70s, Brooks was gaining a deserved reputation as an exceptionally dynamic Chicago bluesman with a fresh perspective. He cut several outstanding albums for Alligator records beginning in 1979 and continuing into the late 1990's.
~ "Live from Chicago" was cut live in 1988 at Chicago's B.L.U.E.S. Etcetera nightclub. Lonnie delivers a high-energy, exciting 10 song, 52 minute live show with some fine support from his sextet, particularly the organist. Lonnie's voice is in fine form, as is his guitar playing. Many of the titles are familiar from his Alligator catalog, so if you have the studio version you will find the live versions interesting by comparison. In addition, there are several tunes that are not present elsewhere in his Alligator catalog. Guitar fans will be impressed with Freddie King's "Hide Away", in which Brooks puts on a seven minute showcase of the guitar licks he has mastered throughout his long, illustrious career.
