The '90s were truly a golden age for animated films. Disney ruled the box office with an iron fist, leading to a veritable avalanche of 90s animated movies created in hopes of usurping the throne. The rise of VHS allowed '90s kids everywhere to enjoy their favorite animated films over and over again, sometimes much to the displeasure of their parents.
Still, as fans grew older, they held onto most of our memories of these films, but there were a few that they managed to forget along the way. However, despite relative obscurity, there is nothing to say that these films aren't of the same caliber as the more famous fare they share VHS stacks with.
Updated on May 2nd, 2024 by Fawzia Khan: 90s cartoon movies remain some of the most comforting and nostalgic movie night picks. They were funny, evocative, and full of heart, but some underrated gems have been forgotten on the way. This list has been updated with even more old animated movies from the 90s for viewers who want to relive their childhoods again.

Based on the FernGully tales by Diana Young, FernGully: The Last Rainforest is a hidden, independent film that 90s kids would have definitely watched for its message, but forgotten about soon after. The titular FernGully is a gorgeous rainforest in Australia, populated by flora, fauna, and fairies like young Crysta, who accidentally turns young logger Zak to her size.
The movie (not based on a fairytale) revolves around the fairies' attempts to save their beloved rainforest from the wrath of Hexxus, a pollution entity, and human interference. With heavyweights like Tim Curry and Robin Williams giving voice to the adorable characters, this movie had an environmentally conscious message for kids and adults alike. The beautiful animation of FernGully: The Last Rainforest has been forgotten but needs a rewatch.

Pixar had already broken ground with Toy Story, post which came A Bug's Life, a funny and unique story of an ant uprising against their grasshopper oppressors. Flik, an inventor and an ant, mistakenly destroys the ants' tribute to the grasshoppers, and when the hoppers demand a new, unreasonable amount, he vows to fight back.
Flik gets with him a swarm of circus insects, thinking that they are warriors, to help with the uprising. A Bug's Life has hilarious characters and a sweet message for children to stand up to bullies and believe in friendships. Since the movie was preceded by Toy Story 2, it was kind of wiped from kids' memories.
